From the

Director’s Desk . . .

America was not built on fear.

America was built on courage, on

imagination, and on an unbeatable

determination to do the job at hand.

~ Harry S. Truman

Happy July! Summertime, and the living is easy.

Whoever said that sure wasn’t talking about 2020.

The impact of three months of isolation seems to be

taking a toll. Long-term stress, grief, and loneliness

are difficult to handle one at a time, but together, our

resilience and strength are being tested. My prayer

for all of us is that we endure, we stay healthy, and

we find new ways to connect and create happiness.

The Center is in the process of re-opening. We are

starting slowly with limited seating, screening, and

physical distancing. It is nice to be welcoming people

back. And, if we’re strict with the rules, please know

that safety is our top priority.

What is really nice about re-opening is the brand

new look that we have! A huge thank you to Rose

Community for their investment into the Center’s

space. We have new flooring, new lighting, fresh

paint, new entry doors, and a ADA accessible

restroom. It’s bright and inviting. We hope to

have an open house in October to show it off.

October 18 is the Center’s 60th anniversary. It’s a

remarkable milestone — serving older adults from

our community with the mission of helping enhance

health and overall well-being.

We hope for another 60 years — probably not for us

— but for future generations. We’re adding to a

wonderful legacy. Thanks to all of you for your part.

- Sandie

2 eggs and toast $2 Oatmeal with brown sugar and fruit $2 2 slices of French toast $2

Orange Juice $1 Additional Non-Member Charge $1

Thanks for your understanding.

Message from the Board of Directors … These are challenging times for sure. Through it all, we are proud that the Monroe Center has

continued to offer carry-out meals, friendly visitor calls, and other assistance. The staff and

volunteers did an excellent job in making this happen, and your cooperation and understanding

with all of the safety precautions that we’ve implemented has been appreciated. Now, as we gradually re-open in accordance with CDC guidance, your cooperation is critical.

Temperatures, screening, hand-sanitizing, and masks are the new norm. Capacity limits are also

in place to ensure that we can maintain physical distancing. We’re happy that the service is continuing and that we’re back in operation. What has caused us

a bit of anxiety is the budget. While 60% of our budget comes from the Commission on Aging /

senior millage, we generate the rest of the funds from meal income, dues, corporate sponsors,

fundraising, and donations. Needless to say, we’ve taken a hit. Expenses on the other hand have not gone down. Our fixed costs — liability insurance, phone,

copier, trash pick-up, accounting — have remained the same. Although we haven’t been

purchasing as much food, the costs are skyrocketing. A case of hamburger was $250 before the

pandemic. A case of hamburger now is over $400. That’s one example. The amount of

disposable products that we’re using for carry-outs has also increased significantly. So heads up. For the next few months, we will continue to monitor our bottom line and may find

that we must pass some of these costs on to the members through increased meal prices.

Please note that this is our last resort. We take pride in the fact that meal prices have not

been increased since 2011. We want to keep our meals affordable, but we also wanted to let you

know now that this may be coming in the Fall. And, as always, please talk with the staff if you are

in need of assistance with meals. No one should ever go hungry. In community service,

Mark S. Braunlich, President of the Board

PLEASE HELP ~ SERVERS & DRIVERS NEEDED

WE DID IT!! We weathered the storms of Covid-19 and the remodel! We are open again

and have a fresh new look. I hope you will come back soon to check things out and join us for a meal. Which leads me to this request…

WE NEED SERVERS. As you can guess, operations in the dining room are very different,

with your safety coming first. Instead of guests standing in line to get the main choice, we are now offering seated service, with the wonderful volunteers serving the guests. But,

we need more helpers, especially as more members come back for meals. I am looking for volunteers who can do the following as servers: Work a 2-hour shift with a lot of standing/walking (11 a.m.—1 p.m. or 4 p.m.—6 p.m.) Wear a mask during the shift; serve guests, and sanitize vacated lunch spots in

between guests

DRIVERS. As doctor offices are opening, we need drivers to help some older friends get

to their appointments. Driving a senior is a wonderful way to volunteer because it is

surprisingly rewarding and you can easily manage how much time you want to give.

If you can help please contact Beth at the Center at 734.241.0404. Thank You!! ~ Beth
