Wodonga Primary School values the importance of Community and a sense of belonging. It is one of our Vision Principles and the core of our school ethos. On behalf of our WPS school community, we extend our sorrow and sympathy to the families and staff of Wodonga South Primary School after the tragic accident last week. We were all saddened by the loss of a student and the impact on the family, staff, students and the school community. We send our support to WSPS and have offered assistance in this sad time.
GVBR
Our Great Victorian Bike Ride team has been busy training each weekend in order for them to be fit and ready for the 5-day ride in November. It is fantastic to hear of the progress of the team and their positive attitude and growth mindset. We are fortunate to have received some local sponsorship for our team:
- Washington Cyclisme – located at 4/4 Thomas Mitchell Drive, Wodonga. This local business is providing a riding jersey for each student on the team.
And these Clubs / Businesses have supported with donations of funds: - Wodonga Lions Club – Pictured left is Harold Cover meeting GVBR
participants Tara & Imogen. - Maxim Office Group - Lake Moodemere Estate
Thanks to these organisations for their support – we really appreciate it!
Slow Food Excursions
This week, our Year 3 classes will begin their final Slow Food excursion to the Wood Fired Oven in Albury. Each class will visit the Oven either this week or in the first week of Term 4 as part of their Slow Food program - check your permission notes for dates/times. This excursion is funded from the Slow Food levy and provides students with the opportunity to prepare food and cook in an outdoor setting. Students will be able to learn about this fabulous resource which is available to the public each month. Look-out for photos via our Facebook page.
District Aths
Congratulations to our District Athletics team who competed in Albury last Thursday. It was a fantastic day with some amazing results from our WPS team – we are very proud of your effort and achievements. We have many students who will now progress to the next stage of competition – Division Athletics. For a full list of results, click here…

URGENT – HELP NEEDED IN CANTEEN
Our canteen offers students the opportunity to order lunch at school or to buy a healthy snack for recess. Parents are a vital cog in the operation of the canteen, as volunteers assist our Canteen Managers with food preparation and delivery.
We are urgently seeking volunteers every day of the week in Term 4. Unfortunately, if we can't find enough parents to support our Canteen Managers, we may not be able to run the Canteen every day. Please contact the office on 6048 0300 or pop into the canteen and speak with April or Sindy.
Art Display
Check out our new Art Display in the school foyer - it looks amazing. Well done to our students who were inspired by the paintings of Jackson Pollock and the guitars in the Blue Period by Pablo Picasso. The students in 4MM and 4AW have spent many hours in the Art room this term creating their own guitars that combined what they had learnt about art form, texture and shape from these two masters, producing pieces that rocked.
Thank You – NE Water
North East Water kindly donated drink bottles to our District Athletics team to help them with hydration, prior to the competition last week.
We’d like to extend a BIG thank you to Anthony & Rebecca Burrell from North East Water for their generous donation. The bottles were filled many times throughout the course of the day.
Water Confidence and Safety - REMINDER
We are required to book sessions and instructors in advance for next term’s Water Safety program, therefore the Swimming levy needs to have been paid in full by this Friday (Sept 16th).
At Wodonga PS, we conduct Water Confidence and Safety sessions in Term 4 to ensure that all students have the necessary skills around water leading into the Summer holidays. These sessions are conducted at the Wodonga Leisure Centre and the Wodonga Waves pool.
Permission notes and information around payments were sent home two weeks ago. Please see your classroom teacher if you have misplaced your child’s note.
CANTEEN MENU ITEM: THIS WEEK’S SOUP
This week’s featured soup for Lunch Orders is Pumpkin.
2016 Write Wodonga Exhibition – October 5th
Our annual Write Wodonga celebrations are a great opportunity for families to connect with their student’s learning, in particular, the progress your child has made in his/her writing. There are a host of benefits from the Write Wodonga process, one in particular, is the student’s writing being published and the piece of writing meeting an audience. This is our 7th year of the Write Wodonga initiative and we are excited to bring our student’s creativity and originality to the community.
For new families who are not familiar with Write Wodonga, all students received a professionally bound blank book to publish a piece or multiple pieces of writing. In Term 3, students choose a piece of writing to publish and go about the publishing process. The school then has a special evening at school where we celebrate the published books, both as a whole school and as a year level. Below are the details…
Wednesday October 5
5:30 – 5.50pm Whole School Author Chair in Ariel Centre
5.50 – 6:20pm Year level exhibitions
6:20 – 7:00pm Pizza family fun in the Eating Area (under the shade sail)
Part of the evening includes an informal time at school with our extended school community enjoying a fun picnic dinner. We are offering families the opportunity to purchase pizza slices for those who wish to participate. Families may elect to bring their own picnic rug and family dinner instead. Click here to access the Pizza Order Form.
Write Wodonga’ Writing Institute’
In conjunction with the Write Wodonga exhibition, we are running a 3-day ‘Writing Institute’ with visiting author, Kym Lardner. This will involve student workshops, performances and “book building” sessions. The Institute with Kym is classified as a Cultural Performance and requires your cultural levy to be paid before the end of Term to ensure your child is included in the activities. If you qualified for CSEF, please check with Faye prior to paying.
For a full list of dates and times of each year level performance, please visit our website.
Lost Property
Outside the Library, there are 4 boxes of unnamed lost property. If your child has misplaced any item of clothing or lunch boxes etc, please drop by the Library to check through the items. At the end of this term, items will be donated to the Uniting Church Opportunity shop if not claimed.
Please note, that any lost ‘named’ items are returned to the student via their classroom teacher. And, if you have bought any second-hand items from the school, please remember to put your name on those items too (as we are quite often looking to return items to past students!).
DOLLARMITES BANKING
Remember, Tuesday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit.
For every deposit made at school, no matter how big or small, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits.
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).
If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement.
Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at Wodonga Primary School.
Student Investigations – Years 5/6
Each year, we conduct a special program (Student Investigations) for our Year 5 and 6 students which aims to build independence and develop responsibility as well as broadening their interests and skills. This year, our focus is on Challenge – creating opportunities to be challenged in experiences that are beyond the classroom program.
We have developed a different approach this year with students experiencing a full day of ‘investigation’ enabling students to experience challenges, develop problem solving skills as well as experience a final product or end point to their investigation.
This Student Investigation Day will be on Friday 28th October with students being able to choose their investigation. Students will soon choose their preferences and will find out early in Term 4, which Investigation they will be participating in.
The cost for the day is $20 – it is listed as Student Investigations on the Year 5 and 6 school payment invoices. Payments can be made at the office prior to the end of the first week of Term 4.
Specific information regarding each Investigation will be sent home in the first week of Term 4.

Do you work in the Dairy Industry?
As part of the Victorian Government’s dairy assistance package the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) is being extended to students currently enrolled in government and non-government schools whose parents own, share-farm or lease a dairy farm business; or those people whose primary occupation is working on a dairy farm.
You could be eligible for a one-off amount of $375 per student which will be paid to schools to offset the associated costs of Education.
If you believe you are eligible, please collect an application form from the school office and return it along with your supporting evidence, by Friday 18th of November.
For further information or to query your eligibility, please contact our Business Manager, Chantal Gardner by calling 6048 0300.
MATHLETICS
Weekly Winner
Congratulations to Georgie Buchanan who was the winner of the Mathletics Champion trophy last week with a total of 4500 points—well done!
eLearning Update
Year Six students have been experimenting with our newly purchased Spheros. Spheros are robotic spheres that ’talk’ to iPads. Students need to draw on their collaborative and creative skills to work in teams and figure out the coding required to make the Sphero follow different shapes on the classroom floor.
DISTRICT ATHLETICS RESULTS 2016 These students have qualified to go to the next level of competition – congratulations!
