Highlight on an Energize Champion Mel Clarke

Mel has been involved in archery for many years, and competed internationally for GB since 2002, in which time she has been club, county, national, regional, European and world champion, having shot numerous world records, and competed in 2 paralympics - winning a bronze medal in Beijing 2008 and a silver in London 2012. In 2003 whilst competing on an able bodied team for GB in the world championships, Mel was taken ill with Lyme disease and not expected to survive. When she woke from this she found she was paraplegic, had lost most of my hearing and the sight in her shooting eye. She was told she wouldn’t be able to shoot again….however two years later with lots of perseverance and hard work she won the world championships! Beijing was her first Paralympics and she was proud to win a bronze medal and delighted to compete on home soil and win a silver in London in a very tight match, coming down to the final arrow to decide between gold and silver against Danielle Brown MBE. Mel’s assistance with the Energize Champion Programme has been outstanding. Since joining the programme she has visited schools, the Shropshire Homes School Games and will be attending our Women Make Sport conference in October. At each visit, she is an exemplary ambassador for paralympic sport and for what you can achieve if you are focussed, determined and passionate whether that is in sports or any other interest. If you would like to receive a visit from Mel, Danielle, or any of our other Energize Champions, please contact: [email protected]. Or visit the Energize web-site for more details.

Consultation paper on a new sport strategy

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has launched a consultation document giving interested groups an opportunity to voice their opinions on what can be done to encourage participation in sport. Following a decline in sport participation since October 2012, the paper highlights key themes that need to be addressed in the formation of a new sport strategy. Some of the key themes for consideration are physical activity, children and young people, participation and infrastructure. A nine week consultation will close on Friday 2nd October. Read more

Chelmarsh Sailing Club is helping to lead a small boat racing revolution after being awarded a £10,000 Sport England Small Grant to invest in two brand new cutting-edge RS Aero boats.

The ultra-light weight RS Aero dinghy has only been in production for six months but Chelmarsh has embraced the boat for what it sees as the future of one-person sailing and keeping people excited about racing, helping foster a lifelong love of the sport. View the full news item

Shropshire club has invested in two RS Aeros thanks to Sport

England grant

Robert Fisk-Moore is the only founder member of Chelmarsh still sailing at the club ; “This is a major development. In my 50 years at the club I don’t think we’ve ever had a boat take off like the Aero. There are already 12-13 privately owned Aeros at Chelmarsh, but we wanted to give even more people the chance to experience the thrill of sailing these boats, which is why we wanted to buy two. “When you are competing for people, and especially youngsters’, attention with so many other things there has to be a ‘WOW’ factor. These boats are very fast, light, easy to sail, modern and instantly give people a buzz some older, more traditional and technical boats maybe don’t. We want to attract people to adopt sailing as a lifelong pursuit and are confident these Aeros can help us do that.”

Latest News & Updates

A new report published by the Centre for Workforce Intelligence and the Royal Society for Public Health has found that the 225,000 people who work within the sport and fitness sector are active or interested in engaging with public health. The report highlights how these types of jobs contribute towards improving people’s health through improving their diet, weight or levels of physical activity, as well as through helping to reduce someone’s chances of premature mortality and improving their mental health.

The report also features a case study about the Workplace Challenge, created by the County Sports Partnership Network. The Workplace Challenge, recognising that adults spend 60% of their waking hours at work, aims to increase physical activity levels of staff through a range of products and services specifically designed for the workplace. The results have so far indicated an increase in participation of inactive people who took part in the challenge. Source of information
