DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM

The Language Department of Brookdale Community College offers an academic ESL program. Our department provides instructors and tutors who are experts in second language acquisition and an inviting and culturally diverse atmosphere.

Our program serves non-native English speakers, 18+ years old, who want to improve their spoken and written English for academic, career-oriented, or personal development purposes. A placement test and oral interview will determine if your level of English qualifies you for the program and, if so, at which level you will begin. If your level of English does not qualify you, you will be informed of other opportunities at Brookdale.

ABOUT OUR COURSES

We offer six levels (three semesters) of academic ESL courses. Core classes focus on the development of grammar, writing, and speaking. Supplementary courses are also available in writing and conversation.

TUTORING

Free tutoring is available to all enrolled ESL students. We have experienced ESL Academic Tutors who provide individual and group tutoring and an array of ESL learning software in our computer lab. Workshops, conversation groups, and club activities are also available.

FINANCIAL AID

Qualified students may be eligible to receive government assistance to pay for classes. Please visit fafsa.ed.gov to see if you qualify.

HOW TO APPLY ON THE MAIN CAMPUS IN LINCROFT

1. Fill out an admission application in the CAR building (Parking Lot 5), and pay $25.00 to apply.

2. Ask for a permission slip to take the ESL Placement Test.

3. Bring the slip and photo identification to the Testing Center and take the test.

4. Make an appointment for an oral interview.

F1 VISA APPLICANTS

Brookdale Community College offers a full –time ESL program. International students who are interested in a student visa must apply through the International Education Center. The same testing and placement procedures apply.
