The English Channel is about 350 Miles long. It varies in width from 150 Miles (at it’s widest) to 21 miles (straight of dover, closest part of England and France)

Length and Width

Straight of Dover

Page 5: English Channel

The English Channel is very important today because like many other straits, it’s used as a route for ships to go through to ship different types of goods and other resources that other countires might not have. (Sharing is caring) It’s important for the country that needs whatever is being shipped. Because without it the ships would have to go all the way around and the ship would take longer to deliver.

Importance of the Straight

Page 6: English Channel

If the straight were to ever close, then there would be a lot of trouble with trying to ship different things around the world or to different countries. Because of the strait there is a clear and easy way to get from one place to another with minimum hassle.

What would happen if the straight was closed?

Today, ships that carry goods flow through the strait daily. There is roughly about 500 ships that go through the strait today, making it the busiest strait in the world. Also ferries go through the strait as a mode of transportation for people to get from one place to another. People also swim through the strait, and some drive using the tunnel.

What moves through the strait today

Page 10: English Channel

-The strait faces enviormental problems following ships with toxic cargo and oil spills.-The strait also has many storms that make it dificult for the ships to pass through as well as current changes which are super strong sometimes. -It is 150 Miles Wide and 21 miles At it’s narrowest.

How the strait influenced by its physical geography?

Because there are many ships that pass through there is a possible chance that the ships could spill oil.
