Light is one of the basic elements that make life possible. It is the sun that ensures this planet’s existence by providing warmth and brightness. We cannot manage without light in our everyday lives. It gives us energy and a feeling of comfort and security and has a beneficial effect on our health and wellbeing.

Not just at home but also at work, the presence and intensity of light is essential for people to be able to function properly. It leads to better performance because it raises our concentration levels and boosts our productivity. Light also has a positive impact on work satisfaction and sick-related absenteeism. In addition, light ensures that the risk of accidents in the workplace can be significantly reduced1).

Increased energy consumption by lightingThe amount of energy we consume for our lighting increases every year2). The growth of new-build, the renovation of old buildings with limited window spaces and the increase of large open plan offices are all leading to the greater consumption of energy to support our need for light whether that be in offices or public buildings.

In some buildings lighting is the largest single category of electricity consumption. For office buildings in Europe it accounts for as much as half of the building’s total energy use2). This trend is set to grow because companies have to comply with ever stricter rules on the minimum amount of lighting needed in the workplace.

With concerns about the need to cut carbon emissions caused by fossil fuel energy, we need to find ways to satisfy the rising demand for light in an energy efficient way. The European Union has committed its member countries to improving their energy-efficiency rates by 20% by 2020 (COM 2007)2).

If we can find a way to reduce the amount of energy that lighting consumes we can reconcile the twin competing demands for less energy use and a greater amount of light.

How then can we reduce light’s energy bills in offices, public buildings, healthcare facilities and schools? The answer lies in the way we design interiors. A lighter environment produces greater light reflection. More specifically, ceilings, walls and floors can be designed to produce greater levels of light reflection because they cover large surfaces. The more reflection, the less artificial light has to do to produce the light required.

As a result the number of artificial light sources can be reduced. So, smarter interior design can lead to direct economic and environmental benefits3).

3) Data based on calculations made with the DIALux software, based on closed cell office without furniture and without windows. The results depend on the size of the room, the height of the ceiling, the amount of light coming in from outside and the nature of the surroundings generally.

Light Reflectance Value (LRV) is a measure that is used primarily in the interior and design world and is the total quantity of visible and usable light (of all wavelengths and in every direction) reflected by surfaces that are illuminated by a light source4).

The LRV scale is exponential and runs from zero, which is a perfectly absorbing surface (regarded as totally black), to 100, which is a fully reflective surface (regarded as perfect white). The structure and gloss of the product or surface are also determining factors for LRV in addition to colour4).

Lighting designers make extensive use of the LRV in order to calculate the required number of light fittings and the strength of the artificial light sources in a room.

4) General definition, (in variations) used in other industries (i.e. paint, ceilings, ceramics) for many years.

The floor, usually one of the largest surfaces in a room, can make a big difference to the amount of light reflected. To meet this need, Desso’s product designers have developed the DESSO Light Reflection Master® – a carpet collection that is able to reduce lighting energy costs.

External and independent tests have been performed to determine the effect of the DESSO Light Reflection Master®. They indicate that carpets with high LRV’s can improve the brightness on the walls and ceilings by up to 14%5).

As a result lighting costs can be reduced by up to 10%5), while cutting down on the quantity of energy related CO2 emissions. To get the best results, you can draw up a plan based on the number of light fittings you need in relation to the Light Reflectance Values of the various materials and surfaces in the room.

A regular and thorough cleaning and maintenance program is important for every flooring solution. For DESSO Light Reflection Master® it ensures an optimal performance of the carpets reflection.

Additional benefits

of a lighter working

environment

The DESSO Light Reflection Master® can achieve even more than cutting energy bills and reducing carbon emissions. Products in this collection can also have a positive effect on our health and wellbeing.

In a lighter environment, people operate more effectively. They are better able to concentrate while feeling more content and comfortable. Having the extra light also means the surroundings are likely to be safer6).

Installing products from this carpet collection can also boost the number of LEED Credits you get in the Energy and Atmospheric category.

Minimum requirements and standards have been set in many countries with regard to the amount of light that should be present in the workplace to be able to function properly. Since September 2002, lighting requirements for spaces and workplace activities have been laid down by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN), which sets out the lighting requirements for each activity7).

More regulations of building energy use

The energy use of buildings is getting more and more regulated. On 28 October 2011, the French government enacted its RT 2012 thermal regulation9). This sets an upper limit to the level of energy consumption in public buildings, educational establishments and commercial buildings (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, hot water production and lighting).

The 2002 edition of the UK building code requires that office, industrial and storage area light fittings have a minimum average efficacy (IEA 2006). In Denmark, some voluntary standards recommend maximum Lighting Power Density (LPD) levels in watts per square metre (ENPER-TEBUC 2003). Other countries, such as Australia, Mexico and China apply building code standards for the energy performance of lighting in buildings10).

DESSO Light Reflection Master® can help to reduce the energy costs of running a building, because the lighting systems do not have to use as much energy to provide the workplace with the required amount of light.

About DESSO®

Desso focuses primarily on superior floor design and Cradle to Cradle®, in providing high quality carpet tiles and broadloom. Its commercial product offering, business carpets, represents more than half of total sales and can be found in offices, banks, retail units, public buildings, schools, universities and care centres. Desso’s innovation strategy is concentrated in 3 key areas: Creativity, Functionality and Cradle to Cradle®. For Desso, creativity is synonymous with CARPETECTURE®, which is a powerful example of Desso’s commitment to creative carpet design and its dedication to meet the needs of architects, interior designers, building owners and end users. In the field of functionality, Desso develops pioneering solutions that make a difference for health, wellness and wellbeing. As a result of this innovation and creativity strategy, Desso has launched a number of patented products like DESSO AirMaster®, for 8 times lower fine-dust concentration in the air (versus hard floors), and DESSO EcoBase®, which enabled Desso to achieve a Cradle to Cradle® silver certificate for an entire carpet tile product.

Desso Consumer Carpets is represented by three strong brands: Parade, Bonaparte and Desso. All with a rich history in manufacturing high-end consumer carpets where products are available through specialist retail traders, plus selected carpet stores and home furnishing shops. Desso Consumer Carpets is the only European high end consumer carpet company with sales in Benelux, Germany, France, Switzerland and Austria.

Desso’s creative carpet design and service oriented approach has enabled Desso to become a leader in developing solutions for the Hospitality, Marine and Aviation (HMA) markets. Desso’s HMA division works with companies such as Hilton, Intercontinental, Maritime, KLM, China Airlines, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Holland America Line.

Desso Sports is a leading player in the provision of artificial turf for sports fields and reinforced natural grass systems that provide the perfect surface at every level of sport. DESSO GrassMaster® is a sports field of natural grass reinforced with Desso synthetic grass fibres, which has been installed in two Euro 2012 stadiums and in ‘football temple’ Wembley.

Cradle to Cradle®

In signing a partnership agreement with the Hamburg-based Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA), Desso has become the first carpet manufacturer in EMEA to adopt the Cradle to Cradle® design. It marks Desso’s radical decision to move beyond ‘mere’ sustainability in producing its carpets and artificial grass. In the Cradle to Cradle® principles, products are made from positively defined* components that are easy to disassemble, in order to create new products in both the biological and technical cycles.

Desso is active in more than 100 countries and can look back on almost 80 years of proven performance, having built a reputation as a leading manufacturer of high quality carpet tiles, broadloom and artificial grass pitches.

Desso has two factories and a major distribution centre in Europe, as well as specialist customer service centres throughout Europe, in America, Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Australia.
