The Trane Story

Trane was co-founded by James Trane and his son,Reuben. James, a Norwegian immigrant, opened a plumbing shop in 1885 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.Besides being a steamfitter and a plumber, James Tranewas also an inventor. James and Reuben incorporatedThe Trane Company in 1913—the same year Jamesdesigned a new type of low-pressure steam heatingsystem, Trane vapor heating.

The product line expanded further in 1925 with thedevelopment of the convector radiator. In 1931, Tranedeveloped its first air conditioning unit, the Trane unitcooler, and in 1938 its first centrifugal refrigerationmachine, the Turbovac™ Chiller. One of the key productsTrane developed during World War II was the aircraftengine intercooler, a more efficient and lighter-weightheat exchanger that enabled Allied war planes to flyhigher and faster than ever before. Trane also designed

and manufactured heat exchangers used on the Lunar Rover “moon buggies” for the Apollo moon landing missions.

In 1982, Trane broadened its residential and lightcommercial product lines by acquiring the central air conditioning department of General Electric. Thecompany advanced compressor technology in 1987 with the introduction of the Trane 3-D™ scroll compressorand the Series R® water chiller that featured ahelical-rotor compressor design.

Today Trane, a business of American StandardCompanies, is a leading supplier of building equipment,systems, controls, services and solutions. Althoughmuch has changed since 1885, one thing that hasn’tchanged is Trane’s commitment to excellence and serving its customers.
