Often a seminar is led by a student who prepares

and presents the topic and kicks off thediscussion. So that the seminar is of benefit toeveryone, it is the responsibility of the other

students to contribute their ideas, opinions andquestions. contributions should have been researched and

prepared in advance. The tutor's role is as a facilitator- to try to

encourage contributions from all those presentby asking questions that stimulate furtherdiscussion.

What are the different reporting verbs that can beused?

Reporting verbs differ in terms of their strength; for

example, 'to suggest' is much weaker, and moretentative, than 'to argue'. The two verbs convey verydifferent pictures about how the author you arestudying sees his or her materials and research.

Some reporting verbs are used principally to say whatthe writer does and does not do. These verbs do notindicate any value judgement on the part of thewriter; they are called 'neutral' reporting verbs.

    11/14

Function and strength Example verbsNEUTRAL: verbs used to say what

    the writer describes in factual

terms, demonstrates, refers to,and discusses, and verbs used to

    explain his/her methodology.

describe, show, reveal, study, demonstate, note, point out,

indicate, report, observe, assume, take into consideration, examine,go on to say that, state, believe(unless this is a strong belief),

    mention, etc.

    12/14

Function and strength Example verbsTENTATIVE: verbs used to say what the writer

suggests or speculates on (without being absolutelycertain).

    suggest, speculate, intimate,

hypothesise, moot, imply, propose, recommend, positthe view that, question theview that, postulate, etc.

A second group of verbs is used toshow when the writer has aninclination to believe something butstill wishes to be hesitant; we callthese 'tentative' reporting verbs.

    13/14

Function and strength Example verbsSTRONG: verbs used to say

what the writer makes strongarguments and claims for.

    argue, claim, emphasise, contend,

maintain, assert, theorize, supportthe view that, deny, negate, refute, reject, challenge, strongly believethat, counter the view/argument

    that, etc.

Finally, if the writer has strongarguments to put forward and isabsolutely sure of his or her ground,we can use 'strong' reporting verbs torefer to these ideas.

Then, individually, you must find the information you need tocover your topic.

You are advised to get hold of up-to-date factual figures for the company, andcommentary on it from respected business newspapers and magazines; do notrely too much on the company website or on blogs or obscure websites.

When you come together for the seminar itself, each person presents their aspectof the topic and must be prepared to answer questions on it. When everyone hasdone this, there should be a general discussion of the success and futureprospects of your chosen product. Your seminar should last 15 minutes in total.
