This week saw the start of the new activity cycle and it has been encouraging to see so many activities being offered and so many students enjoying their busy lunchtimes. Thank you to all our staff for offering such a variety of activities. It is this educational enhancement on offer here at EIS East is what sets us apart from other schools in Moscow.

On the theme of co-curricular activities, we also had further training at the East campus for the senior students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award. Their adventurous journey practice takes place next month and they are busy getting ready learning to put up tents and how to look after themselves when camping.

Year 4 and 5 were out on Tuesday enjoying a visit to the Kremlin Armoury. This was a very informative visit although they had to spend some time avoiding the rain showers that welcomed their arrival in Red Square.

I was very pleased this week to be informed that five of our KS1 students have had their work chosen by the ‘Young writers – The Story Shop’ competition. Their stories will be included in a publication being published later this year - Young Writers Anthology. Well done to these students.

Next week we celebrate World Book Week. Our topic this year is Myths and Legends. This session was about equipment and food. Teacher showed us all of the equipment and examples of food that we could bring and we separated into groups and decided what food we are going to take. The hardest thing is that we have to take food that takes up small amount of space but is very nutritious as well as we will have to cook one of the meals ourselves (since it is one of the rules to receive the award). Therefore we had to decide who will bring which specific type of food for the dinner (the meal we will have to cook). We also split into groups and set up tents by ourselves outside. It took us approximately seven minutes to set up and after that we had to put them back in their original bags. This was only our first attempt, so it will take us less time in the actual journey. Duke of Edinburgh International Award

East and South-West students, who are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award, joined together this week to

learn about the equipment they will need for the forthcoming expedition. One essential skill they learned was how to put up

and take down their tents.

Children of different ages and skill abilities joined the Science Investigations club during which, working with a partner, looked for things in the classroom that needed either a push or pull to make them move. They recorded and discussed their findings. They agreed the heaviest object they found was the sofa they pulled and pushed together.

Children also had to find two toy cars of different sizes and investigate which toy car goes the farthest. They pushed the cars with equal force and measured how far they went with the meter rulers. They repeated the experiment several times and agreed the small cars go farther and faster than big cars

First real theory paper for the year 10 students in IGCSE ICT. Most seemed to cope extremely well, their behaviour was outstanding throughout. I really hope the grades indicate the hard work most are putting into the subject.

Year 4 & 5

Visit the Armoury On Tuesday, Year 4 and 5 went to the Kremlin Armoury. In the Armoury we saw dresses. They were so beautiful. I wish I could wear them! After, we saw carriages made of wood. The carriages were gold plated. One looked like a tank. Later, we went to see the pistols, swords and guns. On them were diamonds. Finally, we went to school. I felt very good because there were many diamonds. I want to go there again. I think that all the school should go to the armoury! By Oskars

On Tuesday we had a unique event. It was our trip the Armoury and it was even more joyful because it was the first time we had a trip with the Year 4’s. We travelled by metro and had lunch in the underground market. We walked to the Kremlin in the rain. It was fun walking in the rain as it made us fresh and chilly. We walked through Alexandrovsky Sad and then…taa daa…we could see the Kremlin. We had to wait in line to enter and the security guard examined our bags and permitted us to enter. We went into the Armoury Chamber and it was superb because we saw precious things fashioned and designed from gems, stones, gold, silver and diamonds. Obviously it was not for people to buy. There were plates, basins, carriages, shields, swords, weapons, crowns. We had a tour guide telling us the history. She told us that each crown had 2,500 diamonds. One carriage used 23 horses to move and another had 10 servants to lift it when it needed to turn a corner. My favourite bit was the clothes of the Tsars. The empresses had lengthwise dresses and little shoes, the waist was so thin. The men had long clothes with long sleeves and trousers, but tiny shoes. Some clothes weighed more than 5kg and one piece of clothing was made with diamonds and gold. When we left our teachers, Miss Williams, Mrs Phillips and Miss Olga were so kind they gave us extra playtime. Then we returned on the metro back to school. We were so tired by the trip, but it was a most supreme trip. Maarij Year 5

Year 1 and 2

STORY COMPETITION WINNERS

Back in November, Year 1 and 2 were sent an invitation for a special writing competition and were asked to write a story about an extraordinary adventure. Everybody worked very hard to write their stories and create illustrations to go alongside. It was so fantastic to read children's stories that included the titles of "The Magical Castle", "An Amazing Adventure" and "The Pirate Boat". A huge well done to everyone in the class for taking part and writing such imaginative stories. Much to our delight, we had three winners from the class and their stories will be published in a book that will soon be sat in our school library! Well done to Ahmad, Asmaa and Aliabbas!

Year 1 and 2 have been working well in English looking at traditional tales. They have been retelling tales and focusing on sentence structure. In Maths, Year 1 and 2 have revised how to tell the time and the months of the year. It can be tricky to remember all the months! In Topic, they have been using the computers to research countries and their flags. Year 1 and 2 have also been comparing the similarities and differences with animals habitats. They class are especially excited for Book Week next week and can't wait to see everybody's costumes!

Nursery and Reception children learned the sound 'oo' this week having fun sharing some facts about the moon and listening to stories about Bob, the man who lives on the moon. They made cuckoo clocks, practised telling the time and enjoyed getting messy playing with the moon gel.

Year 3

Year 4

This week Year 3 have had a super busy week learning all about Water: the cycle, the different states it can be in, and what happens if we pollute the water. We had an amazing lesson outside where Mr Wolf helped us learn how to measure, use scales and figure out lots of calculations in our head. In English we have continued with writing non-chronological reports and in Topic we found our wardrobe audit really interesting and learnt so much about what resources are needed to just make one t-shirt! In Maths we have been AMAZING at reading, calculating and understanding time using both analogue and digital clocks. In music, we sang and did the actions to a really funny song about bananas. Our new clubs and activities started this week, and they are all a lot of fun.

Year 4 had a wonderful trip to the Armoury on Tuesday. We are all looking forward to Book Week next week (children can dress as a book character on Friday, for 100 rubles.) *In Maths, we have looked at different strategies to add and divide large numbers. We are becoming more fluent in the 4 operations, and are making rapid progress. We looked at elapsed time and learnt how to find the difference between two times. *In English, we have been continuing with our novel study. We have been learning to add more detail to our writing, and to edit our work carefully. *In Topic, we have been looking at how movies and sports have changed over time. * In Science, we have learnt about aquifers and how water is transported from lakes, rivers and aquifers to our taps at home.

Year 5

Year 6

This week in mathematics, students have been investigating shapes. They explored the features and properties of 2d & 3d shapes, discovered how nets are used to create 3d shapes from the formation of connected 2d shapes and challenged themselves with creating a net cube of matching number digits.

In English, the class continued with their unit on arguments and debates. They were introduced to different types of fronted adverbials and how different types have different effects on the sentence. In groups, students worked together to create a written argument on a chosen topic which the students voted for. They experimented with different sentence structures and tried to persuade the opposing team that their argument was correct.

Year 6 have begun work on an exciting new enterprise project. The children have teamed up with Year 5 to start their own businesses. In the last week they have thought of ideas of things they can sell to other students in the school. They have also conducted market research to help them decide on their final product or service.

Each team will be given a loan of 1000 Rubles to fund their enterprise. The children will be able to keep any profits left after our marketplace event in a few weeks. Good luck to our young businessmen and businesswomen of the future!

In English, the children have been preparing their own explanation texts, taking care to include features such as causal and time conjunctions, an effective introduction, technical vocabulary , diagrams and a summary. In Maths, they revised things such as calculating fractions, long division, long multiplication, the parts of a circle and multi-step word problems.
