I want to take this opportunity to welcome all our Churchnet members and guests to the 14th Annual Gathering of “Churchnet—A Baptist Network Serving Churches.” Churchnet is a ministry of the Baptist General Convention of Missouri. We continue to be committed to serving churches. We are delighted to be meeting at First Baptist Church of Lee’s Summit for the Annual Gathering, and we are grateful for the hospitality of this church family. We are completing the first year of our implementation of our Vision 2020 Strategic Plan focused upon Engaging the Future with Hope. Our theme for this year’s Annual Gathering is Engage the Future through Missional Collaboration.

Rev. Samuel C. Tolbert, Jr. pastor of Greater Saint Mary Missionary Baptist Church in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and president of the National Baptist Convention of America International, Inc., will be speaking during our Friday evening worship, and the Choir and Musicians from Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City will be leading our worship. Rev. Otto Echeverria, pastor in Coatepeque, Guatemala, and president of the Guatemala Baptist Convention, will be speaking during our Saturday morning worship. Churchnet is celebrating 10 years of partnership with the Baptist in Guatemala this year. The Saturday worship will be led by the Choir and Musicians from First Baptist Church of Lee’s Summit.

Our officers, board of directors, committees, and network staff have all been working hard in preparation for the meeting. I want to say a special thank you to our convention officers: Donna Potts, President; Forestal Lawton, Vice President; and Melody Pryor, Secretary. It is a tremendous privilege for me to serve as Executive Director of Churchnet. The Board of Directors and our network committees will be sharing reports during the annual gathering sessions. This book of reports includes written reports from our institutional partners. Several of these partners have provided video reports for our churches. You can access them on the Churchnet website. It is our hope this year’s gathering will provide a wonderful time of fellowship, worship, and learning as we explore how we can help our churches reach their communities for Christ. I also want to thank Randy Buffington, Minster of Worship/Arts at First Baptist Church of Lee’s Summit, for coordinating our worship and music.

Our Annual Missions Banquet will kick-off our gathering on Friday evening. Carol Bercian, Director of the Tabitha Ministry in Guatemala, will be our speaker. There is no charge for the banquet this year. We are grateful to William Jewell College for providing the banquet meal. In addition to our Worship Sessions, we will have several Workshops on Saturday morning led by church leaders and partners. Our Annual Churchnet Business Session will be held Saturday morning following a light breakfast. It will include recommendations from our Board of Directors, committee reports, and the election of our new officers and board members. The Annual Gathering will end with a Worship Session concluding at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. We are so glad you have chosen to join us for this year’s Gathering and we encourage you to visit our exhibits. It is our prayer that you will sense God’s presence during all the sessions and discover new ways to Engage the Future with Hope.

I also want to thank each church and every individual who has supported our ministries over the past year. Your support and partnership is vital as we seek to expand our services to our churches. Thank you again for joining us as we explore ways to Engage the Future through Missional Collaboration.

12 VISION 2020 ENGAGING THE FUTURE WITH HOPE

STEVE JONESPresident

THE BAPTIST HOMEServing Aging HumanityThis year The Baptist Home marks an incredible 103 years of ministry to the aging. What began as a vision given to a young Baptist pastor and his wife more than a century ago has grown into a vibrant ministry with campuses across the state and ministry connections around the world.

Perhaps our global ministry is a surprise to some; however, we feel very strongly God’s calling to reach out to our international brothers and sisters in Christ to provide the resources needed to minister to aging humanity in their home countries. Baptist Home President Steven Jones said it best, “Our field is global because aging is universal.”

Last year, we partnered with The Baptist Home Foundation and the Future Leadership Foundation to send two of our staff to Belarus and Ukraine to provide specialized training in Validation Therapy and Managing Finances to pastors, seminary students and social service workers. Through the work of The Baptist Home Foundation, our global aging ministry is expanding with work in Moldova, El Salvador and Guatemala, with possibilities of ministry in Cuba and Nicaragua as well.

On the home front, we are pleased to report that the new chapel and activities center known as the Goodwin LifeCare Center on our Ozark campus was completed last year with a dedication service held in October. Complete with a prayer garden, waterfall entry and meeting space for 300, this much needed addition has already been a blessing to the residents and guests of our Ozark campus. If you are in the area, we invite you to come and see this beautiful new addition.

Progress continues to be made on our fourth campus at Ashland. A master plan has been completed, and we continue to work on sewer easements and infrastructure needs which must be in place before housing construction can begin. If all goes well, we hope to begin breaking ground in the spring of 2017. If you would like to see the master plan or a virtual concept tour of the new campus, please visit our website at www.thebaptisthome.org/centralmissouri.

For over a century, The Baptist Home has been providing Christ-like compassionate care to the sick, the widowed and the dying. Last year, The Baptist Home provided nearly $2 million in benevolent care to our long-term care residents with a little over half receiving some assistance. We are ever mindful that we are accountable to our donors and to those who have gone before us who sacrificed so much to see this ministry grow and prosper. Our desire is to honor this legacy and to continue serving those entrusted to our care, to reflect God’s love to aging humanity here at home and around the world.

To learn more about our work, visit our website at www.thebaptisthome.org or find us on Facebook, where you can see a glimpse into the lives of those we serve! If you or someone you know would be interested in receiving updates on the progress of our Ashland campus, or if you are considering active living housing, assisted living or nursing care for yourself or a loved one, please call us toll-free at (866)454-2709. Thank you for your continued prayers and financial support of this wonderful ministry.

MISSOURI BAPTIST FOUNDATIONEdgar Stites, an obscure but active lay worker in a Methodist church in New Jersey, wrote a poem published in a newspaper in 1876. It was given to evangelist D.L. Moody, who in turn asked his associate, Ira Sankey, to compose music for it. Stites’ poem became the hymn “Trusting Jesus”.

Simply trusting every day; Trusting through a stormy way; Even when my faith is small, Trusting Jesus, that is all.

In June, the Missouri Baptist Foundation celebrates 70 years in ministry! The mission from the very beginning and still holds true today is to strengthen the mission and ministry efforts of Missouri Baptists. It is a sacred partnership of simple trust.

Established in 1946, the Missouri Baptist Foundation began with three accounts and assets of about $80,000. It has grown to manage more than $141 million in assets today, representing nearly 1,000 accounts which benefit over 100 churches and associations, over 20 Christian higher education institutions and over 80 mission and ministry organizations. These accounts also include retirement income to over 200 donors through charitable trusts and gift annuities. In fiscal 2015, the Foundation distributed over $12 million in principal and income to Baptists and other causes in Missouri and around the world.

The Foundation offers trust administration services; helping churches establish, grow and manage endowments; educational seminars and personal coaching on estate planning.

Missouri Baptist Foundation is not just about dollars and cents. It is also about partnering with gracious stewards to support and sustain ministry to share the good news of Jesus Christ. The Missouri Baptist Foundation Board of Trustees established the Fellowship of Christian Stewards in 2001. Individuals who exhibit transformed lives through whole-life stewardship (talents, time and treasures) are nominated as models to challenge the Christian community. The 2015 class of Fellowship of Christian Stewards included the following:

Verlyn Bergen, Nelson Fellow Morton & Ruby Rose, Estate Stewardship Carl (posthumous) & Delores Petty, Charitable Giving Leslie Nivens, Vocational Achievement Marian Wideman, Ministry Achievement 7th Grade Class of Firm Foundations Christian Academy, Junior Achievement

Thank you for your support and trust to assist you in serving God!

WINDERMERE BAPTIST CONFERENCE CENTER

JOHN BAILEYPresident/CEO

The year 2015 was the beginning of Windermere’s turn around. This was the first full year of President John Bailey’s tenure. There were several challenges and some victories in the year. While the turnaround has begun, there is still more to do.

This year, Windermere has centered on a four-part strategy for its ministry. We will build our ministry first on Christian hospitality. Second, we will provide fun outdoor adventure. Thirdly, we will stress authentic relationships. Fourthly, we will hold up Biblical truth. The mission of Windermere is this – We provide a Christian setting for life changing experiences.

Windermere is excited to report that in 2015, 20,753 guests experienced our campus and they stayed a total of 66,376 nights. We had a less than 2% increase from 2014. It was a small increase but much appreciated. Windermere continues to see over 1,000 professions of faith each year during our events.

In 2015 Windermere recorded 10,532 volunteer hours. While the number of volunteers was lower in 2015, the frequency of our volunteer hours nearly doubled. The national financial contribution of volunteer hours in Missouri is $19.42 per hour, so that means our volunteers donated $204,531 in free labor in 2015. Late in 2015, we initiated “Renew and Refurbish Windermere.” Many churches, groups and individuals have volunteered to do deep cleaning and renewal of our family cabins and lodges. This will continue into 2016.

In talking about the programming at Windermere we use a simply description. First, 25% of our contracts represent Baptist Groups, or those with Baptist in

their name. Another, 25% of our contracts come from what we call non church events like 4H, Muscular Dystrophy camp, Missouri State, Southwest Baptist etc. Another 25% come from like-minded churches, other denominations and Christian ministries. We have many non-Baptist friends who partner with Windermere. Finally, we have 25% of our contracts for family groups like reunions, vacations, or get-a-ways.

Windermere saw an increase in the use of The Forrest, our paintball course. It was in its first full year of use. The Edge, our ropes course saw nearly 3500 participants. Of course the inflatables in the marina, The Splash, continue to be a very popular recreation site. The other recreation sites: swimming pool, boating, cave tours, Frisbee golf, hiking, putt-putt and just experiencing the Lake of the Ozarks continue to be favorites.

Our Windermere-On-Wednesday blog penned by our President John Bailey weekly, is seen by over 1,000 followers. All friends of Windermere should go to Facebook and “like us.” Windermere has growing social media presence.

This year, began our financial health turn around. Not all financial goals were met in 2015. It is our desire to make 2016, the year we can secure debt refinancing.

Many have asked about how they could get involved in helping Windermere. We tell folks to become an Ambassador of Windermere. Twice annually a Windermere Ambassadors meet on our campus. The goal is to be informed on how to get our message out to churches, to be encouraged by some fun entertainment and to pray for our ministry.

WORD&WAYChurchnet has been a staunch advocate and financial supporter of Word & Way. Its trustees are grateful for the generous support of Churchnet and its affiliated churches and many of their individual members. Support through your cooperative giving plan, provision of constituent subscriptions and use of the Churchnet page are deeply appreciated.

During the past year, Word&Way:

1. Modified the print publication frequency to one issue per month and changed the format of the tabloid Word & Way newspaper to a slick full-color magazine beginning in July 2015 — Word & Way’s 119th year.

2. Published 12 multi-page, issue-oriented cover packages in the newspaper from January-June and six such packages inside the boldly designed magazine during the second half of the year. Issues ranged from “Millenials and Science” to “Toxic Leadership” to “The Death Penalty” to “Women in Ministry” to “Pastoral Succession” to “Retirement” to “Church Shopping” to “Remarriage” to “Racism and the Church” to “Church and School Cooperation” to the work of the Ferguson Commission to “Urban Church Planting” and the blessings of rural ministry.

3. Redesigned and distributed Between the Lines, the ongoing e-newsletter designed to complement both the Word & Way magazine and the upgraded Word & Way website.

4. Published regular practical and motivational columns in Word & Way in the areas of senior adults, finance, Internet/media and devotional thought.

5. Published special newsletter pages for Churchnet and The Baptist Home and The TBH Foundation.

6. Continued expanding news coverage to include Baptist work in the broader Midwest, including Cooperative Baptist Fellowship churches, American Baptists, National Baptists and others to encourage Baptist cooperation in matters of mutual interest and conviction.

7. Extended news coverage to meetings, other events and ministries, including the work of Baptists in Missouri but also cooperating entities in adjacent Midwestern states..

8. Focused on Word & Way’s mission to “provide Baptists with accurate, timely, relevant information with balanced reporting” and its vision to “inspire and challenge our readers to grow in Christ-likeness and to a deeper involvement in Baptist life.”

MISSOURI BAPTIST UNIVERSITYMissouri Baptist University continues its mission to provide a quality education to empower today’s Christian leaders through the addition of new academic programs, new facilities, missions and continued workplace excellence.

With study abroad programs, mission trips and teaching opportunities, Missouri Baptist University continues to make an impact throughout the world. English instructor Kelly Leavitt worked with We Teach in China, an organization sponsored by the Chinese Department of Education to teach with the Jiangsu Teacher Training Program for a two-week long program. MBU students ministered to England natives by working with Mosaic church plant pastor Ian Willson to connect with the community and unchurched through a coffee house ministry, open mic and discipleship. In addition, The MBU group traveled to several impoverished villages in Barahona, Dominican Republic to spread the Gospel through sports evangelism, children’s ministry, women’s bible study and village outreach.

This February, Missouri Baptist University’s Board of Trustees expressed its intent to develop a petition for the Missouri State Board of Nursing for a school of nursing.

In addition, the board approved funding to hire a director of nursing as part of the University’s 2016-2017 budget. Admission of nursing students would depend upon approval by the State Board but the University would hope to begin admitting students in the fall of 2017. Currently, the University offers an Associate of Science degree with a concentration in Pre-Nursing.

Missouri Baptist University also launched an Adult and Online Program division geared at offering higher education in a way that meets the challenges of busy adult learners, particularly those who have started and stopped their pursuit for a college degree. MBU’s new division offers four undergraduate degree tracks entirely online. The Bachelor’s in Professional Studies degree offers emphases in healthcare management, general studies and organizational leadership. In

addition, the division offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management—a program designed to assist students in developing the skills to organize, administer and facilitate sport programs at the corporate, agency, professional and amateur levels.

The new undergraduate programs will augment the University’s successful online graduate programs. Currently, hundreds of students from across the country are enrolled in MBU’s 11 graduate programs that are offered online.

The new Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program began this fall to prepare professionals to lead within colleges and universities and the ever-changing landscape of higher education.

The Higher Education Leadership program is among the most affordable programs in the bi-state area. Classes meet one time a week, allowing students to maintain their current roles in higher education. The capstone research project is integrated throughout the program, providing students the ability to complete the Ed.D. in 2.5 years.

The University will open a new 80-bed housing complex this upcoming fall to accommodate the demand for on-campus housing. The complex will be part of the third phase of Spartan Village, an innovative on-campus residential community featuring a range of living options that opened in 2011. More students are living on campus than ever before more than a 5 percent increase from just last year. All MBU housing has reached full capacity.

For the third time in as many years, Missouri Baptist University has been named as a Top Workplace in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Post-Dispatch gave MBU the “Work/Life Flexibility award,” for the high number of MBU employees who indicated MBU offers the flexibility to maintain a quality personal life. In fact, MBU rated the highest out of all organizations when those surveyed were asked to rate the statement “I have the flexibility I need to balance my work and personal life.”

SOUTHWEST BAPTIST UNIVERSITY

For more information about SBU, visit www.SBUniv.edu.

At Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, we are very intentional about spreading the gospel around the world, as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19-20 to “Go and make disciples of all nations.”

Through our Center for Global Connections, we will send more than 300 students on 26 mission trips in 2016 to destinations such as Senegal, Los Angeles, Baja, Brazil, Haiti, South Dakota, Belarus, Panama, Peru, New Orleans and Africa. Additionally, SBU accomplishes our mission of preparing students to be servant leaders in a global society through the integration of the Christian faith in academics and campus life.

While faculty and students are teaching and learning across campus, infrastructure improvements are enhancing our campus and educational facilities.

We worked with Christian artist Max Greiner of Kerrville, Texas, to construct a water sculpture, titled “The Great Commission,” to be the centerpiece of the Merrill Burnidge Memorial Forum and campus. It is a prominent visual reminder of Jesus’ command in Matthew to make disciples of all nations. The water sculpture has a globe being held by two Bibles with water flowing from the Bibles representing living water. We also replaced all the concrete and installed new, brighter lighting on the walkways surrounding the Forum.

Construction is now under way on the $2.7 million renovation and expansion of the Gene Taylor National Free Enterprise Center, which houses offices and classrooms for the Robert W. Plaster College of Business and Computer Science, as well as the department of history and political science.

Our Springfield campus, which houses the majority of our healthcare-related degree programs, has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years. We have more than 750 students enrolled on our Springfield campus, which currently is housed in a single building. We have purchased a 15,000-square-foot building near the current campus in Springfield to accommodate current and future growth, and it will include a new, state-of-the-art simulation lab and learning resource center when it opens this summer.

We also are planning to expand nursing degree offerings to the Bolivar campus. The Board of Trustees has approved a plan to begin a pre-licensure bachelor of science degree in nursing for the Bolivar campus with a goal of the first cohort entering during fall 2017, pending approval by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.
