Once on site, a quick substation testing procedure can be implemented to ensure the integrity of the substation before connectivity. Connection is made easy using the on-board cable reel with appropriate terminations.

The mobile substations for Power and Water Corporation have been fitted out with 22kV, 630A, 31.5kA/3s WSA switchgear as well as MiCOM 120, 121 protection relays and miniature circuit breakers. A MiCOM C434 modular bay control unit has also been installed in the substations. The C434 is designed for the control and monitoring of up to 24 electrically operated switchgear units equipped with electrical checkback signalling. During operation, the user-friendly interface promotes safe operation of the substation by preventing non-permissible switching operations.

Power and Water Corporation is using one of the mobile substations, which they have called ‘Nomad B’, to support existing substations in the Darwin and rural areas to Pine Creek. Equipped with integrated onboard communication technology, this substation can be controlled and monitored by a remote operator. The first

assignment of Nomad B was at Humpty Doo Zone Substation while maintenance was carried out. Operating as desired, the use of the mobile substation allowed maintenance work to be completed without causing power disruption to customers in the area.

The mobile substations were joined by a mobile switch room from Schneider Electric late in 2012. This further improved Power and Water Corporation’s contingency ability and network resilience.

Conclusion Schneider Electric’s NOMAD mobile substations are a solution that has allowed Power and Water Corporation to reduce costs and improve electricity supply to their customers. The solution mitigates the risk in both maintenance and emergency situations.

“The Schneider Electric NOMAD mobile substations have provided us greater capability and flexibility to carry out essential maintenance on our existing substations,” Bertram Birk, Power and Water’s General Manager Power Networks said. “These units allow us to completely bypass affected areas, meaning our customers can continue to receive an uninterrupted supply of electricity while works are being carried out.” Wendy Minne, Vice President Schneider Electric Energy Business Unit is pleased the products are performing well.

“Our NOMAD mobile substations highlight Schneider Electric’s ability to provide complete integrated solutions for our customers,” Wendy said.

“With our extensive product range, engineering base, project management experience and synergistic capabilities, we can provide our clients with a solution to their business problems. In line with this, the company is undertaking a number of major upgrades to improve the capacity and reliability of the Warriewood Sewage Treatment Plant. Through Transfield Services, Sydney Water has chosen Schneider Electric to design, manufacture, supply and install new switchgear for the project. A number of requirements were specified for the project, including the use of environmentally safe products, connectivity to the existing SCADA system and safety features for those using the system. Schneider Electric was able to fulfill all of these aspects and come up with a complete integrated solution.

Switchgear Upgrade for Better Monitoring and MeasurementWhile Transfield Services, leading providers of asset services, was upgrading other areas of the Warriewood Sewage Treatment Plant, it was noted that the 11kV high voltage switchboard was in need of replacement. Transfield Services contacted Schneider Electric to supply new product, which would increase the safety and reliability of the switchgear. With their extensive product range, engineering base, project management experience and synergistic capabilities, Schneider Electric was well positioned to meet these replacement needs. Schneider Electric contracted out the building of the prefabricated switchroom to switchroom builder Independent Portable Buildings. Meeting the requirements of Sydney Water, the 11KV switchboard has protection on four sides to withstand

internal arc faults of 25kA for 1 second. If a fault does occur, VAMP relays (a company of Schneider Electric) detect the danger and isolate the fault quickly. This restricts the damage, as well as helping to ensure the outage time is minimised.Offering maximum user safety, a Schneider Electric MCset indoor switchgear assembly was chosen for the project. The switchgear meets all electrical distribution needs up to 17.5kV and incorporates a set of innovative solutions including digital protection and control systems. The MCset switchgear is designed to operate with SF6 gas insulated circuit breakers or vacuum circuit breakers. In this instance, Schneider Electric’s Evolis vacuum circuit breakers were specified for the project. They have a long service life and do not use Sulphur Hexaflouride (SF6) which, if improperly disposed of, can have an environmental impact. Schneider Electric 1500KVA Oil Filled Transformers are used to step the power down from 11kV to 433V. This is a very reliable system with a high electrical conductivity. MiCOM P341 and Sepam T40 protection relays are used to provide flexible and reliable power protection for the system. An ION 7650

Providing a SolutionEquipment within Schneider Electric E-Houses, transforms and switches sequentially to ensure maximum power availability to the network to maintain a controlled electrical system environment for the automated systems powering the plant.“Schneider Electric is providing IEC standard distribution products including low and high voltage switchboards, distribution transformers and prefabricated substations. Most of this equipment is being built off-site, including processing modules - some of which are 30 metres high and almost cover the same area as a football pitch,” Robert Bagnall said. Nine prefabricated Schneider Electric buildings, measuring between 17 and 25 meters long by 6 metres wide, have been supplied to power the village electrical distribution network. The substations have been constructed with glass reinforced concrete. This material provides internal

arc protection, impact resistance and high protection resistance against solar radiation. The substations feature Schneider Electric HVAC, fire and gas detection, fire suppression, safety equipment, small light and power, data concentrator, integration and fit-out of the buildings; including free-issued variable speed drives (VSDs) to bring generators up to speed and therefore save energy. The substations have also been fitted with power management systems to allow the client to keep track of their energy usage. For the LNG plant, Schneider Electric has been commissioned to supply 30 prefabricated buildings. These are between 22 and 28 metres long and are 7 metres wide. The buildings feature Schneider Electric and third party equipment such as HVAC, fire and gas detection, fire suppression, safety equipment and facilities for small light and power outlets. As well as reducing the environmental impact by cutting back the on-site work required, the technology within the substation allows Schneider Electric to offer a compact footprint; a design which promotes hazard reduction, complete automation of the equipment supplied and compliance to local codes and standards. Protection, control and interlocking system designs were customised specifically for the project, and Schneider Electric Power Management System solutions have been installed to ensure the LNG plant has continual functionality. Integrating with the Schneider Electric hardware is a Schneider Electric PACiS Automation system. The system is designed to retrieve information from the field. The PACiS Operator Interface provides The Gorgon Joint Venture operators with access to information such as the rate of flow, which areas are in operation at particular times, as well as providing alerts when a problem occurs. The products were all part of a solution which was specifically designed for the Gorgon Project.

Because of this we would urge you to recycle this catalogue into your most convenient recycling method when you have finished using it and contribute to the ongoing recovery efforts of the paper industry.
