2015-16 School Highlights

Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers The PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.

Dino Di Carlo, Professor of Bioengineering Microenvironment control and automation for miniaturized systems. Applications in biology, medical diagnostics, and cellular and tissue engineering.

Jonathan Hopkins, Asst. Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Design and fabrication of advanced flexible structures, mechanisms, and materials. Applications in microarchitectured materials, additive fabrication, MEMS, precision flexure systems and soft robots.

Benjamin Williams, Assoc. Professor of Electrical Engineering Quantum properties of low-dimensional semiconductors in conjunction with engineering of novel electromagnetic structures. Applications in terahertz and mid-infrared radiation.

2015-16 School Highlights National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award

Henry Burton, Asst. Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Resilience of the next-generation of buildings in response to natural hazards while simultaneously incorporating sustainable practices.

Yvonne Chen, Asst. Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Engineering tumor-specific T-cells for cancer immunotherapies.

Raghu Meka, Asst. Professor of Computer Science Pseudorandomness, optimization hierarchies and hardness of approximation, communication complexity. Applications include big data.

2015-16 School Highlights

• Two UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award winners: Mark Goorsky, Materials Science and Engineering Steve Margulis, Civil and Environmental Engineering

• Three graduate students, one undergraduate and five alumni received the 2016 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.

• Undergraduate engineering team wins UCLA Law School’s $100K Lowell Milken Institute-Sandler Prize for New Entrepreneurs. Open to all UCLA students, law student must be part of team.

• CS junior Iris Cong named Goldwater Scholar.

2015-16 School Highlights

• Master’s of Science Online Program ranked #1 for the

second year in a row by U.S. News & World Report.

• Robert Englekirk MS ’65, PhD ’70, and Natalie Englekirk committed to a $500,000 gift, matched by the UC Office of the President, to create the Englekirk Presidential Endowed Chair in Structural Engineering.

• Vijay K. Dhir Chair in Engineering established. Just under 100 donors gave to create $1 million endowment for new chair.
