Wisconsin Road Clean Upby Team Wenzel

The September Wisconsin Fish and Game Club roadside litter pick up had to be cancelled due to a personal schedule conflict we unexpectedly encountered. We will complete it at a later date. After several years as coordinators of the Wisconsin Adopt a highway cleanup effort, we are retiring. Lynn and Steve Klemann have volunteered to take over the spring and fall civic outreach. Watch the spring edition of the Fish and Game Club newsletter for announcements pertaining to next year’s schedule. We wish to thank Lynn and Steve for taking over and the volunteers that have assisted us in our past efforts to keep our assigned section of roadway clean! Greg and Mary Jo Wenzel

Thank You! Our hats go off to Chris Tews , Jim & Margie Marrs and Steve Kickert for bringing us the programs.

Two guys are out hunting deer. The first guy says, “Did you see that?”“No,” the second guy says. “Well, a bald eagle just flew overhead,” the first guy says. “Oh,” says the second guy.

A couple of minutes later, The first guy says, “Did you see that?”“See what?” the second guy asks. “Are you blind? There was a big, black bear walking on that hill, over there.”

“Oh.” A few minutes later the first guy says: “Did you see that?” By now, the second guy is getting aggravated, so he

says, “Yes, I did!” And the first guy says: “Then why did you step in it?”

Educational Grant Committeeby Kathleen Kuchevar

The committee received an interesting, detailed and appreciative report from Northland Pines High School teachers Amy Justice and Peter Aerts on their grant project to conduct an Aquatic Field Study. Quotes from them follow:“Our plan to give the students the opportunity and experience of real world application of water quality in the north woods was successful. The students all embraced the rainy day in the water; no one cared because we were in the water conducting tests. The day was filled with fantastic learning and growth. Even though many of these students have lived in the north woods their entire life, it wasn’t until that day in May that they really understood the importance of healthy waters. Our mid-May aquatic field study with Ecology and Advanced Chemistry students went extremely well. We started the day with a tour of the Eagle River Wastewater Treatment Plant. Wow, did that ever open the eyes of students as the manager explained the chemical and biological impacts people have on bodies of water more indirectly. At the headwaters of the Wisconsin River in Land O’ Lakes, the students became literally immersed in the biological and chemical testing. We could not pull them away from the water as they wanted to keep going with their tests and analysis. Our discussions about the results of our findings were in depth and led to an awareness of how we all impact our surface and ground waters. We tested pth water at the source and then again many miles downstream at County Hwy G. As expected the results had changed a bit and the students realized that stewardship of these precious resources is critical.Thank you again for the much needed chemistry kits along with the ability to have the students be bussed to the water testing sites so that they could conduct true field work. It is very important for students who live in such a water rich community to understand the dynamics that go on with these resources and the impact that the health of these waters have on the livelihood of our northern communities. We would like to thank you for the generous grant which allowed us to have this impacting experience with our students.”

The Board has approved a budget that provides for $3,135 to be spent during the 2017-2018 fiscal year that began July 1, 2017. This is $135 more than what was budgeted to be spent during the 2016-2017 fiscal year. The majority of the Club’s operating expenses for the 2017-2018 fiscal year will be for general membership meetings, administrative expenses, publicity, maintenance and fuel for the groomer for the cross country ski trail, the community photo contest, and memberships in 4 organizations

Memberships planned for the 2017-2018 fiscal year include affiliate memberships in the Land O’ Lakes and Phelps Chambers of Commerce; an affiliate membership in the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation; and membership in the Invasive Species Control Coalition of Watersmeet.

In October the Board will consider how much is to be made available from the Education Fund for educational grants for the 2017-2018 school year. For the 2016-2017 school year grants totaling $4,033 were paid to 11 teachers. The Educational Grant Committee will review the grant proposals submitted by educators in November and recommend those proposals that are to receive grants for the 2017-2018 school year.

As of September 15th, membership dues totaling $1,040 have been paid. Thanks to those members who have renewed or new members that have joined, we are 38 % on the way towards meeting the goal for revenue from membership dues for the 2017-2018 membership year. If you have not paid your membership dues, please take time to do so. A membership form is included with this newsletter for your use in remitting your dues.

OUTINGS STORIES

August 24 was a beautiful day for an agate hunt. Twenty-four people went to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and met Bob Wild, Interpreter at the Visitor Center. Bob took us to a beach on Lake Superior, gave us some instructions and sent us off to go agate hunting. Whenever we thought we found an agate, we would bring it to Bob and he would say “yea” or “nay”. If the answer was “nay”, he would tell us what we had (quartz, conglomerate, chert, etc.) Little by little we learned what to look for. After one hour, the group had found 7 agates! In addition, many fossils were found and also some beautiful pieces of banded jasper. When the outing ended, a few went home with a treasured agate; the rest went home with a pocket full of pretty rocks. After the agate hunt, each car went their separate way. My car went to Lake of the Clouds, a couple gift shops in Silver City and then on to Konteka Restaurant in White Pine. While eating dinner, we saw two big black bears come in to eat from their scrap pile. It was an exciting end to a beautiful day in the Porkies.

To celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of fall, Jim and Kathy Floriano and Mike and Dianne Brennand led an early September outing to Imp Lake in the Ottawa National Forest.Imp Lake is an 84 acre lake with a maximum depth of 86 ft. Anglers fish primarily for trout. The water is very clear and beautiful for canoeing or kayaking. The Imp Lake Trail (1.5 miles) threads its way through a hardwood-hemlock forest and a treed bog with occasional boardwalks, making a loop to return near its starting point. The trail was designed to be an easier walk for the first 0.8 mile. The remaining 0.7 mile is a footpath over terrain that is more difficult. It passes an overlook of Little Imp Lake and ends on a road south of the trailhead. The 31 folks in attendance started the beautiful cloudless day out kayaking, canoeing, hiking; and some just sat by the camp fire. After lunch S’mores were enjoyed by all, and one of the highlights of the day was being entertained by Steve Kickert and his medley of EXTREMELY INTERACTIVE hilarious camp songs. The perfect end to a perfect day. Special thanks goes out to Steve!
