Keep valves in order unless you are going to replace them all
1. Clean with a power wire brush 2. visual inspect face, margin, stem and

1. Clean Use a hot tank, Jet spray cabinet then wire
wheel in a drill Use body sander with 80 grit paper to finish
the surface
2. Check for Cracks2. Check for Cracks
inspect exhaust port and in between valves

Dye penetrant
3. Check for Warpage3. Check for Warpage
Straightedge and feeler gauge
4. Inspect Guides for wear4. Inspect Guides for wear
Bad Valve guides will cause 1. oil consumption 2. Poor seating 3. Valve breakage Should have .0015-.002 clearance use small hole gauge and mike or use pilot to find size of guide
5. Inspect Seats5. Inspect Seats
is it a pressed in seat
6. Inspect and repair studs and threaded holes6. Inspect and repair studs and threaded holes
7. Redo guides7. Redo guides
1. replacing guides cast Iron bronze 2. Oversize valve stem
3. Knurling use plenty of knurling oil ream wet clean thoroughly If valve mikes .341 Ream with a .341 and
go up .001 at a time until the valve fits snug but moves free.
8. Redo seats8. Redo seats
Grind or cut valve seat usually to 1/16 (.0625)
Intake width of a dime Exhaust width of a nickel
3 angle valve job 30, 45, 60
Seat must contact valve in middle of face and be even top and bottom all around.
On interference angle seat will only touch top side of valve when cold make sure it is at upper end on face
make sure pilot is tight in the valve guide (hint use pilot to find size of guide)
select proper stones & dress Do not ruin the diamond Seat will only be as accurate as the stone
redress the stone often If using cutters make sure they are set up
proper
9. Replace freeze plugs9. Replace freeze plugs
use a non harding sealant
(have not tried but heard)if a bolt is rusted in a block melt candle wax on the threads the wax acts as a lube & will allow it to be easily removed

1. Clean with a power wire brush
2. visual inspection2. visual inspection
inspect face, margin, stem and keeper groove
Check each valve for burned or pitted face caused by; sticky guides, Insufficient tappet clearance, weak springs, clogged coolant passages, warped valve stem, improper ignition or valve timing.
Carbon deposit worn valve guides, or damage seals
3. Mic stem3. Mic stem
Mike valve stem for wear if you feel a ridge with fingernail replace it
.002 wear Max. like to keep it to .001 Chuck valve in valve grinder and check for
warp
4. Grind stem end flat then bevel the end4. Grind stem end flat then bevel the end
5. Grind valve face5. Grind valve face
Make sure you know what angle to grind to 29, 30 - 44, 45
dress stone often Grind valve until pits are gone and face is
clean and smooth if margin is less then 1/32 discard valve
creates a hot spot
Before grinding valves check valve stem installed height on some engines valves are adjusted by grinding off the valve stem end
SPECIFICATIONS FOR VALVE SPRING INSTALLED HEIGHT ARE NOT PRINTED IN ANY BOOK. PLEASE MEASURE BEFORE GRINDING VALVES.
especially on Pontiac, Cadillac Chrysler, and Ford pinto and Buick engines.
Valve springsValve springs
Check for tension check for length (free height) and squareness check installed height check for coil bind if after market cam is
installed add shims to correct Don't add over .060
thickness
replace if any defects are found on springs Check rocker arms for wear Especially ball swivel type such as Chevy’s.
use
Check rocker arm shafts for wear make sure they are installed correctly or oil holes will not line up.
On rocker arm studs if replacement is needed I recommend drilling & tapping to install after market type screw in studs.
