Wade Bailey, National Operations Manager, EPSA, approached NetComm Wireless for a reliable and robust mobile broadband device capable of meeting the stringent demands and harsh operating conditions of temporary power solutions. The 6000 series, an industrial-grade wireless Machine-to-Machine (M2M) device, was chosen to remotely manage and control mobile generators in real time from any laptop or computer over a 3G network.

“With the addition of NetComm Wireless routers we are able to continually monitor multiple generators in locations all over Australia from a single PC. This lets us monitor usage and remotely troubleshoot issues for customers the instant something happens, while also enabling us to obtain data for scheduled servicing. With the 6000 series we can easily monitor the number of hours a generator has run, and keep watch of fuel levels and engine parameters from a laptop at the office,” said Wade.

Following a simple setup and installation process, EPSA is reducing its operational and maintenance costs with live access to data concerning each generators operating condition as well as continuous information from the system controller for generator usage data, alarm history and predictive maintenance reminders. This gives EPSA the ability to: charge customers based on total running-hours; schedule servicing to reduce the level of spare parts stock held at any one time and significantly reduce the number of refuelling trips to the generator site.

The 6000 series also sends alarms and periodic reports to smart phone and PC software. If an alarm occurs, EPSA is instantly aware and can immediately send out a call to the customer’s phone or email. They can then establish a link to remotely diagnose the problem and modify generator configurations and parameters as needed. If required, EPSA can dispatch a service truck with the necessary parts to quickly correct the problem, thereby minimising downtime.

Wade said he has used NetComm Wireless’ 3G modems in a previous role and found them to be extremely reliable and easy to use, offering an excellent feature set including facilities such as GPS tracking which is ideal for keeping an eye generators in real-time.

“The Australian transport, marine and industrial sectors operate in some of the world’s most demanding conditions, so we needed a router that would stand up to these kinds of tough environments. We also needed something that was setup and forget, with no maintenance. NetComm Wireless’ modems fit the bill.”
