Read “How to Tell a True War Story”

Answer Questions

Homework: Finish “How to Tell a True War Story” and read “The Dentist” and answer questions

The Things They Carried Unit Objectives

Students will begin the unit by examining various elements of media to discuss the emotions and perceptions surrounding war (especially the Vietnam War). Students will also gain a better understanding of the historical background for the Vietnam War so they have an appropriate context in which to discuss the events that occurred. Because O’Brien’s writing demonstrates a strong and unique way to develop characters, students will mimic some of his literary techniques used in the novel to demonstrate their understanding of concepts like characterization.

Essential Questions:

What is war? How do we make sense of it?

How does an individual make life choices and how can an individual make sure that those choices are right for him or her?

How do a person’s actions define him or her?

What is truth? Can there ever be a “true” story?

How does war change the individual and society?

Preparing Questions for a Socratic Smackdown

Levels of Questioning

“Proficient readers actively revise their understanding of the text and its importance as

they read. After a close reading, they can express a cogent synthesis of the overall

meaning of the text and evaluate it in light of other texts and experiences--the goal for all

readers.” -The College Board

Level One - Factual factual--can be answered definitely with facts

address key elements of the text

answers found directly in the text or by information readily available in outside sources

have one correct answer

require reading of the work, but require little thought or understanding

good answers lead to an accurate and complete summary of the text

The Devil and Tom Walker:

Example: What is supposed to be hidden under one of the big trees beside the inlet?

Example: What is the climax of the story?

Level Two - Interpretive inferential--answers to these questions may be implied rather

than stated directly in the reading

address motive of author or a character

reader must make inferences based on specific information they can cite to back up their conclusions

found by following patterns and seeing relationships among parts of the text

call for longer answers and more thinking

require reading of the work AND consideration of what has been read

good answers lead to an identification of the significant patterns

The Devil and Tom Walker:

Example: How are the trees in the swamp with the men’s names on them representative of their character?

Example: After the devil cuts down a tree, he burns it. What might this symbolize?

Level Three - Global

connecting--answers to these questions emphasize the “So what?” of the text

link text to prior knowledge, other texts, or human experiences in life

found by testing the ideas of a text against readers’ schema

require the reader to think more abstractly and relate the text to real life

good answers lead to an appreciation of the text and further discussion

The Devil and Tom Walker:

Example: What role could/should folklore play in our lives?

Example: What is the major lesson that readers are meant to learn from this story and how might the reader connect it to his/her own life?

Socratic Smackdown Questions -

Write five (5) discussion questions for The Things They Carried from either Level 2 or 3 for your given MOTIF!

Remember – these must be uploaded to Edmodo by 2/7 (A) or 2/8(B)!

REMEMBER, GOOD QUESTIONS…

Are open ended and require thinking about the text (textual evidence)

Ask you to interpret the text (“What does O’Brien mean by…”)

Question a character’s motives (“Why did Jimmy Cross…”)

Make connections to real world events (“How is this similar to…”)

Writing Prompt –Man in the Mirror –

He took me in, he was there at a critical time—a silent, watchful presence." Write about someone who has played such a role in your life or about someone whom you might wish had played such a role.
