2. INTRODUCTIONThe construction of a newrailway is a huge projectand each mile requiredRs.15 to 20 milliondepending upon: The topography of areaStandard of constructionAnd some other features 3. Why we construct a newrailway lines? The need of constructing new railway line arises because of one or more consideration such as: Political reason. Development of backward areas. To connect new trade centers. To shorten the existing rail link etc. 4. Preliminary investigations for a newrailway lineTraffic survey: It includes detailstudy of trafficcondition: Possible trafficthe railway linecarry. Standard ofrailway line. Promising trafficthe railway linewill carry. 5. Preliminary investigations for a new railway lineReconnaissancesurvey:This survey consists of a rapidand rough investigation of thearea by using equipments ofsurvey:Such as Prismatic compass Binocular pedometer Geodimeterfor measurement upto 80 kmdistance during day and nightUse of laser etcDistance upto 70 km can bemeasured using laser. 6. Preliminary investigationsfor a new railway linePreliminary survey:This survey consists of a detailedinstrumental examination of theroute to be selected in order toestimate the cost of the proposedrailway lineBy using:Total stationTachometerDumpy level etc. 7. Final location surveyOnce a decision has been taken for a particular railway line tobe constructed a final location survey is doneInstruments used are the same as in the case of preliminarysurvey Alignment is fully staked.More detailed project report is prepared. All working drawings are prepared. 8. Modern surveyingtechniquesIt includes: Satellite imagery Aerial photographs Contour maps Digital modeling. Photogrammetricmodeling sheets 9. CONSTRUCTION OF NEW RAILWAY LINES Once the survey completed then constructionworks begin It includes Land acquisition Earthwork and bridges Station building, staff quarters Ballasting of tracks 10. CONSTRUCTION OF NEW RAILWAY LINES Land acquisition: It includes: Width of formation. Side slopes. Width of berms. Borrow pits. 11. CONSTRUCTION OF NEW RAILWAY LINESEarth work for formation: The height of earth work depends on the high flood level. Mechanically compaction is done generally by sheep footroller. 12. CONSTRUCTION OF NEW RAILWAY LINESBridges construction:Bridges increased the cost of the railway project.Bridges may be: Reinforced cement slab bridges. Steel bridges etc. 13. CONSTRUCTION OF NEW RAILWAY LINESTrack laying:Once the formation is ready thenjust track laying are required. It consists:Laying of ballastLaying of sleepers and rails Fastenings 14. PLATE LAYING METHODS1) Tram line method:A temporary line laidby the side of proposedtrack.Modification of thismethod is the sidemethod.Side method areapplicable when theservice road is parallel tothe track 15. PLATE LAYING METHODS2) American method: Rails and sleepers arefirst assembled and thentaken to the site.At site track panels arethen unloaded eithermanually or with the helpof cranesFor concrete sleepersgenerally cranes are used.
