Q12015NURU MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: SYLVIA ROBI

Peter Keboye, Elizabeth Maroa and their four children became a Nuru member household in 2008. Through Nuru Kenya, they reported

doubling their maize harvest from 20 to 40 200-lb sacks; built strong savings habits and taken advantage of a loan through a Nuru savings

group; and reduced frequent hospital visits by practicing healthy behaviors and learning to prevent disease. Peter and Elizabeth

are especially proud that their only daughter, Sylvia Robi, has learned to read. Sylvia can now confidently differentiate

vowels, consonants, syllabification, nouns and verbs. She knows that her improvement in spoken and written English

has helped her in other subjects. Sylvia first attended Nuru Kenya Education Program outreach classes in

2010 when she was in Standard 3 at Keborui Primary School in Isebania Division. Now in Standard 7, Sylvia

looks forward to performing well on national exams in the coming year. If she does well,

Sylvia will have an opportunity that many girls in her community

historically haven’t had: the possibility of attending

secondary school.

“Based on the ideas, knowledge and skills I have gathered in the TOT series, the skills I have applied are focusing on activities and participants more during the trainings. Engaging

participants [in] more activities is one technique for adult learners that I have learnt and am putting into practice. I have also applied the feedback session after

trainings which we use to debrief with the rest of education team.” –Ambrose
