Energy STARS 2016 Working for a BRIGHTER Future. Literally . Bosque School - Albuquerque, New Mexico Project Advisors: Barbara Lazar, Kari Daniels, Robert Lazar Student Leaders: Mary Gerhart, Finn Hautau, Marisa Landon, Abella Wayne, Luke Ruybal, Tyler Carpenter, Allison McGuire, Annie EllioK, Anna Shibuya, Ezra Duree, Eyob Lubin, Myles Allen, Isabella Pino, Gus Pentecost, Autumn Ochs, Sophia Sanchez The Energy STARS reconvened as an extracurricular club to deepen our knowledge about energy conservaPon and awareness, and our environmental impact throughout our school and community. We met to explore, experiment, communicate, and have fun doing energy. We followed the steps in Blueprint for Success to organize our work. Our goal is to educate ourselves, other students and our community about how to save energy and reduce our energy footprint. We learned through different acPviPes, outreach, and demonstraPons. To deepen our understanding and awareness, and develop leadership, we: Learned about forms and sources through hands-on acPviPes and kits like Science of Energy ParPcipated in NEED Building Buddies Training Learned, then taught about energy conservaPon and efficiency Toured an electric power plant Used the Energy on the Move – energy trailer and energy bike Our school’s awareness improved, because of: Announcements of facts, Pps, jokes, and challenges, about conservaPon and efficiency Pledges made by students to save energy and resources Our energy club grew in student parPcipaPon We are learning about and supporPng new resource-saving at our school Two Energy Weeks improved a culture of energy awareness with students and staff Our community benefited: Making use of local resources and field trips ParPcipated in New Mexico MESA Day The influence of our club made a difference on how people think and the choices they make about energy. E-Recycling Event resulted in 5,780 pounds of E-Waste Through our acPviPes and visibility in the community, we have shown that our work as Energy STARS has been sustainable, and we have helped the school and community to beKer understand our world, its natural resources, and energy as it impacts our lives today.

TUESDAY

Autumn Today’s ENERGY WEEK ANNOUNCEMENTS will inform, delight, and

challenge you to lower our ENVIONMENTAL IMPACT – or CARBON

FOOTPRINT

Mary What is a CARBON FOOTPRINT? It is "the total set of greenhouse gas emissions

caused by an [individual, event, organisation, or product] expressed as CO2e." ---

basically this relates to the amount of electricity and energy we use that produce

carbon emissions from fossil fuels. (phew!)

Isabella So, first we’d like to share with you some of the things we are doing to be energy

efficient and lower our school’s carbon footprint here at Bosque:

Did you know we have a solar water heater on the Schoolhouse Building??

Myles And did you know that much of our outdoor lighting AND the water pump on our

pond are solar-powered?

Autumn And we also have automatic light-timer switches all around campus!

Mary One thing we ALL can do is KEEP THE DOORS CLOSED as a way to keep the

heating/cooling systems working efficiently!

Autumn Bosque School used 650, 000 kilowatt hours this past year! What can YOU DO

to lower our enviornmental impact!

Isabella Today’s energy challenge is: to use low or no heating or cooling - So here’s the

Energy tip:

- Adjust the thermostat temperature a couple degrees to save 5% - 20 % of

your energy costs

- AND remember to keep our doors closed.

Myles And, now we have a joke of the day for you:

Mary Did you hear that Mr. Etigson wanted to plant a lightbulb?

Autumn Really?! Why???

Mary He wanted to grow a POWER plant!!

Isabella The Energy STARS will be out at lunch today helping you sign the energy pledge

and take the Energy Conservation Challenge. TODAY you can pick up a puzzle

sheet AND an ENERGY PENCIL and learn a bit about energy and conservation.
