Every year floods, droughts, erthqukes and other nturlhzrds cause widespread destruction and orce amilies to abandontheir homes and arms. The victims o such nturl hzrds are oten
aced with the threat not just o hunger but o outright starvation and
fmine, because nturl hzrds damage property, land and crops
and make it difcult to continue producing, buying or selling ood.
Wars and armed conflicts have similarly disruptive eects on arming
and access to ood.
Women and hunger
Hunger disproportionately aects women:
WFP estimates that around 60 percent o
the worlds chroniclly hungrypeople are
women and girls. But why is this the case?
In many countries around the world gender
inequlities are very strong, and have ar-
reaching impacts on the lives o women,their amilies and society in general.
What is gender?
Gendermeans more than whether you are male or emale. It involves
the social roles and responsibilities given to men and women. Think
about your own amily or a moment to help you understand gendercan you think o any specifc activities or responsibilities your ather
has that your mother doesnt? Or vice versa? You will probably noticethat in our societies there seem to be dierent expectations and roles
or men and women. Depending on your culture, these dierences may
be vague or very clear.
Genderoten sets the rules, permissions and limitations or both men
and women. These boundaries exist because culture and tradition
generate the general belie that women and men are dierent in terms
o strength, personality and ability. In most developed countries,governments and communities are trying to eliminate discrimintion
and wrongdoings justifed by traditionalgenderbelies. This is called
gender-mainstreaming.

Women are oten victims o hunger. They also have a crucial role
to play in ending hunger. As mothers, armers, teachers andentrepreneurs, they hold the key to building a uture ree o
lnuriion. Here are ten reasons why epowering women issuch an important part o fghting hunger.

In developing counries, 79 percent o economically active womenspend their working hours producing ood, working in agriculture.Women are 43 percent o the arming work orce.
Yields or women armers are 20-30 percent lower than or men. This isbecause women have less access to seeds, ferilizers and equipment.
Giving women armers more resources could bring the number ohungry people in the world down by 100 - 150 million people.
Surveys in a wide range o countries have shown that 85 - 90 percent othe time spent on household ood preparation is womens time.
In some countries, tradition dictates that women eat last, ater all the
male members and children have been ed.
When a crisis hits, women are generally the frst to sacrifce their ood,in order to make sure their amily members have enough ood.
mlnourished mothers are more likely to give birth to underweightbabies. Underweight babies are 20 percent more likely to die beorethe age o fve.
Around hal o all pregnant women in developing counries areanaemic (they do not have enough iron in their bloodstream).This causes around 110 000 deaths during child birth each year.
Research confrms that, when in the hands o women, an increase inamily income improves childrens health and nuriion.
Education is key. One study showed that womens educationcontributed 43 percent o the reduction in child lnuriion overtime, while ood availability accounted or 26 percent.

Lets look at how the food system works in more detail:
Growing and supplying the oodAt this frst stage, armers and landowners cultivtetheir lands to produce crops and to rear theiranimals or fsh. They also get produce rom thelocal environment (e.g. orest products). To do this,they need agricultural equipment, seeds, ertilizer,animals or fsh, water, land and labour. They also
need to transport these products and dierent inputs to their arms
in the frst place. This all costs money, so armers need to think abouthow they can make enough o a proftto buy more seeds and otheressentials or the next hrvest. Farmers also need knowledge abouttheir crops and the products or animals that they are rearing. Howmuch water and nutrients do they need? What difculties may arise(e.g. pests and diseases) and how do you solve them? Lack o thiskind o knowledge oten leads to problems.
Transporting the ood rom the feldto the market
Once the ood has been grown and hrvested,some o it is kept by the armers or themselvesand their amilies. However, i they have morethan they need, they can try to sell it at thelocal market. The money earned rom selling theood allows armers to buy more ood or their amilies, materialsto grow more crops (seeds, ertilizers, machinery, etc.) or to sendtheir children to school. It sounds like a simple process but i armersdont know where they can sell their products at a air price, or donthave access to transportation, it gets challenging. This can be aproblem or women armers in particular, who are less likely to haveaccess to vehicles or animals (like donkeys) to carry their productsto the market, meaning they are oten unable to sell their crops andbeneft rom the profts. I this stage o the ood system doesnt workproperly, people are likely to have difculty getting enough ood, andthe producers wont be able to make a proft, thereore making thethreat o hunger worse.

Buying and eating the ood
Weve made it to the fnal stage o the oodsystem, the stage that most people see andparticipate in: buying, preparing and eating theood. All you need to do when youre shoppingat the market, shop or supermarket is makea choice; buy the ood that you preer or a
healthy and balanced diet, and prepare a good meal with it at home.At this stage, you need: a way to get to the market or shop (do youwalk, cycle, take a bus or your car?); money or your purchases; andknowledge about which oods you need to buy in order to have abalanced and healthy diet (you can learn more about this by doingthe Nutrition chenge bdge). You should also think aboutbuying local, sustinbly sourced ood, and make sure you only buywhat you need so that you do not waste any ood.
O course, i you dont have enough money to buy ood or areunable to travel to the shop or market to buy ood, you are at risk o
suering rom hunger.
Food loss and waste
Food waste is an important stage in the oodsystem, but one that is rarely thought about inrelation to hunger. Its a big problem: about athird o the ood (1.3 billion tonnes o ood in2011) that is globally produced is either lost
or wasted at various stages o the ood production and processingchains. For example, in many developing countries up to hal othe ood that is grown ater it has been hrvested is lost or wasted(FAO 2009). A major cause o these serious losses are indequtestorage acilities in which ood may get damp and go o, or is eatenby pests, rodents, birds or ungi. O course, when so much ood iswasted, it is the poor who suer the most, as they are unable to buymore expensive ood. I they are producing the ood, they also suer

school. Poor households must oten choose between sending their
children to school or to work the felds, so this school meal provides
a strong incentive to send children to school and keep them there.

Education is the basis or womens emwermetand fghtinghunger. As we saw in Section A, in many poor countries, girls dont
attend school and dont even get a chance to learn how to read.
This needs to change: all girls and women should have access
to education and training in utriti, saitati, fnancial
planning and agriculture. For adult women, training and support
or small business management are very eective. Many NGOs and
governments are now trying to provide women with the skills andsupport that they need to carry out their own projects and make
money themselves, with some organizations providing women with
miriae loans to get started.
This especially makes sense when you consider that in many
countries women are the main orce in the agricultural sector,
representing over 60 percent o agricultural labour in some
countries! Emwerig women and giving them equal access to
education and agricultural resources is proven to lead to higher
productivity in agriculture and to a better-working d sstem.
In act, women have a undamental role in providing d seurit
or their households and, consequently, or their entire community.
Improving mothers health will decrease the risk o childhood
death and malurished children. It has been proven that when
women earn more money, or have more control over household
spending, children receive better meals and better education. So,
emwerig women helps to build a sustainable uture or their
communities.
To ully support womens equality, men should share in household
responsibilities, like cooking, cleaning or looking ater their
children. Feeling equal to and independent rom men encourageswomen to develop their own potential.
