Prefacee Need for the Present Edition

Almost as soon as the 2005 edition of the Robinson-Pierpont edi-tion of the Byzantine Textform appeared,1 various readers requestedspecific editions for various needs.e present edition fulfills the de-sired goal to provide an affordable Greek New Testament in flexiblebinding to support education and training in the original Greek. Ac-companied by a stable representation of the Greek text of the NewTestament according to its more dominant transmissional form, thisedition should be a valuable help for both abecedarian and advancedlearners.

e need for such an edition is obvious: currently availableeditions of the Greek New Testament either represent themostly Alexandrian-based critical text,2 the weaker and textuallydefective form of the Byzantine Textform found in the so-calledTextus Receptus type editions,3 the liturgically and predominantly

H. A. Scrivener, H KAINHDIAQHKH: e Greek Text underlying the English Authorized Version of 1611 (London:Trinitarian Bible Society, n. d. [1976; re-typeset without notes from the original edi-tion, Cambridge: University Press, 1881, 1894]). Whether in this or any other printedTextus Receptus type edition, many readings are printed in the main text that do notrepresent the dominant Byzantine consensus, nor even come close to such, but insteadreflect numerous minority and weakly supported readings, as well as some readingsthat have no actual Greek manuscript support, but instead are rendered into Greekfrom Latin-based sources (both manuscript and commentary).

lectionary-based form of the Byzantine Textform circulatedamong various Orthodox bodies,4 or editions based upon the lateand recensional K/fam group.5 ere simply was no small-sizeedition for popular use that accurately reflected the overall generalconsensus of Byzantine continuous-text manuscripts as previouslyprinted in the RP2005 or RP2010 format. e present edition nowfills that void in a manner that should be convenient for mostreaders as they seek to utilize such for study and ministry purposes.

Features of this Edition

e present format basically follows that of the 2005 edition:the main text represents either the clearly dominant Byzantineconsensus text or (when the Byzantine manuscripts are moreseriously divided) a general Byzantine consensus text; in the laercase, alternative Byzantine readings appear in an apparatus at thefoot of the page, where each alternative reading is denoted bya lower-case leer. Variant readings found in the Nestle-Aland27 and Nestle-Aland6 28 critical edition texts are displayed in afootnote apparatus where each variant is denoted by an Arabicnumeral. On pages which contain both apparatuses, the Byzantinealternate reading apparatus will appear first. In a very few instances

some marginal or otherwise divided Byzantine readings have beenincluded in the main text of this edition, and what previously hadbeen the main text in such cases is now relegated to the footnoteapparatus. Most readers will notice no difference in this regard.

It is hoped that this seminary edition of the Greek New Testamentaccording to its more dominant consensus-based form will be usefuland profitable to those who use it to proclaim the Gospel of our Lordand Savior Jesus Christ in fulfillment of his command that repen-tance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to allnations (Lk 24:47); that we should proclaim the gospel to the wholecreation (Mk 16:15); and that we should make disciples of all na-tions, teaching them to observe all things that I have commandedyou (Mt 28:20).
