There is a lot of discussion around “greening commodities” and customer interest in the carbon intensity of raw materials - how real is this, and which commodities need to respond?

How should mining companies - both majors and smaller producers - position themselves in this environment to respond appropriately and maintain shareholder value?Carbon reduction is ranked among the top five risks facing

mining and metals companies, according to global consultancy EY. Increased stakeholder interest in climate risk combined with heightened public concern over mining’s carbon footprint, and more severe and catastrophic events like the bushfire disaster have pushed climate action to the top of mining’s agenda. Doubling as an Energy Insiders Podcast hosted by Renew Economy, this session will look at how these developments, and the urgency for climate action, is impacting mining.

AGENDA DAY 2: JUNE 25, 2020

How can you ensure that the project is set up right from the start?

How do you get an accurate picture of what is realistically achievable on a site?

Do you need to do a detailed feasibility study before going to tender - or just a high-level concept study?

Renewable energy for mines is ramping up quickly in Australia with most diesel and gas-reliant mines considering renewable energy. To ensure the market reaches its full potential, it’s important to develop procurement models that consider the objectives of both mining and independent power producers. Walking through the lifespan of a project, this session will provide insight from mining and renewables experts on key considerations at each stage.

Stage 1 - Pre-Feasibility Expression of Interest

1:00 Session 8: What is the Best Procurement Model for Renewables for Mines?

What should go into a commercial tender to ensure the best results - should it detail the type of power under consideration or just the site’s load requirements and variability, for instance?

What lessons can be gained from previous tenders in terms of what to do and what not to do?

How can mines filter out the best supply options to ensure reliability, flexibility and value for money?

What are the contractual elements to consider for both parties - how much risk can be passed onto the IPP?

Stage 2 - Tendering and Contracting

What are the key issues for project proponents and IPPs to consider at the construction stage?

What questions need to be addressed upfront about operation and maintenance?

Stage 3 - Construction through to Operation

1:40 Interactive Q&A with Audience

1:50 Session 9: Decarbonizing Material Movement - Towards Zero-Emissions Mine FleetsAlongside mining’s transition away from carbon-intensive operational energy choices, the movement to decarbonize material movement is ramping up. With diesel from trucks accounting for a high proportion of mining’s carbon footprint and energy use, it’s essential to move away from diesel-powered fleets in order to meet the ambitious carbon and energy goals that operators have set. This session will explore the options and next steps for realizing zero-emissions mine fleets.
