TODAY’S AGENDA
With ancestors who crossed the Bering Strait, by 1492 there were 1 million to 2 million Native Americans in more than 240 cultures.
NATIVE AMERICANS
Settlements were established in St. Augustine, Fla. (Spaniards) in 1565 and on Roanoke Island, N.C. (English) in 1587.
EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT
WHAT IS AN AMERICAN?
Nobody knows the fate of the Roanoke Island colonists.They vanished within three years.
The Virginia colony was established in 1607 and thrived on the tobacco trade, first using indentured servants and then slaves.
JAMESTOWN, VA.
The first 19 slaves, captured by Dutch traders froma Spanish ship, arrived in Jamestown in 1619.

• Puritans escaped religious harassment, first inEngland and subsequently in the Netherlands.
