English 341, Spring 2016 10:50 TTh, MYBK 300 Dr. Julia Eichelberger 26 Glebe St, Room 201 843.953.5646 1-2:30 MW COURSE DESCRIPTION: A study of selected texts by and about residents of the U.S. South, with an emphasis on works produced since 1900 that reflect the social and cultural changes the region has experienced over time. We’ll begin the semester with poems, essays, fiction, folktales, and songs that address topics often associated with Southern history and culture. After this cornucopia of varying interpretations of “Southern” themes, we’ll turn to more in-depth studies of several individual writers. Some of my favorite writers are on this list, so I’m eager to explore them with you. Required Texts Andrews et al, eds. Beasts of the Southern Wild Film clips will be shown in class but students must view the entire film at home: check out or rent a copy. Welcome to English 341! This upper-level English course requires a lot of reading (several hours per week) and numerous kinds of writing—notes, short papers, exam essays, and a longer analytical essay using library sources. Written assignments help you understand the literature and develop your own responses to it. I look forward to discussing these texts with you and helping you succeed on your papers and exams.
