Livingstone Bangi, Managing Director Problem Statement: More than 60% of the households and small businesses in range of the Ugandan electrical grid require less than 15 KWh of electric- ity per month and can have their needs met by the government’s lifeline tariff of $1.50 per month, instead of spending $32/month on kerosene. However, to take advantage of these savings, they must pay $200 in connection fees and $650 in wiring and fixtures costs to meet government regulations. This traps people in using kerosene which causes harmful indoor air pollution and fires. Theory of Change: By providing an affordable way for people to replace kerosene lamps with electrical lighting kits, Energy Plus enables people to save money, improve illumination, and reduce health hazards. “Before we installed the panel and battery system, we had to rely on a diesel generator during power outages. Now we no longer need the generator, we spend one-third as much money on electricity, and have fewer disruptions.” -- Brother Edward Bukenya, St. Mary’s College, Uganda
