Palestinian home in Jerusalem bulldozed

The home of the Al Abbasi family in Ein Al-Lozh neighborhood of occupied Jerusalem was demolished by the Israeli military on Tuesday in spite of a stay of execution from the Israeli courts.

The Israeli army arrived at around 8:30 am on Tuesday February 10 to destroy the 200 square meter house, constructed at a cost of NIS 700,000 (approx. USD $180,000). The house had been under a demolition order for a year, but the family had appealed the decision to the Israeli courts while they sought to get a building permit. The army decided not to wait for the court decision, suggesting that at times one arm of the Israeli occupation doesn’t know what the other is doing.

The Palestine Monitor spoke to Majd Ghaith, a photographer and filmmaker with the Wadi Hilweh Informa-tion Center in Silwan who tries to document home demolitions in occupied Jerusalem. “Actually it isn’t that unusual for them to carry out demolitions without the court’s permission,” he said.

Majd explained that the Israelis came up with “a new tool” for carrying out demolitions in 2012. “We built a cultural center in Silwan and they came to demolish it a few days later. So we asked for a demolition order from the courts and they said, ‘No we have a cleaning order, we don’t need court approval.’ They consider our center to be like rubbish, so they cleaned it up,” he sighed.

With regards to the demolition in Ein Al-Lozh, Majd said that the warning signs were there. “The police had scouted the area four or five times in recent weeks. The streets are very narrow so the bulldozer cannot enter at any time.” He explained that the Israeli police don’t normally enter the area or carry out patrols, but their presence in recent weeks indicated to the community that they were assessing when it was best to come back to the area with bulldozers.

The Palestine Monitor spoke with the Al Abbasi family in Ein Al-Lozh about the demolition. Mohammed Al Abbasi cut a forlorn figure as he pointed down at the ruins of his home from the porch of a relative’s house where his family have taken shelter. “We have women and children and they demolished our house… They demolish our homes but still we will stay. Allah will suffice me and he is the best guardian,” he said.

Separately, a small factory where six families were living was demolished on the Mount of Olives in occupied Jerusalem on Wednesday February 11. The Israeli army confiscated NIS 400,000 (approx. USD $103,000) worth of materials for fashioning gravestones, before demolishing the factory, the residences and the fami-lies’ animal shelters, according to Majd Ghaith from the Wadi Hilweh Information Center.

Israel Examines Remains Of 134 Palestinians Buried in “Numbers

Graveyard”

The communication came from the Israeli Military Counselor in Tel Aviv, informing the Committee that Israel started initial examinations of the list provided by the Legal Committee demanding the re-lease of the remains, so that they can be properly buried.

The Committee said that Israel will be conducting DNA tests for first-degree relatives of the slain Pal-estinians, in order to identify the remains within the coming months.

The Al-Quds Center said it had previously filed an appeal to the Israeli side, listing the names of 134 Palestinians, men and women, buried in numbered graves, demanding the release of their remains for proper burial.

The Committee said that Israel was still refraining from providing details on how many numbered graveyards it has, and the exact number of persons buried there, and that Tel Aviv is holding remains of slain Palestinians despite an order by Israel’s Supreme Court ordering the release of 38 persons by the end of December 2013.

It further expressed its rejection to the Israeli claims that the number of persons currently buried in num-bered graves is only 119, while the official list of names collected by the committee has indicated 220 persons, in addition to 42 yet to be identified names, and 65 persons presumed dead, but their remains were never located.

In its statement, the Committee said it is preparing for an extensive meeting with various groups and officials, to determine the next moves aiming at speeding the release of the remains of all slain persons by the end of 2015.

Jewish Organization to Begin Further Excavations under Al Aqsa

A right-wing Jewish organization called the Western Wall Heritage Foundation has circulated an invitation for bids to conduct excavations in tunnels under al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a top Palestinian official said on Sunday. Ahmad Qurei, a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said the work would begin on February 20th.

In a statement, Qurei, who chairs a PLO department for Jerusalem affairs, described the move as dangerous, Ma’an News Agency reports. He said that Israeli engineers and contractors had toured the al-Aqsa mosque compound secretly, a few days ago, to explore the location before submitting their bids.

Israel has already excavated dozens of tunnels under the Old City as part of its efforts to displace the indig-enous Palestinian residents and replace them with Jewish settlers, according to Qurei.

One of the tunnels, he says, runs from Ein Silwan to the western wall of al-Aqsa mosque. Another major tun-nel runs from the wall to the Omari school in the Muslim quarter. A third tunnel runs from the Muslim Quarter to the Western Wall of the mosque.

In addition, Qurei added that excavations are ongoing, in the attempt to connect between illegal settlement outposts in the Old City.

Whether advocating a one-state or a two-state “solution”, pundits rarely ever disclose the strategical factors behind such moves.
