Education – built on open principles

• Academia – Publication – key aspect

- verification, - recognition, - education

• HE – more than just knowledge – know + how

• “Graduateness” – application / use

• Tension – Publish vs Patent ?

IPO Fast Forward 2012 Project Brief

• Bloodhound SSC (www.bloodhoundssc.com) is a world land speed record project which will create novel technologies and processes to achieve its goal of 1,000mph. We have designed the ‘Bloodhound Open Access User Community Model’ (BOAUCM), where IP generated from the innovative design/engineering will, via HEIs and open-source methods, be made available to UK manufacturing, principally SMEs, to improve the manufacturing competitiveness of UK industry. The value of making the IP open-source (free to access) is that both education and industry can develop and adopt new technologies and processes that have been de-risked, and can use the Bloodhound vehicle as a reference to improve adoption and exploitation.

• BOAUCM has been promoted by the University of the West of England (UWE) and an open-access data repository to capture manufacturing and design knowledge and expertise for KE. This proposal seeks to accelerate the process of KE through key stages, including developing the Bloodhound community to critical mass, KE and dissemination practices, and creating 10 SME demonstrator projects. Outputs of the project include engagement with over 100 UK universities, dissemination to over 1,000 SMEs, and a proven model that can demonstrate sustainability and contribution to UK manufacturing competitiveness.

Zenotech is a start-up company specialising in cloud based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Bloodhound@University supported a collaboration which resulted in attracting a grant to Zenotech from the RAE Ingenious Scheme - Ingenious is a grant scheme for creative public engagement with engineering projects http://www.raeng.org.uk/societygov/public_engagement/ingenious/default.htm

The SPEED project creates the opportunity for engineers to work alongside students to take part in a competition that addresses an engineering design challenge hosted by @Bristol Science Centre The project leverages the high-profile and exciting technical challenge of the Bloodhound SSC 1000mph car to engage engineers, teachers and students with a practical hands-on design competition, using the latest in online engineering software from Zenotech Ltd running on state-of-the-art computing from Bristol University.

Requirement from the driver, Andy Green, to design a custom steering wheel for Bloodhound SSC. The last steering wheel from Thrust SSC was not very comfortable (pictured right.)

Bloodhound SSC design evolution progressed along a conventional iterative design process

Design was being driven by functional requirements and slow to evolve. We used Bloodhound@University to help come up with a faster, unconstrained design process.
