COMPILED BY ATTORNEY J. ERIC KINDBERG

AVOID UNNECESSARY EXPENSESYou decide who is going to be executor of your estate or a court will appoint a person to step in to settle your affairs.

YOUR MARITAL STATUS CHANGESMarriage, the loss of a spouse, and other changes can impact your current and future financial plans. Your will and other plans (life insurance policies, bank accounts etc) should reflect these changes.

THE NEEDS OF YOUR LOVE ONES CHANGEDoes your spouse need long term care? Has a child become disabled?

MOVE BETWEEN STATESNorth Carolina and South Carolina have different laws of real estate survivorship.

A CHILD OR GRANDCHILD IS BORNAn addition to the family may also have an impact on the terms of your will.

Because of your friendship and partnership with Charlotte Rescue Mission, I am sending you our Planned Giving Newsletter, which provides information on current gift and estate planning. I trust you will find this helpful as you consider strategies to extend your witness into the future while minimizing taxes.

If you don’t have an estate plan, the State will distribute assets according to their formula. This means that treasured mementos may not go to the persons you intended, important people in your life may be overlooked, and the ministries you support, like Charlotte Rescue Mission, will be forgotten.

The best way to avoid this, and to minimize estate taxes, is to prepare a will or trust. These documents allow you to stay in control of your assets and leave a legacy of hope for future generations. Please read the article on the back page about the new Charlotte Rescue Mission Endowment, a fund

My family has been involved with the Charlotte Rescue Mission from the beginning. My grandfather, Guy M. Beaty, founded the

mission with Billy Graham’s father, W. Frank Graham. He was a powerful man of God and a successful entrepreneur, founding an industrial insulation company, Guy M. Beaty Company in 1917. He originally set up “God” as a shareholder in his business, receiving one eighth of all profits. When the IRS objected saying “God is not a person,” Grandfather responded, “Indeed he is!” and fought an unsuccessful battle. As a solution to the problem, he made the Charlotte Rescue Mission his shareholder. In addition, he gave 30% of his personal income to Christian causes including the mission.

that will live in perpetuity, providing long-term financial stability to this ministry. I hope you will consider a gift to the endowment as part of your estate plans.

At Charlotte Rescue Mission, our residents are breaking the cycle of poverty and addiction by transforming their lives from the inside out. They are impacting future generations by learning how to be good husbands and wives, good parents, and good citizens. Your gift

through your estate can help future generations as well, by ensuring that our doors will always be open to men and women who need help and hope.

If we can assist you, please return the reply card or call us directly. Thank you for being such a treasured friend to Charlotte Rescue Mission. Thank you for your impact.

IT’S TEMPTING TO THINK THAT “ESTATE PLANNING” IS ONLY FOR THE WEALTHY; BUT THAT ISN’T TRUE.

3 GENERATIONS OF givingAccording to family legend, he helped ‘rescue’ the Rescue Mission financially during the Depression. He also paid off the mortgage on the original Charlotte Rescue Mission building on Church Street and likely influenced its move to the current location on W. First Street in 1959, which was a block from his business.

“I HAVE YET TO SEE A NON-PROFIT THAT GETS AS MUCH OUT OF A DOLLAR AS THE CHARLOTTE RESCUE MISSION.”

My entire family has been involved ever since as regular donors and supporters, including my deceased father, Roy Beaty, mother Mary Jo, sisters Susan and Bonnie, and brother David Beaty who became the minister our grandfather and grandmother always hoped for in the family. In the late 1980s I worked with my grandfather’s business and was asked

to be on the board of the Charlotte Rescue Mission. My grandfather died in 1967, the year before I was born. By being involved in his business and the Charlotte Rescue Mission, I was able to learn about him and his great works and to honor his legacy in some small way.

As a member of the board, I was impressed with the incredible dedication of the board members and the staff, and the great stewardship with which they handled donor funds. I have yet to see a non-profit that gets as much out of a dollar as the Charlotte Rescue Mission. Even though we have sold our business and I have since moved to Atlanta, it is still an honor for our family to continue to support the mission. And I know our grandfather would be proud of the extraordinary success the mission has achieved in taking the least and the lost and bringing them into God’s arms.
