Understanding Investments

How property works

Commercial property is investing inbuildings used by businesses, such asoffices, shopping centres and factories.

When you buy a property, your income is in the form of regular rent. Commercial leases tend to last a long time and commercial tenants are more reliable.

There is also the potential for capital growth when you eventually sell your property.

The investors become shareholders, partial owners of the company. They get a percentage share in its profits and losses and get to vote on how the company is run.

A company can raise money to invest or expand by splitting its ownership into shares (also known as equities) and selling them to investors.

How equities work

Capital growthYou’ll make money if you sell your shares at

a higher price than you bought them.

Income: receive dividendsThe company decides how much profit to pay

in dividends and how much to reinvest.

A bond is basically a loan. When you buy a bond, you lend money to the government or company that issued it and they pay you interest.

After buying a bond, you don’t have to hold onto it until the end date. Just as shares can be bought and sold on the stock market, so can bonds.

How bonds work

At the time when the loan is scheduled to end (the maturity), the amount you originally lent is paid back to you.

Cash offers very little potential

for growth or income. However, it can be the most secure place for your money

as the Financial Services Compensation Scheme will pay compensation up to £85000 if your

bank or building society becomes insolvent.

Bonds may be appealing if you need a regular income or

are just looking for a lower-risk place to store

your savings that still has more growth potential

than cash.

Equities can be right for you if you are comfortable with the

idea that the potential for strong growth also comes

with the possibility for greater losses.

Property offers an attractive

combination of a regular income and some

potential for growth, particularly if you invest

in a fund that buys property directly.

The value of investments will fluctuate, which will cause prices to fall aswell as rise and you may not get back the original amount you invested.

What is Investment Management?Investment management plays a meaningful role in today’s society and financial system. Investment managers help grow clients’ money over the long-term in order to provide stable and reliable returns.

Clients could be classed as institutional such as pension funds of major international companies, insurance companies etc. Retail clients could be individually investing through ISA products or private bankers/wealth managers acting on behalf of individuals.

At M&G our investment managers follow their own strategies, ideas and convictions, which provide diversity of thought, fostering a rich breeding ground for discussion and internal challenge.

At M&G we not only manage external client money, we invest our own capital in our funds, creating a more compelling investment proposition for our clients.

Investment Management can offer you exciting and challenging job prospects, whilst providing you with a dynamic and rewarding career.

‘Responsible investment’ can mean different things to different people. Taking a long-term approach, acting as stewards of our clients’ assets and considering environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors are at the heart of M&G’s investment processes. We believe in the importance of sustainable investment to support our clients’ long-term goals, and that investing responsibly is vital for the long-term stability of the market and the health of the broader economy.

At M&G we take our responsibility as investors seriously. Our investment teams are deeply aware of their duties towards our clients, and consider the range of factors that can influence investment performance. Alongside traditional financial factors, ESG issues are incorporated into investment decisions where they may have a meaningful impact. Examples of ESG issues include pollution and waste, health and safety, human rights and executive remuneration. We believe these, and many other issues, can be as important as analysing the balance sheet in determining sustainable success for companies. We focus on the issues that we consider most relevant to the company or industry in question.

Responsible Investing

Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association

Page 13: Energy, Originality, Conviction: Kick-start your career at M&G · Recruiting and retaining talent is vital to continuing success. Investing in your development is just the beginning

We apply this approach across all asset classes. In Equities, we have a long history of active share ownership and consider ESG issues in our interactions with companies, via engaging with management and voting on company resolutions. These activities are overseen by our Corporate Finance & Stewardship department, who work closely with our investment teams to support companies in managing their risks and improving their performance on a variety of ESG issues.

For Fixed Income, we believe that integrating ESG issues into our investment process helps us to better understand downside risk for our bond investments. We have also provided financing for a range of socially and environmentally beneficial investments in areas including affordable housing, education, green property developments and renewable energy.

Our Real Estate business has long been regarded as a pioneer in responsible investment. We believe that by adopting a sector-leading approach to responsible property investment, we can respond to the growing range of environmental and social issues that can impact property values. We feel that this helps us protect and improve fund and asset performance for our clients.

At M&G, we believe that responsible investment makes compelling investment sense, as well as simply being the right thing to do. It is an area our clients, and society more broadly, are increasingly focused on – we see it as our responsibility to live up to these expectations.

M&G Life

At M&G diversity of thought is a key factor to our continued success. We achieve this by recruiting a diverse range of people. From a graduate, intern and apprentice perspective, this is evidenced by the variety of universities, schools, degree disciplines and backgrounds of our cohorts. In short, the subject of your degree or A levels are not important in our assessment process, we encourage difference.

We support and collaborate with several organisations who aim to address under-represented groups in the workplace. In 2014 we launched M&G Pride and Pride Allies, our LGBT networks, whose objective is to foster a supportive environment enabling all employees to bring their full selves to work. We also support Citymothers and Cityfathers who help working parents balance family life and their career.

The Prudential Women’s Network (PWN), is a volunteer-led organisation. The network aims to inspire, support and develop women to achieve their potential at Prudential. Over the last year, a range of events, talks and seminars have been held, allowing the network to support colleagues with career development and make connections with other diversity groups both internally and externally.

M&G Mind Matters is an employee network run by and for staff. The aim of the network is to increase awareness and knowledge around mental health, reduce stigma associated with mental health at work and support the organisation towards the delivery of industry leading systems and processes for those who are direct or indirectly affected by mental health issues.

“Our role as your employer is very simple – to provide the right environment for talented people to do their best work. We respect and value your individual differences.”

We encourage everyone at M&G to play their part in creating a climate for enterprise, prosperity and the improved well-being of the community.

We are actively involved in supporting community life as well as making donations to a wide variety of charities. M&G seeks to help disadvantaged communities which are local to its operations and we take a special interest in:

• Education

• Welfare

• Youth projects

• Environment

• Provision of medical care and equipment

We encourage this from day one. Our graduates and apprentices participate annually in volunteer projects, giving back for the benefit of the local community and our employees.

M&G Life

We set up a Staff Charity Fund in 1992 to support smaller charities that would otherwise struggle to achieve funding or are connected to M&G staff or its local offices.

The Fund is financed solely through the generosity of M&G staff who make monthly donations through the Give As You Earn scheme.

M&G supports over 250 charities each year and we aim to be earnestly involved in all projects. We also support the charities close to the hearts of our employees, making generous matching donations to employees fundraising efforts.

In the last reporting year, M&G’s charitable donations totalled approximately £750,000. Below are just some examples of the organisations we have supported over recent years.

“What makes the Staff Charity Fund so special is that it brings us together to make a difference to our communities. Many of our staff have close personal connections to the charities we help, and it’s a great feeling to know that their colleagues are supporting them.”

When we ask our employees what makes them want to work for M&G, there is one word that is repeated: “culture”.

People are at the heart of our organisation. We foster an environment where people from wide-ranging backgrounds flourish through the right combination of challenge, support and continual learning. This enables them to grow to their full potential while enjoying a rewarding career with M&G.

M&G fosters a collaborative working environment which is further developed outside of the office through social events, team sports and team away days. Energy, enthusiasm and passion are inherent in our culture and people with these attributes thrive at M&G.

“The culture here is truly unique. Everyone, regardless of rank or seniority, is extremely approachable.”

At M&G we recognise the importance of each employee reaching their full potential, both personally and professionally.

We support our employees through a variety of Learning and Talent Development opportunities tailored to the specific needs of the individual. These not only broaden people’s understandings of investment management but also help them to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle. This includes:

• Professional qualifications

• Technical training

• Soft skill development

• Mentoring and coaching

• Business/fund awareness sessions

• Online training modules

• Wellbeing workshops

To ensure our future leaders are well equipped to accelerate their career development we offer several targeted development schemes focusing on management and leadership.

There are also substantial opportunities for mobility within the business: many employees undertake secondments in different business areas across M&G and the Prudential Group to broaden their knowledge and further development their skills.

The graduate, intern and apprenticeship programmes provide the opportunity for exposure across the business. We believe this builds well-rounded knowledge, strong and wide networks and is the catalyst to a dynamic career at M&G.

Our approach to work-life balance is another commonly voiced reason why people enjoy working here. This includes our approach to working hours, the social aspects and our family friendly policies.

We are a company that will grow with you and encourage the evolution of your career as your life develops.

Being a member of a valued cohort you will undergo work that is both meaningful and relevant. With direct access to senior management and clients you are able to develop good relationships across the business and begin to build your own platforms to a successful and long lasting career.

Training and SupportAll graduates will undergo a robust training programme which includes technical qualifications (IMC) before entering the business as well as further development initiatives throughout the scheme. This will give you the knowledge required and prepare you for a long-lasting career in investment management.

As a graduate at M&G every day is different, you are constantly learning and developing your own skills. Dependant on the programme you join you will rotate around various business areas or within your department. This allows you to get a taste for a number of areas, build networks and inform your future career decisions.

What we are looking forIn our graduate, intern and placement students we are looking for people who demonstrate energy, originality and conviction with a passion that relates to their chosen scheme; be that business, technology or financial markets. Confidence in your own abilities and decision making is important and we look for those who can utilise this within a team.

We seek people from multiple degree disciplines; a finance-related degree is not necessary for a career in investment management. We have an eye on the future and are interested in your skill base rather than your current knowledge base. We can teach you all you need to know.

Life as a Graduate at M&G

“Although studying geography is not the traditional route to working in finance, it has given me a different perspective and way of thinking which I feel has been truly valued at M&G. The entire graduate cohort undergoes a five week training programme which has quickly brought me up to speed with all the relevant industry knowledge.”

Charlotte Thompson – Investment Graduate

Whatever your interest, there is place for you to grow here.

From day one you are given the opportunity to take on real work and really make an impact. Our summer internships and placements are designed to develop your skills and interests through an inclusive training programme and on-the-job guidance.

What to expectYou will spend your summer (or 6/12 months for placement students) in a chosen business area where you will be given opportunities to make an active contribution to the team whilst gaining an insight into what life at M&G is really like.

During your first few weeks you will go through a comprehensive training programme which has been specifically designed for those with and without industry knowledge. Alongside this you will have additional guidance from your buddy, mentor and team throughout your internship.

There are also plenty of opportunities to join internship social events throughout the programme. Networking lunches, evening-drinks and fun events, along with other team specific socials generally keep our students very busy!

We expect our interns to get involved in M&G life from the beginning, be that supporting volunteering projects, participation in our inclusive networks, active team involvement or fundraising for a supported charity.

From Intern to GraduateAs an intern you will go through the same recruitment process as a graduate as we see you as graduate pipeline. If you are successful over your internship we will fast track you for our graduate scheme to start the following year.
