These Girls went Back to Netball!

On Wednesday 16th March, over 50 ladies from local workplaces took part in a Back to Netball taster session, as part of the local workplace health initiative, Workplace Challenge. The two hour netball event was organised in partnership between local County Sports Partnership, Energize, Shropshire’s Netball Development Officer, Zoe Stephenson, and Phoenix Sports & Leisure Centre, where the event was held. The ladies who took part were from Wrekin Housing Trust, Telford & Wrekin Council, Madeley Nursery, Princess Royal Hospital, Southall School, plus others. One lady who attended commented: “Would just like to say thank you to everyone who organised last night. It was the first time I have played in over 40 years and was apprehensive at start but really loved it. If given the opportunity would definitely like to do this again. I am 58 and this was a real challenge to me but I so enjoyed it.”

Energize received a great response to this netball event, and will be working with Shropshire’s NDO to provide similar events in the future which will be informed by participant’s feedback. Back to Netball provides women of all ages with a gentle reintroduction of the sport, starting with the basics of game play and finishing with friendly games. Many Back to Netball sessions take place across the County http://www.englandnetball.co.uk/my-game/back-to-netball. The event was part of the Workplace Challenge (www.workplacechallenge.org.uk ), participants could sign up as individuals or as part of a team with colleagues. Energize co-ordinate the Workplace Challenge, which is free to for individuals to sign up to if you work for an organisation in the County. This enables access to an activity tracker, event directory and workplace competitions which are co-ordinated by Energize.

CSPs: Past, present and future

The first generation of CSPs was established around 2000 as Active Sports Partnerships, characterised as programme deliverers with a partnership approach and young people focus. Around 2005 the second generation of CSPs were formed, principally with a business to business focus, known for facilitating delivery and partnerships 'behind the scenes', supporting Sport England, NGBs & others to deliver their plans, programmes and targets. Over the last 10 years, CSPs have become embedded as a core element of the sport and physical activity landscape and have matured as organisations, many of which are incorporated and all of which have strong governance, accountability and performance management. The CSP network now has a good track record as an efficient and reliable delivery network, and continues to grow its impact and sustainability and drive improvement through its ‘Good to Great’ mission. Whilst results and impact continue to grow, the County Sports Partnership Network recognises that there is significant change taking place within its operating environment, and so it needs to change in order to meet the changing needs of customers, communities and stakeholders respectively.

A 2-day convention was organised on the 14-15 March in Nottingham to tackle these themes where 350 delegates attended from CSPs and stakeholders. In addition to some outstanding key note deliveries, there was an extensive programme of high quality clinics and workshops covering themes such as customer centricity, insight-led strategies, getting active outdoors, essentials of governance and leadership through change. The event also included the Good to Great Impact awards hosted by Chris Jones the CEO of England Athletics that recognised the impact that CSPs are having in driving local outcomes. Further details can be found at www.cspnetwork.org/impact. Chris Child, chief executive of Energize, said “I welcome the new era for grass roots sport and County Sports Partnerships which has been heralded by the new Government strategy for an Active Nation. I think Energize and our partners are really well placed to make an even bigger contribution and the CSPN convention this year introduced a number of areas for us to explore in coming months. Watch this space for more opportunities to get involved.”

‘Enormous role’ for gyms in Sports Strategy, says Sport England CEO Health clubs and fitness operators have an “enormous role to play” in helping to achieve the physical activity goals set out in the government’s recent Sports Strategy, according to Sport England CEO Jennie Price. Describe by Price as the government’s “first thinking from scratch piece for a long time”, the strategy’s objectives will largely fall under the responsibility of her organisation, which is currently piecing together its own strategy in response to the new remit. Price said the “sheer number of people” that use health clubs means they reach a greater proportion of the population than anyone else, aided by their non-gender specific offering which is open to a broad range of demographics. Tesco Bags of Help projects On 5 October 2015 carrier bag charging began in England, bringing it in-line with carrier bag charging schemes already in place in the rest of the UK. As a result, Tesco, like other large retailers, is required by law to charge a minimum of 5p for every single-use carrier bag used by a customer. Proceeds generated from the sales of the bags will be given to good causes. The money raised by Tesco customers will be used to pay for a large number of local projects to improve green spaces in communities across England, Wales and Scotland. Projects that will get the green light as a result of the funding will include building new pocket parks, sports facilities, woodland walks and community gardens. The first funding round of the programme closed in December 2015. The next round will open in April 2016. Find out what projects have been supported with Bags of Help grants near you just click here. Clubs make it their business to raise their game Let’s Raise Our Game, the England Golf training and education programme for clubs, has launched with a hugely successful series of Business Growth Forums. More than 1500 delegates from 600 golf clubs – almost a third of all those in England - signed up to attend the 24 forums, which were held across the country. Now, all clubs have the opportunity to attend demand-led practical workshops, which are being organised over the next few months. These will cover topics highlighted by clubs during the forums, including marketing, customer service, revenue generation, recruitment and retention of members. These workshops will be open to all clubs, not only those which attended the forums, but places will be limited. More information is available on the Training and Education page of the England Golf website or by visiting the Golf Education Calendar .

After hugely successful Go Spike Big Weekend…. 2015 events saw more than 3000 people take part in more than 80 volleyball sessions, this year we are looking to go even bigger and better. “The Go Spike Big Weekends give clubs and facilities the opportunity to put on their own ‘Come and Try it’ events,” said Sam Harding, Adult Participation Manager. “They can include sitting, indoor, beach, grass or a combinations or creation of your own. “We’d just love you to show your local community what great fun volleyball is and what a fun and friendly place your club is.” The Big Weekends will be held over the May Bank Holiday weekend (28-30 May) and the August Bank Holiday weekend (27-29 August). Hosting events is a great way to promote your club and is proven to help increase members, supporters and volunteers. You can tailor your events to suit you and they can last a couple of hours, a full day or the whole weekend. Volleyball England will provide each event organiser with a free pack which includes a wealth of resources to help you to promote your event, such as posters, banners, flyers, a press pack and more. Each event will also be promoted through the Go Spike and Volleyball England websites and social media channels. Whether you’re a regular Big Weekender or you fancy running one for the first time, visit the Go Spike Big Weekend webpages to find out how you can be involved.
