Moscow Power Engineering Institute (Technical University)

MPEI was founded in 1930 in Moscow at the very beginning of world power engineering development and was widened and enlarged with discovering of new energy sources, solving new scientific and technological problems, implementing of new methods of energy generation, distribution and consumption - MPEI is of the same age as Russian Power Engineering.Now MPEI is the largest educational and scientific centre, one of the main technical universities in Russia in the field of Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Radio Engineering and Electronics, Informatics and Computer Science. MPEI is rigged up with educational and scientific laboratories, offices and lecture halls with modern equipment and technical training aids. In 2010 MPEI obtained status of National Research University, since 1987 MPEI is a member of International Association of Universities. MPEI holds one of the leading places in annual official ratings among technical universities of Russia.There are 70 Departments in MPEI, 550 educational laboratories for students, more than 100 research laboratories and High-Tech Centre. Now more than 15,000 students and 500 Ph.D. students are trained at MPEI, including 950 foreign students and post-graduates from 65 countries.

STRUCTURE OF AN ACADEMIC YEAR

For students an academic year consists of 2 semesters starting on September 1 and February 7. The semester duration is 5 months including exam sessions. Winter vacation lasts from January 25 till February 6. Summer vacation is from July 1 till August 30. Educational programs at Ph.D. and D.Sc. courses as well as traineeship programs can be started any time excluding summer vacation period.

SCHOLARSHIP AND TUITION FEE

Scholarships for training foreign citizens at Russian universities are provided by Russian Ministry of Education and Science according to inter-government agreements. In order to get such scholarship foreign citizens should apply to their native Ministries of Education.MPEI can also accept foreign students for training on payment basis under individual contract or under contract with an foreign company or organization. Tuition fee for training foreign students at MPEI is established by MPEI Academic Council and can be changed once a year for new incomers.

LANGUAGE OF TRAINING

All training at MPEI is organized in Russian language. Those foreigners, who need to learn Russian are invited to MPEI Preliminary course, which provides training of Russian language just at MPEI during 1 year.Besides, training of both Bachelor and Master students on the specialty Informatics and Computer Engineering is organized in English medium. This course started in 1995.PhD course and traineeship may also be organized in English medium, but applicant must coordinate this with his supervisor in advance.

EDUCATION LEVELS

Preliminary course. Foreigners who graduated from secondary school or college without knowing Russian enter the Preliminary course to study Russian language and get prepared for further training at MPEI. During this 10-months course besides Russian language students study additional subjects: mathematics, physics, chemistry, informatics, engineering drawing. On completing the course students take an official state test in Russian language and get a certificate (if succeed).Bachelor's course. Those who graduated from secondary school or college and a preliminary faculty at MPEI or other Russian university can enter MPEI B.Sc. course (duration of study is 4 years) in different fields of study in order to get wide and deep basic education (in Russian medium). On graduation students receive a state Diploma of Bachelor of engineering and technology.Bachelor's course in English. Those who graduated from secondary school or college can also enter MPEI B.Sc. course (duration of study is 4 years) with training in English medium in the field of "Informatics and Computer Engineering". On graduation students receive a state Diploma of Bachelor of engineering and technology.Master's course. Holders of B.Sc. degree can enter MPEI M.Sc. course (duration is 2 years) in different fields of study. On graduation students receive a state Diploma of Master of engineering and technology.Master's course in English. Holders of B.Sc. degree can also enter MPEI M.Sc. course (duration is 2 years) with training in English medium in the field of "Informatics and Computer Science". On graduation students receive a state Diploma of Master of engineering and technology.Ph.D. course. Holders of M.Sc. degree can enter MPEI Ph.D. course (3 years) to prepare PhD-thesis in some research field and obtain the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in corresponding field.Traineeship. Those obtained higher education can apply for scientific or pedagogical traineeship (short-term up to 1 year) in all scientific and educational fields of study available at MPEI.

YOUR FIRST ARRIVAL IN MOSCOW

MPEI provides pick-up service for foreign students at the international airport or one of the Moscow railway stations on their first arrival in Moscow. You'll be taken to the university free of charge, if you arrive within working hours (from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. every day except Saturday and Sunday). Just let us know in advance.

ACCOMMODATION CONDITIONS

MPEI foreign students are provided with accommodation in MPEI hostel with separate floors for foreign students. Unauthorized persons are not admitted to the hostel. The hostel is situated in a 16-floor building and consists of two-room apartments with furniture, a bathroom and toilet in each one. Students live in two- or three-bed rooms. PhD-students and trainees may live in such rooms alone for extra pay. Rooms are furnished with beds, tables, chairs, lamps, wardrobes and bookshelves. All bed linen including pillows, pillow cases, sheets, blankets are provided by the hostel administration. There is a kitchen and a rest-room on each flour of the hostel. Internet connection can be provided for additional fee.In MPEI campus there are additional services (laundry, shops, repair offices, post-office, cultural centres, cafes and restaurants, etc.) and foreign students can use them on the same conditions as for Russian students. - See more at: http://en.russia.edu.ru/vuz/1866/#sthash.i5IO14FW.dpuf
