THERMAL ENERGY

Thermal Energy• The internal motion of the atoms is

called thermal energy, because moving particles produce heat.

• Thermal energy can be produced by friction. (rubbing your hands together is an example)

• Thermal energy causes changes in temperature and phase of any form of matter. (causes melting, etc.)

• to keep warm (by heating structures and vehicles)

• To prepare food (both at home and commercially),

• to make zillions of products (manufacturing and industrial applications) such as melting plastic

• Thermal energy from the sun supports life on this planet.

The bowling ball has mechanical energy.

When the ball strikes the pins, mechanical energy is transferred to the pins!In other words, when the moving ball hits the pins, the pins move.

Energy that we can hear produced from air vibrations. Sound must travel through a medium (substance).
