    4.1 POWeRING THe SL COMPACT

    TheSLCompactcanbepoweredinoneotwoways.Oneoptionistoconnectthekeyboardtoyourcomputerusing

    thesuppliedUSBcable,whichwillsupplypowertothedevice,thensetthepowerselectswitchtoUSB(extremeright

    position).TheotheroptionistoconnectaPSU(notsupplied)andsetthepowerswitchtoDC(extremeletposition)to

    powerthekeyboardromthemains.TherequiredPSUoutputspecsare9V,dc,600-1000mA,centerpinpositive.

    4.2 INSTALLATION - PC

    ThelatestReMOTESLinstalleriscompatiblewithWindowsXPSP2,XPX64andVista(32and64biteditions).

    1. ConnecttheReMOTESLCompacttoyourcomputerviaUSBandensureitisswitchedon.ItheWindows

    FoundNewHardwareWizardopensclickCanceltocloseit.Iyoualreadyhaveanolderversiono

    AutomapUniversalinstalled,makesuretheAutomapServerisNOTrunning.

    2. Double-clickonReMOTESLSetup.exetoruntheinstaller.

    3. Whilstthedriverisinstalling,theollowingmessagemayappear:

    OncetheoperatingsystemhasbeenuploadedtotheSLCompactyouwillbepromptedtoturntheunitoand

    backonagainbeoretherestotheupdatesaresenttoit.

    5. TowardstheendotheinstallationtheAutomapPlug-inManagerwillopenautomatically.

    Selecttheplug-insyouwanttousewithAutomapbydraggingthemromthelet-handlisttotheright-hand

    list,thenclickOKtoclosethePlug-inManagerwindowandcompletetheinstallation.

    haveanolderversionoAutomapUniversalinstalled,makesuretheAutomapServerisNOTrunning.

    2. MountReMOTESLInstaller.dmganddoubleclickonSetupReMOTESLtoruntheinstaller.

    3. DuringinstallationtheAutomapPlug-inManagerwillopenautomatically.Selecttheplug-insyouwantto

    usewithAutomapbydraggingthemromthelet-handlisttotheright-handlist,thenclickOKtoclosethe

    Plug-inManagerwindow.

    4. TheReMOTESLCompactHardwareUpgradeapplicationwillalsorunautomatically(watchout-thiswindowmay

    openbehindthePlug-inManagerandInstallerwindows!):

    SelecttoupdatetheoperatingsystemandAutomaptemplates.IyouuseProToolsorDigitalperormerthenselect

    theappropriateHUIupdatetoo.OncetheoperatingsystemhasbeenuploadedtotheSLCompactyouwillbe

    4.4 CONNeCTING THe SL COMPACT

    IyouwanttocontrolsotwareusingtheSLCompact,connectittoyourcomputerusingthesuppliedUSBcable:

    MIDIdatabetweenyourcomputerandhardwareMIDIdevices.Forthis,theSLCompactmustbeconnectedtoyour

    Theverticalcolumnovebuttonstotheletothedisplayarethemodeandmenubuttons.Theseallowaccessto

    settingsthataectindividualcontrolswithinatemplate(Edit),generaltemplatesettings(Template)andalsotheoverall

    keyboardsettings(Global).Whilstinanyotheeditmenus,thescreendisplaysavailablesettingsandtheencodersand

    buttonsalignedwithasettingcanbeusedtoeditit,asollows:

    UsethePAGEUP/DOWNbuttonstoscrollthroughallpagesoavailablesettingsinaneditmenu.IonlyusingtheSLCompactorAutomapUniversal,theonlyeditmodeyoumayneedtoaccessistheGlobalmenu.SeetheGlobalMode

    sectionordetails.

    Hereisabreakdownoeachmode:

    Play mode

    ThisisthedeaultmodeortheSLCompactandtheonethatwillbeactivewhenthekeyboardpowersup.Thismode

    shouldbeactivemostothetime,asitstheonetousewhenusingAutomaporstandardtemplatestocontrolsotware

    orhardware.Atermakingchangestoanysettingsinoneothethreeeditmenus,pressthePLAYbuttontoreturntoplay

    modesothattheLEDnexttothebuttonilluminates.

    Template menuThismenuallowsaccesstosettingsthataectthecurrentlyselectedtemplate.PresstheTEMPLATEbuttontoaccess

    thismenuandthenusethePAGEUP/DOWNbuttonstoscrollbetweenthetwopagesoopt ions.PressingtheTEMPLATE

    buttonasecondtimewillaccesstheKeyboardZonesMenu,wherethekeyboardcanbesplitintozonesorplaying

    dierentinstrumentswithinthesametemplate(seetheKeyboardZonesMenusectionordetails).Repeatedlypressthe

    TEMPLATEbuttontoswitchbetweentheTemplateMenuandKeyboardZonesMenu.

    Edit mode

    Thismodeallowsaccesstotheindividualsettingsoanyassignablecontrolwithinthecurrentlyselectedtemplate.

    Controlsthatcanbeeditedinthismodeare:encoders,buttons,drumpads,transportcontrols,pedals,pitchandmod

    wheels.PresstheEDITbuttontoactivateEditmodeandthePAGEUP/DOWNbuttonstoscrollbetweenthepageso

    settingsorthecurrentlyselectedcontrol(whereavailable).Toactivateadierentcontroloreditinginthismode,press

    andholddowntheEDITbuttonandoperatethecontrol.

    Global Menu

    ThismenuallowsaccesstothegeneraldevicesettingsontheSLCompacteg:memoryprotect,andwheel/drumpad

    calibration.PresstheGLOBALbuttontoaccessthemenuandthenusethePAGEUP/DOWNbuttonstoscrollbetween

    thesevenpagesosettings.

    Write button

    TheWRITEbuttonallowsyoutosavesettingsandconrmactionsontheSLCompact.WhilstinPlay,EditorTemplate

    modes,pressingWRITEwillsaveallchangestothecurrentlyselectedtemplatebyrsttakingyoutoascreenwhereyou

    cansetthetemplatenameandchoosewhichothe40memorylocationsyouwanttosavethetemplateto.Onceyouhave

    setthese,pressWRITEagaintoconrm.PressingWRITEwhilstintheGlobalmenusavesallGlobalsettings.

    4.7 TeMPLATeS-WHAT ARe THeY AND HOW DO I SWITCH BeTWeeN THeM?

    AllthesettingsoreveryindividualcontrolaccessedinEditModeandthesettingsaccessedintheTemplateMenucanbe

    savedtotheSLCompactsinternalmemory,andthenrecalled.Agrouposavedsettingsiscalledatemplate.

    Asanexampleotheuseotemplates,youmayhavetwosynthesizers(sotwareorhardware)thatyouwanttocontrol

    withtheSLCompact.Todothis,youwouldhavetoprogrameachcontrol(setittosendthecorrectMIDIdataandname

    itappropriately)oronesynthandsaveallsettingstoamemorylocation,thenprogrameverycontrolortheothersynth

    andsaveallsettingstoadierentmemorylocation.Thisprovidesyouwithtwotemplates,oneoreachsynth.Now,to

    controleachsynth,youcansimplyswitchbetweenthetwotemplates.

    Thereisspaceor40templatesontheSLCompact.Templates1-33arepre-programmedstandardtemplates(designed

    byNovationtoworkwithpopularsotwareinstruments),templates35-36areblankusertemplatesandtemplates34,

    37-40areAutomaptemplates.YoucannotdeleteanytemplatessothattherearelessontheSLCompactbutyoucan

    overwriteanytemplatebyeditingandthensavingit,orbyuploadingoneromyourcomputer.

    Thereareourwaystoswitchbetweenthe40onboardTemplates:

    TEMPLATE UP/DOWN buttons thesearelocatednexttotheSpeeddialinthetopletcornerotheSLCompactsront

    panel.Pressingthemstepsup/downthroughthetemplatesoneatatime.

    Quick Jump pressingtheTEMPLATEUP/DOWNbuttonstogethercallsup16templatesontheSLCompactsdisplay.

    Templates1-8appearonthetoprowand33-40onthebottomrow.Usethebuttonsdirectlyaboveandbelowthescreen

    toselectthecorrespondingtemplate.Forexample,pressbutton3ontherowabovethescreentocalluptemplate3,or

    pressbutton6ontherowbelowtoselecttemplate38.ThePAGEUP/DOWNbuttonscanbeusedtoscrollthetoprow

    throughTemplates1-8,9-16,17-24and25-32.

    Menu/Function button pressingtheMENUbuttoninPlaymodeaccessestheQuickMenuthatallowsthecoretemplatesettingssuchasTransposeandCommonportroutingtobechanged.Therstoptiononthisscreenistemplatenumber,

    whichshowsthecurrentlyselectedtemplate.Changethisvalue,usingtheencoderaboveorbuttonsaboveandbelow,to

    changethecurrentlyselectedTemplate.WhenyoupressMENUagain,thenewlyselectedtemplatewillbeactive.

    Use any assignable button or drumpad anyassignablebuttonordrumpadwithinanytemplatecanbeusedtoselect

    oneotheonboardtemplates.Thiscanbeuseulorquicklyswitchingtoadierenttemplate.Tosetthisup,thebutton

    mustbeselectedoreditinginEditModeandthenthe Controlsettotemplateandthedesiredtemplatenumberset.

    SeetheEditModesectionordetails.

    Whenyouswitchtoadierenttemplate,thenumberandnamewillappearbriefyonthedisplay,beoreitswitchesto

    showingtheparameternamesandvaluesothecurrentlyselectedrowocontrols.Toseethenumberandnameothe

    currentlyselectedtemplate,youcanpressandholdthePLAYbuttonatanytime.

    TheSLCompactwillloadtemplate1bydeaultwhenthekeyboardpowersup.Tochangetheloaduptemplatetoa

    dierentnumber,youmustselectthetemplateyouwanttobeactiveonstartup,thenpresstheGLOBALbuttonto

    accesstheGlobalMenu,thenpresstheWRITEbuttontosavetheGlobalsettings.Thattemplatewillnowbeactiveevery

    timetheSLCompactispoweredup.

    IyouhavesettheSLCompactuptoworkinAutomapmodethentherelevantAutomaptemplatewillbeselectedwhenyou

    launchyourmusicsotware,althoughyoucanswitchawayromandbacktothistemplateasyoupleaseusinganyothe

    processesdescribedinthissection.

    Automapisarevolutionarysystemorcontrollingsotwareplug-insandsequencersusingtheSLCompact.Certain

    templatesontheSLCompactarereservedorusewithAutomap.Thesearetemplates34and37-40.Toavoidproblems

    whenusingAutomapwesuggestthat,unlessinstructed,youdonoteditthesetemplates.

    Automapworksintwodierentways,AutomapUniversalandSequencerAutomap.

    5.1 AUTOMAP UNIVeRSAL

    AutomapUniversalisapioneeringsystemthatallowsautomaticmappingosotwareparameterstotheSLCompact.Italsoprovidesaquickandsimplelearnsystemwhichyoucanusetocreateyourowncustomcontrolmaps.Automap

    UniversalcanbeusedtocontrolanyVST,AUorProTools(RTASorTDM)ormatplug-ininanysequencer(noteProTools

    plug-inormatsupportisonlycurrentlyavailableonMac).ItcanalsobeusedtocontrolthemixerinCubase,Nuendo,

    SonarandTracktion.ItisalsopossibletocontrolhardwareMIDIdeviceswithAutomapUniversalusingtheAutomap

    MIDIclient.

    TouseAutomapUniversalyoumustselecttheAutomapUniversaltemplate(template38)ontheSLCompactandrunthe

    AutomapServersotwareonyourcomputer.TheAutomapServerhandlescommunicationbetweentheSLCompactand

    theso twareyouarecontrolling.WhenyouruntheServertheAutomapUniversalwindowwil lappear.Thisisaresizable,
