For the first 40 minutes they looked like two evenly matched sides with a half-time score of 17-14 in favour of the home team. But in the second half, and as they have done so many times before, the Crusaders moved up a gear and blew their compatriots away. It was a wonderful advert for Super Rugby that ended 38-14 . The second match of the weekend took place in the wee hours of Saturday morning with the Jaguares welcoming the Chiefs to Buenos Aires. It was the one result we weren't certain of because the kiwis came out on top when two teams met at the same venue in March. The score line on that occasion was 27-30. This time around, it was just as much of an arm wrestle but the home team emerged 21-16 victors and thereby secured the right to host a semifinal next weekend. The third quarter-final was in Wellington, with the home-town Hurricanes hosting the Blue Bulls from Pretoria. The visitors scored the first try through Warrick Gelant (converted by Handré Pollard) but then the home team struck back with three tries of their own. After that, it was always the Hurricane’s game to lose but the visitors did come a lot closer than we expected. This was thanks mainly to a yellow card for a deliberate knock down, costing a penalty try and, later, another try when the visitors exploited their one-man advantage. But, in the end, the Hurricanes won 35-28 to set up a semifinal in Christchurch against the Crusaders. The last quarter-final of the weekend saw the Brumbies entertain the Sharks in Canberra for the right travel to Argentina to face the Jaguares next week. In truth, neither team deserved a place in the knock- out rounds and only got there because of the structure of the competition and by benefiting from dodgy refereeing in the regular season. Bulls Sharks Dumped Out of Super Rugby

It was quarter-final time this past weekend and the first match was in Christchurch where the Crusaders hosted the Highlanders For the first 40 minutes they looked like two evenly matched sides with a half-time score of 17-14 in favour of the home team

But in the second half and as they have done so many times before the Crusaders moved up a gear and blew their compatriots away It was a wonderful advert for Super Rugby that ended 38-14

The second match of the weekend took place in the wee hours of Saturday morning with the Jaguares welcoming the Chiefs to Buenos Aires It was the one result we werent certain of because the kiwis came out on top when two teams met at the same venue in March The score line on that occasion was 27-30

The third quarter-final was in Wellington with the home-town Hurricanes hosting the Blue Bulls from Pretoria The visitors scored the first try through Warrick Gelant (converted by Handreacute Pollard) but then the home team struck back with three tries of their own

Baby Boks Bring Back a Bronze Medal Again

It was a disappointing outcome of what looked like being a successful World Rugby U20 Championship after the pool stages At that point the Baby Boks were seeded number one meaning theyrsquod have to play the fourth seeded team in the semifinal

That turned out to be the defending champions France who after thrashing the Baby Boks in the semifinal went on to edge a bunch of juvenile delinquents (Australia) in the final All the Baby Boks had left to contest after being out-played and out-thought by the French team and coaches was the bronze medal in the 3rd4th playoff match against hosts Argentina

To their credit they picked themselves up off the canvass and dominated lsquolos Pumitasrsquo in that match and took the bronze medal again That makes it eight bronze medals in the twelve years since the tournament began (together with one gold one silver and one fourth place)

While in some parts of the world that sort of a record would be celebrated here in South Africa where rugby is more religion than sport itrsquos simply not good enough And we have to ask questions of a structure of youth rugby if we fail so often in the semifinals

Think about it eight bronze medals translates directly into eight failures in the semifinals of the tournament after twelve attempts Thatrsquos not good enough for a country with the depth of rugby talent enjoyed by South Africa

The question has to be asked what is SA Rugby doing about this lamentable situation

Third Time Lucky for Griquas in SRC

Probably one of the most interesting parts of this yearrsquos SuperSport Rugby Challenge (SRC) has been the exposure fans have had to clubs and club rugby that they might never otherwise have seen The final Sunday was a fitting climax to what has been an excellent competition

As has been the custom on double-header Sundays at community grounds the curtain raiser featured a couple of local club teams locking horns in front of packed stands The final Sunday was no different taking place at Saldanha Stadium on the West Coast the curtain-raiser featured Saldanha and Mamre

It was wonderful rugby that featured players in their 40s and others as young as 19 The home team has dominated Boland rugby this season and Sunday was no different Saldanha won 36-13 We only wish we could have seen more of this type of club rugby and wersquod like to issue a challenge to SuperSport for next year give us more of these community rugby festivals

The main event kicked off around 1430 and involved the defending champions Pumas against Griquas who have been in every one of the three SRC finals in the competitionrsquos history But this was knock-out rugby and history doesnrsquot matter when itrsquos being made

Griquas came out with a plan and implemented it to perfection putting Pumas onto the defence and forcing them to chase the game Going into the last quarter Griquas led 21-8 Pumas fought back and scored but the missed conversion still left them eight points adrift But then Griquas scored again and took the game completely away from the champions Final score 28-13

The U16 and U18 Western Province teams came through the SA Rugby Girls Week undefeated in Johannesburg when the two national tournaments concluded at Jeppe High School for Boys last Friday

The Under-16 team won all three matches and held sway over Border in their final match of the tournament with a 41-12 win The Blue Bulls and SWD teams earlier played to an exciting draw in their clash and were the only other teams not suffering defeats during the 24 matches played since Monday

In the Under-18 Week Western Province shared the undefeated spoils with hosts Golden Lions who also looked strong en route to their three wins which included a five-try win over Boland

The Cape side won 17-3 against the Blue Bulls to lower the Pretoria teamrsquos flag for the first time in the week The two tournaments provided an exciting platform for 736 female players to showcase their talents

U13 amp U16 Youth Weeks Kick Off

The U13 Craven Week and U16 Grant Khomo Week kicked off this week at the Hoeumlrskool Rob Ferreira in White River just north of Mbombela (Nelspruit) in Mpumalanga If you happen to be in the area you may get a kick out of seeing some of the stars of our rugby future in action

But you could still watch the matches if yoursquore located elsewhere in the country or the world because they are available on online You can find both the U13 Craven Week and U16 Grant Khomo Weektournaments on livestreamcom but donrsquot expect SuperSport quality camera work and production

But getting back to the two events themselves which saw 38 teams taking the field The 14 provincial unions were represented at the U13 Craven Week along with teams from Border Country Districts Limpopo Blue Bulls Namibia and Zimbabwe

The U16 Grant Khomo Week had the same 18 teams as represented in the U13 competition as well as a Pumas XV and an SA Iqhawe Impi side The latter team featured kids who played in the Carfindcoza Iqhawe Week for non-traditional rugby schools

According to Ruggaworldcom both competitions produced ldquoscintillating actionrdquo that highlighted ldquothe best provincial schoolboy rugby talentrdquo Indeed the first day of the U13 Craven Week featured numerous matches that were fiercely competitive five of which were decided by last minute scores

Meanwhile the U16 Grant Khomo Week also produced competitive rugby ndash there was one draw and four matches in which the protagonists finished within a converted try of winning or drawing the contest And of course there were a few convincing wins too Helpfully Ruggaworld has a page dedicated to following the action

Craven Week 2019 Heading for a Climax

It began at the beginning of last week with the U16 amp U18 Girls Weeks at Jeppe High Schools for Boys (see page four) in Johannesburg and the Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) Week which took place at Sentraal High School in Bloemfontein the same week

And this week the annual programme moved onto the U13 Craven Week and the U16 Grant Khomo Week (also on page four) at Hoeumlrskool Rob Ferreira in White River Mpumalanga

Next week SA Rugbyrsquos youth programme culminates in the U18 Craven Week and Academy Week competitions taking place at Grey College in Bloemfontein

Fortunately these too will be streamed on Livestreamcom so if yoursquore not close enough to Bloemfontein to go down to the ground you can at least watch the action on your laptop tablet or mobile phone

The two competitions are expected to follow the same format as the last few seasons meaning that the Blue Bulls Golden Lions Sharks and Western Province will field invitational sides in addition to their regular Craven Week teams

Zimbabwe and Namibia will only play in the Academy Week while Eastern Province Country Districts (CD) Griquas CD and Border CD will have the option of participating in the Academy Week The U18 Craven Week will again feature 18 teams and the Academy Week 28 teams

And given that there are two Jeppe old boys in this newsroom wersquod be remiss [not to mention ldquobe lambastedrdquo ndash Ed] if we donrsquot tell you that the two Golden Lions squads for U18 Craven Week 2019 contain no fewer than thirteen Jeppe boys ndash thatrsquos virtually the entire Jeppe first team thatrsquos in Bloemfontein this week

Interestingly SA Rugby Magrsquos Dylan Jack has picked out four teams that he thinks will be worth watching next week and no he didnrsquot pick the Lions For the record he picked Border Free State and both Western Province teams

We think that was a mistake but wersquoll see about that next week It will certainly add a bit of spice to the fixtures on the first couple of days (subject to change times TBC) Monday July 1

Jaguares Success is No Fluke ndash Jake

Speaking of Jeppe oldboys (see the previous page) one of the more famous of the clan is World Cup-winning former Springbok coach Jake White Not known for being shy about sharing his opinion our editorrsquos old school chum reckons that the success of the Jaguares in this yearrsquos Super Rugby competition is no accident

He makes the assertion in a column this week on AllOutRugbycom

ldquoIn 2012 the Boks failed to beat Argentina for the first time and they suffered their first loss in the Los Pumas rivalry in 2015 This year the Jaguares are Super Rugbyrsquos SA Conference champions

ldquoI canrsquot say itrsquos come as a surprise because rugby values breed success My son enjoys Superbru and he won his pool by backing the Jaguares in every game

Itrsquos great for rugby in Argentina and for the Pumas that through the Jaguares theyrsquore getting the publicity and experience of playing under pressure in knockout games on the big stage

ldquoPeople have said itrsquos unfair because the Jaguares are an international side I donrsquot agree with that because when the Crusaders Blues and Brumbies were dominating Super Rugby the majority of their squads were also international players Historically the dominant teams have the most international playersrdquo

And that right there is the nub of the issue There is little doubt that Argentina chose to use Super Rugby 2019 as an extended national trial for the World Cup In so doing the coaching staff has brought in and tested possible new talent at every opportunity

But we digress The ever verbose Jake has a lot more to say about exactly how the Jaguares and Argentina have achieved what they have in the past few season

The SA Rugby U21 Championship should also ongoing this weekend with three fixtures planned but as far as we can tell it is not being televised anywhere Unless you can find a streaming site (and if you do please alert us) yoursquoll have to go down to one of the three stadiums where the matches are being played on Saturday at around 1pm

For your weekend viewing pleasure

Our trusty Ultimate Rugby app has let us down this week ndash in a manner of speaking ndash because the only matches it lists for this weekend are the Super Rugby semifinal (see schedule alongside) But actually there is some other rugby on the go this weekend

The U13 Craven Week and U16 Grant Khomo Weekcompetitions (click the ldquoUpcomingrdquo tab on the right to see the fixtures) are playing out in Mpumalanga and will come to a climax on Saturday (and are being streamed)

And thatrsquos all the action we could find for this weekend Perhaps we should all use this relative lull in the rugby calendar over the next few weekends as an opportunity to store up brownie points for the coming Rugby Championships and subsequent World Cup in Tokyo

WP Emerges Tops at Girlsrsquo Rugby Weeks
