When boys start turning into men, they seem to become impossible. It is as if a river has suddenly burst its banks. Dukuza’s parents could not understand the change that had come over their son, he was like another person to them. He spent his money thoughtlessly, he neglected his schoolwork and was hardly to be seen at home except 5 at bedtime. Dukuza himself was surprised at the change. He looked through his school books as one looks at old photographs of forgotten times. Had he been asked to recount what he had learned he could not have given an answer because, as he now realised, he had never listened in the first place. 10 He always sat at the back of the classroom to avoid being asked questions. But how long could he hide himself? He would have to be exposed sooner or later. But what dreams moved through his mind while the teachers talked! He thought of fame and saw a wonderful being, like a glorious, fiery spirit, casting a magnificent spell over thousands, millions of people. 15 [Chapter 3]

But a new year was looming ahead and she had not yet decided on her future. The thought of returning to the city frightened her. Often she would take a drive up to the lakes in the forest region where she would while away the morning, either sketching or reading a book. Then she would go to one of the inns in the kloof, sip tea and rest her gaze on the slopes, which dropped gradually towards 5 the lowveld like a mysterious sea. And her thoughts would wonder, she would think of Renaud and look down through the haze to the school where he was teaching. It seemed odd to her that a young man should tuck himself away in such a remote part of the world. Why had he sacrificed so much? How did he bear such loneliness? And yet he seemed so self-contained, so content. Thoughts of him 10 always filled her with warmth and tenderness.‘But what shall I do with my life?’ she asked herself repeatedly. ‘This part of the world is very beautiful but I can’t merely live out my days here. I’m sacrificing too much. Yet, Renaud does it and he seems fulfilled. But he knows something I don’t, I’m so shallow! Oh, to see what he sees!’

KARDASHIAN CRAZE: WHY IS THE WORLD OBSESSED WITH A FAMILY FAMOUS FOR NO REASON?

It is television’s night of nights – The Emmys. Walking the red carpet at the Nokia Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles is everyone, from the talented cast of ‘Game of Thrones’ to Tina Fey to Anna Paquin. Suddenly, the screams from the photographers grow louder, the excited crowd milling on the outskirts perks up and reporters everywhere are scrambling for an interview. Is it Brad Pitt, Will Smith or Jen Aniston? No, it is reality stars Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner. Everywhere you turn these days, the Kardashians are making headlines. While the family earned some minor fame in the 1990s after the late Robert Kardashian represented O.J. Simpson during his wife’s murder trial, these days, the Kardashians are undoubtedly the “hottest” family in Hollywood. The 5th season of their E! reality show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” averaged nearly 4.7 million total viewers. However, the reality show is only a small part of the ever-expanding Kardashian empire. Sisters, Khloe and Kourtney scored their own Miami-based spin-off series, the three older sisters are getting ready to release their own autobiography ‘Kardashian Konfidential,’ they earn very well, endorsing a multitude of products from the weight loss pill QuickTrim to Famous Cupcakes. They recently released a sunless tanner called Kardashian Glamour, have their very own Bebe clothing collection and just announced that their own line, K-Dash, will be sold worldwide, this month. This is all in addition to being flown around the world to appear at parties and events. Furthermore, the sisters swooped in for a top ten spot on People’s 25 Most Intriguing People of 2009. But one question remains -- why are the Kardashians famous? “We've entered an era where ‘fame’ has far less to do with genuine talent and love for one's craft and far more to do with tabloid scandal and reality television antics,” Alec Shankman, a former reality show talent agent and founder of online casting service “GotCast” told Pop Tarts. “The Kardashians arguably 'launched' much in part due to Kim's one-time best-friend-forever status with Paris Hilton, and then her subsequent raunchy tape. Soon thereafter, the family is outselling box office movie stars on the newstands. Entry into the once glamorous celebrity in-crowd is now often as easy as creating a viral moment of tabloid gossip.”

So, in glorifying this family – famous for nothing in particular – is society setting a bad example to children - that they don’t need to necessarily aspire to having brains or a particular skill in order to really do well in life? “A recent survey of school children revealed that many teens today would rather be famous than smart, they’d rather be a celebrity assistant than go to Harvard. Although fascination with celebrities and fame is nothing new, never before has it seemed so attainable for so many,” Melissa Henson, Director of Communications and Public Education at the Parents Television Council said. “Most modern celebrities, from the cast of ‘Jersey Shore’ to the Kardashians, achieved their fame or notoriety not through any real merit or talent, but by having “spicy” tapes made public, or by acting like entitled, spoiled brats on some reality TV show. Is this really the example we want our children to follow?

When the world first met Kimberly Noel Kardashian, from the USA, over a decade ago, her wardrobe was filled with bold jewel tones and busy prints. Then came along Kanye West, armed with an assistant, to overhaul Kardashian's wardrobe, leaving behind those trendy, colourful items in favour of fashion-forward pieces in strictly neutral hues. ("Kanye wanted to give me a makeover, " Kardashian said on Watch What Happens: Live) And thus, the beige Kardashian that we've come to know was born. Take this past week, for example. While out on the promo circuit for her new KKW Fragranses, Kardashian did the talk-show rounds. She appeared on The Real, The Late Late Show With James Corden, and Ellen, wearing a skin-tight white anckle-length dress, a skin-tight grey mini-dress, and skin-tight grey midi-dress, respectively. At night, there was her fragrance launch dinner, where she wore a ruched, white long-sleeved gown, not unlike the ruched, white long-sleeved gown she wore to the Met Gala, and a dinner for Bumble Bizz, where she wore an oversized tuxedo blazer.

THE ‘NEW’ FACEBOOK?

It is no secret that Facebook is losing fans. Thanks to fake news, irritating algorithms, targeted ads and those annoying old high school classmates you should probably get around to unfriending, it is likely you are using the social network less and less. As is the nature of things, someone is stepping in to fill the gap. Vero raced to the top of app stores’ charts worldwide recently, and is raking in rave reviews. It claims to put the “social” back into social media. The premise is simple – a newsfeed of posts from all the people you follow or have connected with, displayed chronologically. According to its manifesto Vero aims to correct the “imbalance that began to form between the interests of the platforms and users. A false sense of connection left us lonelier than ever. So we decided to create something more authentic. We created a social network that lets you be yourself. Hence the name Vero, meaning truth.” Vero, which has been around since 2015, has seen a surge in sign-ups this year. Last month it had about 500 000 users; now the number is more than three million. The platform’s no-ads policy is pretty attractive, as is its promise never to share users’ info, habits, likes and dislikes with third parties the way Facebook and other social media do to target advertising. You can target posts to categorised groups of people – for example, only those classified as “close friends” will see pictures of your family holiday. It is also easy to use and find your way around, if you are used to social media. The creator of Vero is billionaire Ayman Hariri (39), son of former Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri. He told CNN he came up with the idea after noticing Facebook friends “acting quite differently to how I knew them to be in the real world”. “In the real world we don’t have an audience,” he said. “We treat different people in our lives differently based on degrees of intimacy. The greatest social network that exists is the one between people in the real world.”

Clampdown on producers of fake and expired foods Government acts against shop owners who sell poor quality products

The Northern Cape Police were recently given a go-ahead to raid a counterfeit food factory. National police spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, says, “Police discovered the fake goods as well as equipment used to manufacture sanitary towels, shoe polish, food and condiments.” This action shocked consumers who questioned if they have unknowingly been eating fake food. Since then, there have been many more people

sharing videos on social media of foods that they have bought that appear to be fake. Health Department spokesperson, Popo Maja, says the department is conducting a nationwide raid on spaza shops to get rid of fake foods. Following a number of videos on social media showing products that appeared to be odd but packaged in the branding of authentic brands, the Health Department is investigating the matter. The videos show soft drinks with things floating inside the bottles, and two of the same branded soft drinks but in two different shades of colour. Some of these shops also sell products that are past their sell-by dates. Popo says the cost of food has significantly increased and most people want to buy cheaper products. This is why the products are sold cheaper to lure consumers. Popo says they have launched raids on shops across the country to check if the products at these shops meet the required standards. He says they do not know where the products are coming from as they were following up on social media leads. “Our officials are going to outlets to buy goods like any other person and check the quality of the products. They then contact the legitimate producers to verify the products.” President of South African Spaza and Tuckshop Association, Rose Nkosi, says the organisation is concerned about the situation. “It is unlawful to produce counterfeit foods. These people must be arrested,” she says. The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) spokesperson, Bjorn Buyst, reportedly said the matter of fake foods being sold at spaza shops is beyond their control. “We do not have the authority to make those calls on which products must be sold there. We only test products that come to us,” he said. Bjorn also said producers of products were no longer obliged by law to test their goods at SABS anymore and that is why there are many illegal products on the market. The National Consumer Commission’s Commissioner, Ebrahim Mohamed, says that the commission is investigating the fake food claims. “We appeal to communities to not take the law into their own hands. We are working on ways to deal with the perpetrators,” he says.

FOR THE LOVE OF READING Zimkhita Mlanzeli, newest member of the FunDza Literacy Trust*

shares her story.

1 I went to Jingqi Village, not knowing what to expect. I went to give a two-day reading and writing course to an unknown audience. I went armed with information, ready to teach but I came out a student.

2 The chief of Jingqi had heard that people who wanted to promote literacy were coming to his village. Being a wise man, the chief 5

believed that education meant empowerment and that meant a better way of living for the community. That was why he asked his

right-hand man to mobilise the community and get a team of volunteers who would be trained to run reading clubs in different villages in the area. 10

3 I stayed an hour's drive away from Jingqi and had to travel on the

harsh, dirt roads of the Eastern Cape to get there. There is only one high school in Jingqi and seven primary schools which are

extremely far from each other in the surrounding villages. The schools have no facilities and no computers. Internet access is a 15 luxury that only a few have via their cell phones. The library of the high school is in bad shape.

4 On the first day, I spoke to the children and found that they were

hungry for information. They said they did not read because their books were from the dinosaur age and they found nothing 20

relevant in them. They have no access to the library as the teacher who is responsible for it, keeps it locked.

Page 19: ENGLISH HL GRADE 9 ACTIVITIES Activity 1 – Novel Beautiful ... · 1 . ENGLISH HL . GRADE 9 ACTIVITIES . Activity 1 – Novel Beautiful Hope . Read the following extracts and answer

19

5 Imagine their joy when I arrived with a box full of relevant, funky

novels written for teenagers! Not only are the books written in simple English, but they address issues that challenge many teenagers. 25

It is easy to relate to the teenage characters in the books. 6 The group of fifteen volunteers are amazing people. Six of the women had walked long distances to get to Jingqi because of their belief. All they had 25 were the word of the village chief and the hope that he had called them for a fruitful purpose. So, 30 against the harsh words of their families, the ridicule of their

neighbours and the 28 ºC blazing country sun, they had come in search of a better future.

7 I have never seen such passion and love for reading as I saw on the faces of the people of that area. If the love for reading can 35

transform a community so much, imagine how it could change our country.

8 Since my trip, I have tried to capture my experience in Jingqi, but I

cannot get beyond the first line. I am a writer by profession, but I cannot find the right words to express my feelings. I left Jingqi a 40

new person, with a refreshed passion for growing communities of readers. I will reach greater heights because of the people I worked with and our wonderful sponsors who support the improvement of literacy in South Africa.

The basics of a good skin regime

1 With the impact of 21st century living, our increased understanding of the skin, plus ever-more sophisticated skincare solutions… does the cleanse- tone-moisturise routine cut it anymore?

2 Most probably not, is the simple answer. We have access to all sorts of knowledge and interventions that can help to keep our skin as healthy 5 and youthful looking as long as possible.

3 The first step is not to take our skin for granted. How many of us do? Probably most of us. Unless it starts hurting (as acne and eczema sufferers will tell you), or it’s only as we age and start seeing the conseqences of our neglect or abuse that we wish we’d taken better 10 care.

4 Our skin, besides being our largest organ (a fact that in itself deserves respect) is incredibly hard working. We know that up to 80 percent of what we see as ageing comes from external factors – cheif among them sun damage from UV rays. 15

5 However, the remainder comes from internal factors. Natural or intrinsic ageing is caused by internal factors such as hormonal shifts , genetics and changes in skin metabolism, which contribute to the appearance of wrinkles, loss of firmness, and crepey skin. our skin of course also acts as a barometer of these problems Positive lifestyle choices will go a 20 long way towards helping to keep us well.
