According to the latest Legatum Prosperity Index, Cyprus is the 28th most prosperous
country in the world. Legatum measured the prosperity of 149 countries based on their
economy, quality, business environment, social capital, governance, education, health,
safety and security, personal freedom and natural environment. Cyprus has been
upgraded back to investment grade by DBRS Ratings Limited, following recent
upgrades from Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings. This result reflects on GDP growth
of close to 4.0% in 2018, one among the strongest in the euro area.

Responding to this need, the team of
Tetrahand Cyprus was created in
March 2016. The team comprises of

Paraplegic Centre and Christiana
Fakonti, Physiotherapist of the
Paraplegic Department of Nicosia
General Hospital. The aim of this
service is to provide reconstructive
surgery and advanced patient specific
rehabilitation to this demanding
group of patients.
THE MAIN PROCEDURES THAT ARE CARRIED OUT ARE:
1. Surgery to reestablish shoulder and
elbow control
2. Surgery to reestablish a functional
grip
3. Spasticity reduction surgery which can lead to better
hygiene and posture of the patient as well as in some cases
with functional improvement.
So far, the team has assessed over 25 patients and
performed ten successful reconstructions in eight patients.
The patients are operated in Iasis Private Hospital in
Paphos and rehabilitated in the Paraplegic Department of
Nicosia General Hospital. More complex and demanding
patients are referred to the Swiss Paraplegic Centre in
Nottwil, Switzerland.
In parallel, we also have an academic development as
evidenced by our presence in two International
Conferences, the Tetrahand World Congress which was
held in Switzerland in August 2018 and the FESSH Annual
Congress which was held in Copenhagen in June 2018.
Further to the above, we also provide mini observerships
for international surgeons. We were more than happy to
welcome Mr James Bedford, of Manchester University NHS
Foundation Trust and Mr Michael David, of University
Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire who attended our
work from 21/10/2018 to 26/10/2018 here in Cyprus.
We aim to continue and expand our service in order to
provide a comprehensive neurohand service for the people
of Cyprus and also patients from neighboring countries as
well.
There is a need in Cyprus for patients suffering from tetraplegia following spinal cord injury and also brain injury or stroke for assessments as to how their upper limb function can improve, either through targeted physiotherapy or through reconstructive surgery.

Neapolis University in Cyprus proudly announces the
official commencement of its collaboration agreement
with Middlesex University. The agreement was signed
between Mr. Michael Leptos, President of Neapolis
University Governing Council, and Ms. Anna Kyprianou,
Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of Middlesex
University.
The collaboration will enable the award of two degrees
for validated programmes delivered by Neapolis
University Pafos. This means that on the successful
completion of such a programme, fully undertaken in
Cyprus, students will receive two degrees, one from
Neapolis University and one from Middlesex University.
The validated programmes include:
• BSc Accounting, Banking and Finance
• BSc Business Administration
• BSc Applied Informatics
The enrolment option to Middlesex University awarded
programmes will be available to both current and
prospective Neapolis University students subject to the
existing entry requirements.

is 3rd with 15.8% and lastly Famagusta with
8.8% and Nicosia with just 5.3%.
Over the course of 2018, a total of 4367
property sale contracts were signed by
overseas buyers, with 1428 deposited by EU
nationals and 2939 by non-EU nationals. At the
same time, during the same period the total
number of contracts to overseas buyers has
risen 81% compared to the ones signed during
the corresponding period of 2017.
The perfect climate along with the new
cosmopolitan culture in the region has
increased the turnout of foreign buyers and
investors. Paphos has been identified in 2017
as well as in 2018 as the best city to buy a
holiday home abroad.

CYPRUS UPGRADED TO INVESTMENT GRADE BY DBRSCyprus has been upgraded back to investment grade by DBRS Ratings Limited, following recent upgrades from Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings, the Cyprus News Agency reported on Saturday.
In a Friday report, DBRS upgraded Cyprus' long-term foreign and local currency-issuer ratings from BB to BBB (low) and its short-term foreign and local currency-issuer ratings from R-4 to R-2 (middle). DBRS also changed the trend from Positive to Stable.
CYPRUS PASSPORT RANKED th16 WORLDWIDE FOR TRAVEL ACCESS
Cyprus' passport was ranked 16th worldwide in terms of global access, according to the Henley Passport index.
Holders can travel without visa to 173 countries in the world and require visas for 53.
Greece is ranked seventh, as is Belgium, Canada and Ireland. Greek passport holders can travel without visa to 184 countries but need a visa for 42.
Japan tops the list, with the country's passport holders having visa-free access to 190 countries and requiring visas for 36. Ranked second are Singapore and North Korea, while Germany and France share third place, and Denmark, Finland, Italy and Sweden share fourth.
Luxembourg and Spain are in fisth place, Austria, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland, the UK and the US are ranked sixth. Making up the top ten are the Czech republic (eighth), Malta (ninth) and Australia, Iceland and New Zeland (joint 10th).
Based on IATA data, the Henley Passport Index offers an in-depth picture of which countries passport-holders can access with which type of visa, how the passport has changed over the last 14 years, how it compares to other passports, why it has the level of access it does, and which additional passports would improve mobility.
According to the agency, the upgrade is driven by the material reduction in Cypriot banks' non-performing loans (NPLs) in r e c e n t m o n t h s , r e fl e c t i n g t h e government's and the banks' stepped up efforts. Together, the orderly liquidation of Cyprus Cooperative Bank and the banks' sale of NPLs have almost halved the stock of the banking sector's NPLs in 2018. While NPLs remain high, the agency adds, the decline in NPLs and a strengthened legal framework are reducing risks to financial stability.
Cyprus has been ranked the third most family friendly
destination in Europe for a beach holiday, according to
the Family Beach Index compiled by British travel firm
On The Beach. It scored highly when it came to warm
sea temperatures, water and amusement parks, and
the low average cost of a family holiday.
Crete tops the list, while Costa Blanca in Spain came
in second. Making up the top five are Spain's Costa
Brava and Costa Dorada.
The index is based on the average air temperature,
average sea temperature, the number of family
friendly attractions, flight duration from the UK and
the average cost for a family of four. It covers 50
resorts in Europe.
Crete was found to have the highest number of family
friendly attractions (10) of all of the destinations in
the study and enjoys an average daily temperature of
24 degrees during the summer months.
Costa Blanca scored highly due to its short flight
duration from the UK, warm sea and air temperatures,
and large number of water and theme parks (seven).
The rest of the top ten is made up of Majorca (sixth),
Malta (seventh), Corfu (eighth), Sardinia (ninth) and
the Costa De La Luz in Spain (10th).
