Class 6: Indefinite articles, days of the week, routines
Aula 6: Artigos indefinidos, dias da semana, rotinas
_______________________________________________________
1. Indefinite articles
Artigos indefinidos: um / uma
With nouns: Com substantivos:
a = one, used before countable nouns starting with consonant sounds
an = one, used before countable nouns starting with vowel sounds
a car a flower an apple
an egg a house an hour a woman a uniform an umbrella
With noun phrases (adjective + noun): Com locuções adjetivas:
a big house an old house
a young lady an interesting story a beautiful day a heavy table
* Note: Lembre-se sempre do critério sonoro, mas não visual utilizado em língua inglesa!
Use “a” antes de som consonantal, use “an” antes de som vocálico. Os artigos indefinidos
em inglês não servem para identificar o gênero (“um” para vocábulos masculinos, “uma”
para vocábulos femininos), mas o número, portanto só podem se referir a substantivos
contáveis que estejam no singular.
36
2. Exercise: Insert the correct article (“a” or “an”) within the

Thursday day of Norse god Thor (god of thunder)
Friday day of Anglo-Saxon goddess Frigga (Venus)
Saturday day of the Latin god: Saturn
Sunday day of the Sun (the Lord’s day)
