SuperTarget™ facilitates the optimisation of the energy consumption of processes and utilities using Heat Inte-

gration via energy Pinch Analysis.

SuperTarget answers your key questions:• How much energy does my process use?• How much energy does it need to use?• Where are the inefficiencies in the design?• What improvements can be made?

MAIN FEATURES ModulesSuperTarget is comprised of three program modules – Proc-ess, Column, and Site.

Process• is the core program, used for energy optimi-sation in a single process unit or group of integrated process units: Targeting for defining energy use, utility cost, ex-

changer area, and capital cost – for New Design and Retrofit

Exchanger network design and retrofit using automated tools, flexible manual methods, and an interactive Grid Diagram (see Design Workbench graphic right)

Data sharing between multiple design or operating cases

Advanced topics, such as Exergy Analysis

Site• is used for Total Site heat and power targeting across a manufacturing site: Site-wide energy targets and cogeneration potential Optimal utility levels and usage across the site

Column• is used to modify the heat distribution in a distillation column: Use lower cost utilities or improved process integration Benefit from changing feed location, number of

stages, side-reboilers, or side-condensers (see Col-umn graphic left)

Energy Savings at a Glance SuperTarget can take data directly from Process Simula-tors, such as Petro-SIM™, the KBC plant-wide process simulation software packaage (see image page 2).

Rapid Design and Retrofit SuperTarget has automated tools for both grass roots and retrofit heat exchanger network design, which are backed up by multi-case data handling and continuous targeting throughout the design cycle.

TYPICAL PROJECTSSuperTarget has been used on a wide range of project types.

A few typical project categories are:• Users - Central engineering groups, site process engineers, contractors, consultants• Project Goals - Energy saving, CO2 reduction, debottlenecking, capital avoidance (for example, save energy rather than install a new furnace)• Industries and Processes - Oil refining (for example, CDU, VDU), Petrochemical (for example, BTX, Ethylene), Non-Petrochemical (for example, Pulp and Paper, Food and Drink)

EXPECTED BENEFITSA few of the typical benefits SuperTarget can provide are listed below. • Lower energy consumption (average of 10-35%)• Reduced CO2 emissions• Increased throughput (average of 10-20% - where

energy is the bottleneck)• Higher return on capital investment• Reduced load on cooling systemsThese benefits are realised through targeted capital invest-ment — identified using the many targeting and network design tools available in SuperTarget. Typical paybacks are 2-3 years, but payback time can be as low as 1 year for simple re-piping projects.

CASE STUDYThe Petro-SIM screenshot (upper right) shows a refinery at-mospheric distillation unit. When this data is transferred to SuperTarget Process, the targeting techniques of Pinch Anal-ysis calculate a potential to save 14.5 MW in the furnace (20%).

Of these, the first 6 MW are found automatically by Super-Target in a retrofit project involving one new exchanger and increased area on two others.

Further retrofit design proceeds in stages, producing alter-native designs with different levels of savings and invest-ment. One alternative increases the savings to 10.4 MW, at a total cost of three new exchangers and two with increased area. After that, diminishing returns make it impractical to save more in the retrofit case.
