LET'S SUPPORTWith the 2019 Grade 12 final examinations around the corner, there is still time for learners to work hard and achieve good results! We need to support learners by creating an environment conducive to learning so that they can achieve the marks they need to apply for bursaries. We asked a few readers what can we do to support learners.

"Parents should be involved in their children's education. They should support them and provide them with the stationery and equipment they need."ANNAH MONKOE (25), EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT PRACTITIONER, PHOLA PARK

"I think we should send children on a camp while they write Grade 12. That way, they can help each other and save time by not commuting.

Adult supervision is also necessary to further help

them."MAUREEN MOKWELE (44), MAHWELERENG

"We should help children with the chores at home so that they have more time to study. We need to encourage them to go to libraries, have mentors and check in with them when they have study groups. Check their books to make sure they understand the work."CONSTANCE KEKANA (42), FINANCE OFFICER, EXTENSION 20

"We should encourage learners to use quality time to read more and study. We should also encourage them to work in groups at the community centre during school holidays."TSIETSI MAAKAMEDI (29), CHILD AND YOUTH CARE WORKER, MOSHATE

"Parents should support their children by paying for extra classes. Youths should be encouraged to attend the camps and training offered by the stakeholders in our communities. If you know any learners, encourage them to apply what they are learning in school and to start studying early for exams."MARIA MACHOGA (31), PROGRAMME MANAGER, MOSHATE

HEAR FROM YOU!

MOGALAKWENA TIMES ISSUE 7 2019 3DEVELOPMENT

Dedication and determination to build a better future have

enabled 29 young people from Mogalakwena Complex’s host communities to graduate from the Zimele hub youth development programme.

Having mastered basic personal and entrepreneurship skills, they are prepared for their careers.

Some of the valuable skills they have learnt include: how to write a CV, how to prepare for an interview, the importance of networking, how to register on recruitment websites and agencies, how to start and run a business and principal marketing skills.

The participants were challenged to put their newly acquired knowledge to the test and develop a business plan, which they had to present to an external panel of judges.

The top three in this competition received help in making their dreams a reality. Their names were announced during the graduation ceremony in August.

The winner, Itumeleng Mogohloa, was awarded a cash prize of R10,000, the runner-up, Lesibana Joel Seema, received R6,000 and the second runner-up, Palesa Chaba, walked away with R4,000.

The participants who did not want to take an entrepreneurial route were challenged to develop and present a community project/social intervention that

To prepare the youth for their future careers, Zimele hub manager Tiny

Rankoe leads the Zimele hub youth development programme with the help of six peer counsellors (PCs).

The programme includes structured training in personal effectiveness, personal budgeting, professional effectiveness and entrepreneurship.

During their first training session, this intake of eager young people learnt how to prepare for an interview.

Eager to learn, the second group of Mapela’s young people recently started the nine-month Zimele hub youth development programme.

Some of the tips they found helpful were:• adopt a curious mindset;• elaborate your answers;• have an inspirational

story ready to share when necessary; and

• be present and listen intently.

“Through the youth development programme, we’re boosting the youth’s confidence and helping them to realise their potential and secure their future. I’m excited about seeing them grow over the next few months,” said Rankoe.

LOCAL WITH LEBANG

Doing to others what you would like them to do to you is a principle that

has always crossed cultural boundaries and still does. It’s the saving grace of diverse communities.

Care and respect are key Anglo American Platinum values. We strive to give everybody equal access to opportunities, regardless of race, gender or culture. We encourage information sharing, open communication and shared accountability. We believe in inclusivity.

In an inclusive environment, everyone feels welcome, valued, integrated and included. We achieve inclusivity when we remember that we should respect everyone around us in the same way as we would like them to respect us. Inclusivity means respecting and developing each person according to their unique talents and skills.

I strongly believe that, when we embrace the diversity of

backgrounds and perspectives South Africa’s people have to offer, it boosts our innovation and creativity. It increases our contribution to society.

Research supports our belief that a diverse, inclusive culture enhances productivity and ingenuity. It also shows that this kind of culture helps efforts to attract and retain the best people for each task. Research supports the notion that we achieve greatness when we acknowledge each other’s differences, learn from one another and work together. It confirms that doing this also increases our commitment, loyalty to one another and ability to cooperate.

The well-being of our people and our communities takes the highest priority at Anglo American Platinum. We accept all people and appreciate each person’s effort, and we’re impressed with the way in which people’s different skills mesh to make our operations work.

Please join us in our quest to make care and respect for all

a way of life. As Maya Angelou said: “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.”

Being given the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the business world

The business owners thanked Platinum and COENG for their newly acquired knowledge during their graduation ceremony on 24 August.

These graduates have been effectively equipped with basic business principles in fields such as general management, finance, human resources and entrepreneurship.

COENG managing director Casian Dendere urged them to realise their dreams: “Never stop trying. If you fall, get up and push back even stronger.”

COENG workshop presenter Louis Labuschagne added: “Your commitment and hard work has earned you these certificates. I’m proud of each one of you! By building a successful company, you’re creating local job opportunities. You’re not only boosting the economy, but also securing the future of those working for you.”

8 ISSUE 7 2019 MOGALAKWENA TIMESWELLNESS

“All of us need to play a role in building a violence-free society; a South Africa that we can be proud of,” says Mogalakwena Complex senior general manager Richard Cox.

In September, President Cyril Ramaphosa committed to providing more funding to

protect women and promised harsher penalties for gender-based crimes.

In an article published by the Institute for Security Studies, researcher for peace operations and peacebuilding, Liezelle Kumalo writes that research shows that preventive action should start at family level and that psychological and physical treatment for survivors is needed. More than ever, education for girls and women is an effective tool for woman empowerment.

She writes: "Understanding the causes of this violence is key to finding solutions. Traditional patriarchal attitudes about the subordination of women perpetuate structural gender inequalities."

The latest crime statistics, published in September, showed that violence against women is not abating.

Police Minister Bheki Cele said that violent crime in South Africa is fueled by high levels

of alcohol and drug abuse, and the fact that victims are often abused and killed by people they know makes it difficult to control.

He said that the police will set up more units to tackle family violence, child abuse and sexual offenses, and recruit more women officers.

The awareness-raising campaign, the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, starts on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends on International Human Rights Day, 10 December.

Some objectives of this campaign are to eradicate violence in our society and to mobilise all communities to promote collective responsibility for taking action against violence.

The campaign aims to encourage society to acknowledge that violence against women and children is not a government or criminal justice system problem, but a societal problem.

Support the campaign by wearing a white ribbon during the 16-day period. A white ribbon is a symbol of peace and shows the wearer’s commitment to never committing or condoning violence against women and children.

• Volunteer to help organisations and community groups who support abused women and children. Donating your time, knowledge and skills can make all the difference. • Speak out against woman and child abuse.• Encourage victims to talk about abuse and ensure that they get help.• Report any form of abuse to the police.• Encourage children to report bullying behaviour to the authorities.• Encourage men and to talk about abuse and actively discourage abusive behaviour.• Seek help if you are emotionally, physically or sexually abusive to your partner and/or children. Call the Stop Gender-Based Violence helpline at 0800 150 150.• Talk to friends, relatives and colleagues and persuade them to take a stand against the abuse of women and children.• Try to understand how your own attitudes and actions might help sexism and violence to continue.• Spread the message on social media using #16Days2019• Join community policing forums. Communities and local police stations are active partners in ensuring local safety and security. • You may want to also become a reservist. Reservists are members of the community who volunteer their services and time to support local policing efforts. Contact your local police station to find out more.

MOGALAKWENA TIMES ISSUE 7 2019 9WELLNESS

WHAT YOU DO COUNTS!

“We strongly condemn any act of violence against women and children and urge society to break the silence by reporting these crimes. As mandated by the constitution of the Republic of South Africa, we will ensure that these perpetrators are brought to justice.”

MAHWELERENG POLICE STATION COMMANDER COLONEL DORCAS MOSHIBUDI LETSOALO

“Violence against woman and children is a serious public health concern. We, as the Mogalakwena Task Team, call on each one of you to work together to end it!”

MAPELA TASK TEAM CHAIRPERSON MICHAEL MOSEAMEDI

“Any form of abuse affects a person's potential to thrive and reach their optimum capabilities. We need agents of change in our homes, our workplace and our communities. Stop gender-based violence!”

MOGALAKWENA COMPLEX SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MANAGER HILDA MOTUMI

The time for change is here and now – let’s take astand against abuse! Ending gender-based violence and ensuring the safety of women and children is a priority for Anglo American Platinum and our stakeholders. Silence, stigma and impunity have allowed violence against women and children to escalate for far too long; we need to hold each other accountable and turn the tide of violence.

#COUNTMEIN#CountMeIn is this year’s theme for the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, whichstarts on 25 November. Some of our key stakeholders have joined the

movement. Here’s what they had to say...

“Women uphold values at home and at work. As men, it’s our role to protect and honour them. Let’s pledge our support and eliminate gender-based violence.”

MOGALAKWENA COMPLEX SENIOR SOCIAL PERFORMANCE MANAGER LEBANG GAOBEPE

“Ending the suffering caused by the abuse of women and children starts with you and me. We need to lead by example, calling ourselves to a higher standard, teaching our sons to respect and honour women and our daughters that their voice matters!”

MOGALAKWENA COMPLEX PROTECTION SERVICES HEAD WANDA VAN ZYL

“Whether in fulfilling the role of breadwinner, mother, or educator or being a wellspring of compassion, every woman is worthy of respect and recognition. Children are our inheritance and precious gifts. They need to be loved, respected and cared for. The Department of Education, Mokopane Circuit, condemn violence against children and women. Anyone who witnesses violence against women and children must report it to the police.”

MOKOPANE EDUCATION CIRCUIT MANAGER MAKINTA RALEKGOKGO

10 ISSUE 7 2019 MOGALAKWENA TIMESEDUCATION

It's more than the amount of time you spend studying . It's also about the quality of that

time. Let's look at practical ways for you to make your study time more effective.

Determine and set your goals. What marks do you want to achieve for each subject?

DON’T DELAY, START TODAY Write down your test and exam dates and plan your study schedule accordingly. Break down tasks into manageable bits. At the start of the week, make a list of the things that you need to have done by the end of the week.

When you're in class it's important to take notes. You are more likely to remember information if you write it down. The aim is to summarise the informaton in your own words so that you can easily remember the facts.

ASK FOR HELPIf you don't understand the material covered in class, ask a teacher or fellow classmates to help you. Don’t be shy to raise your hand. It will help you to clarify concepts you don’t understand and your teacher will appreciate your interaction.

FIND YOUR LEARNING STYLEMost of us have a preferred way of learning. Get to know the learning style you’re most comfortable with and study in the ways you learn best.

Auditory learners prefer to learn by listening. Try reading your notes aloud and discussing them with other people.

You might like to record key points and play them back.

Visual learners prefer to learn

Anglo American Platinum offers bursary opportunities to learners every year, enabling them to have prosperous careers. Let this be your inspiration to work hard and achieve good results! There is still time to turn 2019 into the best academic year yet by developing a learning strategy.

by seeing. Try using colours in your notes and draw diagrams to help represent key points. You could try to remember some ideas as images.

Tactile or kinesthetic learners prefer to learn by doing. Try using techniques like role-playing or building models to revise key points.

STUDY TIPSIt’s simply not enough to read and highlight study material.

Flashcards are proven to be excellent memory reinforcement tools.

Remember to take breaks while you're studying. According to research, the brain is better equipped to retain information over short periods. Study hard for 30 minutes and then take a 10-minute break. It's important to avoid distractions, so practise self-discipline and switch off your cellphone.

REVIEW PAST EXAM PAPERS One of the most effective ways to prepare for exams is to do past exam papers.

This helps you to get used to the format of the questions, and — if you time yourself — it can also prepare you to spend the right amount of time on each section.

With an attitude of commitment to hard work, you can achieve academically and maybe qualify for a bursary in future!

SPECIFIC: Your goal needs to be well defined, for example, “Last year I achieved 55% for mathematics this year I would like to achieve 60%.”

MEASURABLE: Know if the goal is obtainable, do you believe you can improve by 5%?

ACTION-ORIENTED: What do you need to do to ensure you achieve your goal? Develop a learning strategy, study harder and ask a teacher for help if you don't understand the work.

REALISTIC: Dont, for example, set a goal to study for three hours every day, if you know you don't have the time or won't be able to commit to it.

TIME-BASED: It's important to plan a study schedule and to commit to it to achieve your goal.

REMEMBER WHEN SETTING GOALS: THEY HAVE TO BE SMART

SMART“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

Ask him questions to help him understand how his behaviour affects others: “Is what you did respectful?” “Did you hurt someone?” “How would you feel if someone treated you that way?”

Listen attentively to what he says, while keeping in mind that children can unlearn bullying behaviours. He needs to know that it's okay to admit that he has made a mistake.

Explain to him that you don’t treat him the way he has been treating his classmates because you love and respect him. It is important that you teach him to take accountability for his actions. He needs to know that, if he keeps behaving this way, there will be consequences.

Remind him of how proud you are of him. It is important for him to know his worth and be sure that he can always come to you for help. Teach him honour and respect for other people by mentioning healthy role models.

Ask your son’s teacher to keep you up to date on the situation at school. More importantly, remember that you are a good parent and asking for help is not a failure.

ADI Dear Rakgadi,

Help! My 12-year-old son is a bully! I couldn't believe it when his school recently phoned to tell me that a classmate had complained that my son was bullying him. They said that my son and his friends have been beating up his classmates and have been guilty of name-calling.

This broke my heart. No mother wants to hear that her child is a bully. I am so upset about this, because I know bullying is a serious issue.

My son has always been a kind-hearted and hard-working boy, but recently his marks have dropped and he has become very quiet. Rakgadi, how can I help my son? Where do I start?
