Fig 1.3 Appropriate Jack Stand Placement

1. Run engine until warm. Cold engine oil does not flow smooth enough for all of it to

be emptied out of the engine.

2. Park car on aflat surface. If you park on a slope some of the old oil may remain in the

oil pan.

3. Jack up the car and place jack stands in appropriate spot. Ramps will work just as well. Warning: Jacking up the car and placing jack stands in the

wrong spot can lead to serious damage to the car and more importantly you.

4. Open hood by pulling hood release latch under driver side dash,

and unlatch hood. Caution: The hood will stay open on its own due to

hydraulic poles, if poles are weak be safe and use a pop rod to keep hood open.

5. Remove oil fill cap.

Fig 2.5 Location of Oil Fill Cap

1. Locate oil drain plug.

It will be located on the side of the oil pan facing the right front

wheel.

2. Place oil drain pan under oil pan.

Oil will stream out fast at first, so be sure to compensate by

placing oil drain pan closer to the right front wheel.

3. Place 17mm socket on socket wrench and place socket on drain plug.

4. “Crack” drain plug, which means to begin loosening.

If the drain plug is too tight and you cannot begin to loosen it,

try placing your left hand on the wrench and tap your left hand

with your right to “crack” the drain plug.

5. Once the drain plug is loose, unscrew and remove it from pan.

To prevent oil from spilling out prematurely, push the drain plug

in while you screw it out.

If you accidently drop the drain plug in the oil pan, that’s ok,

wait until all oil is drained and cooled down and simply fish it

out.

20-30 minutes will be an adequate amount of time for oil to fully

drain.

Caution: Oil pan and drain plug may be hot, consider wearing

gloves.

6. Clean drain plug and replace the washer. The washer will be found in the oil filter kit.

7. Replace drain plug and tighten. Caution: Do Not over tighten, over tightening can lead to stripping of the aluminum oil pan, set your torque wrench to 25Nm and tighten drain plug, if you do not have a torque wrench, hand tighten drain plug then place wrench on the plug and use 2 fingers to additionally tighten the drain plug.

8. Remove jack stands and replace car to its position on the ground. If your car is on ramps simply leave it on the ramps until the oil change in complete. Warning: Never start car without oil to back off of ramps, starting the car without oil will lead to permanent engine damage.

1. Locate oil filter housing.

2. Use 36mm socket and wrench to loosen oil filter housing cap.

Caution: Cap is plastic so be careful not to loosen at an angel as it might break threading.

3. Remove oil filter. The oil filter will be attached to the cap and it will be soaked in oil, place rag underneath filter so not to drip oil on engine bay.

4. Place oil filter and cap on a rag.

5. Remove oil filter from cap. You can use a plastic sandwich bag to put the oil filter in, place your hand in the bag grab the filter and pull off cap, turn the bag inside out to keep the dirty filter in the bag.

6. Remove the o-ring (gasket) from the oil filter cap and replace with the new one included in the oil filter kit.

Remember as with any gasket, coat it in oil, this will help form an initial seal between the cap and housing.

7. Place new oil filter on cap.

8. Replace assembly in car and tighten. Tighten by hand first and as with the drain plug set the torque wrench to 25Nm and further tighten, and if you do not have a torque wrench, use the two finger method again.

9. Wipe off any access oil that may have spilled.

Replacing Oil Filter (Cont)

1. Using a funnel add 6.5 quarts of oil letting each bottle drain

completely. Caution: Funnels may block the flow of oil, so you may have to keep an eye on how much oil you are adding, so you do not overflow out of the funnel.

2. After adding all of the oil, remove funnel and replace oil fill cap.

3. Remove any tools that may have been left on engine bay. Warning: Tools that are left on engine bay may get caught on moving parts once engine is started, this can lead to serious engine damage.

4. Start and let car run for a few minutes. 5. When car is running check underneath and make sure there are no

leaks. If car is still on ramps now it is safe to back down off of them.

6. Once car is off ramps and there are no leaks, shut car off.

Adding Oil

Fig 10.1 Adding Oil with Funnel

1. Locate oil dipstick.

2. Pull oil dipstick out.

3. Check oil level.

This is done by looking at the end of the stick, the end of the stick will have a different material than the rest of the stick and will be coated in oil, the oil should be coated in between the 2 notches. If the oil level is below the 2 notches add ¼ quart and recheck, repeat that until the level is right. The oil level should not be high because 6.5 quarts is what the manufacture recommends.

4. Once level is good, replace oil dipstick.

5. Close hood.

By being the owner of one of the most decorated cars of all time,

you have a few responsibilities. One of the most important

maintenance responsibilities is an oil change.

Many people do not realize the importance of the oil change. By

changing the oil of a car on schedule, it will extend the life of the

car by years and thousands of miles.

Many people do not trust the typical “quick lube” shop with their

car because of their use of low grade oil and lack of perfection

that most people want. If you are one of these people and you

want the best out of your car here is a guide to changing the oil

on your BMW E36 M3.

By following these instructions closely, even the not so

mechanically inclined individual can perform this important task.

If you do not feel comfortable working on your car, your local

BMW dealership will perform the service with the perfection you

desire.
