MULWAREE HIGH SCHOOL

Endeavour to Achieve

A Prospectus

and Guide

for New Students

2011/2012

Mulwaree is named after one of the original local

aboriginal clans from the area.

Governor Macquarie, who came from the County of

Argyle in Scotland and gave this area its name, used

the Campbell tartan which has become the pattern

for the school’s summer uniform. The green and

white of the tartan has formed the school colours.

The school emblem was designed by a student, Glenn

Fulford in 1971. The emblem shows the War

Memorial, a prominent landmark in Goulburn,

incorporated into an aboriginal design.

Endeavour to Achieve

FACILITIES AND FEATURES

Agriculture The Agricultural facility has a 17 hectare site that has been specifically designed to cater for student experiences in traditional and non-traditional agricultural areas. These areas include sheep, cattle, poultry and alpacas, pasture crops, berries, herbs, fruit trees and agro forestry. The facility is connected to the Field Studies Centre, giving the school a 32 hectare site at its disposal.

Careers Mulwaree High School has the benefit of a Careers teacher. Students are involved in Career lessons and Mrs Roberts is available for personal interviews with students and parents to discuss the wide range of matters which may relate to students’ career planning.

Computer Access Mulwaree High School boasts two state of the art computer labs each containing 24 computers which are connected to the Internet and to the school’s intranet. Two mini computer labs are located in the A8 and H.S.I.E. Department. HSIE houses six computers with Internet access and there are 15 in A8. The library also has excellent computer access with 21 computers connected to the Internet for student use.

Field Studies Centre Located adjacent to the main school site is a Field Studies Centre for use by our school’s students, as well as students at all district schools. The Centre contains a range of learning experiences centred around the environment. The Centre includes a wetlands area, endangered and threatened native animal and plant communities, water pollution monitoring, a salinity trial, a solar/wind farm, residential pollution monitoring sites and an archaeological site. These sites have been worked into the school’s Science and H.S.I.E. curricula.

Remembrance Project Begun in 1992, the Remembrance Project has been warmly embraced by the Goulburn and District community. As it stands today the project boasts a free-standing library building housing around 5,000 items of militaria, all of them history resources. Our school has a sister school in Marquion, France near a famous World War I battlefield and bordering the school grounds. Students have planted a native tree for each and every citizen of Goulburn who was killed in twentieth century wars. The school also has a student Anzac Club, the first in Australia, and the idea has been so successful, other schools in this and other Australian states have established their own clubs.

“The Cafe” at Mulwaree High School Hospitality at Mulwaree has had a significant transformation. Our focus has changed from the delivery of Commercial Cookery units to Food and Beverage. Students will now attain Certificate II Hospitality Multi skilling. With these changes has come the need to develop a working Cafe arrangement so that students have “real” preparation and customer service experiences. A classroom has been modified to create “The Cafe”. So far “The Cafe” has a commercial Espresso machine, milkshake makers, toasted sandwich press, stainless steel benching and cupboards. We are gradually building up our resources with profits made from our recess and lunchtime sessions.

Speech & Drama Room Mulwaree High School has the only specifically built drama room in Goulburn. Over the past 15 years, students, parents and staff have worked to upgrade and improve the facilities in this room. The room has a sound system, a programmable lighting grid, a costume and props room and a scaffold system to construct sets easily. The room has been developed to enable students to learn the various elements of production, whether it is acting, sound, lighting, costuming or set construction, through hands-on experience.

ASSESSMENTS AND REPORTS

Reporting

Mulwaree students receive two school reports. A report is received at the end of each semester.

Across the year, formal testing is used as one of the assessment methods for Years 9 - 12. The procedure varies from faculty to faculty and is usually a combination of formal examination and on-going assessment.

Some formal testing is used in Years 7 and 8 throughout the year but results are mainly determined by class tests and on-going assessment.

Formal examinations become more important in the senior years and students need to develop good examination techniques for success in these years.

Progress Reporting/ Parent Teacher Meetings

Progress reporting occurs at the end of Term 1 and Term 3. Parent teacher evenings follow these reports in early Term 2 and Term 4 so that parents can discuss their child’s progress with relevant teachers.

Parent Teacher Meetings are most important. Parents should regard these meetings as compulsory. Student progress can be explained more fully by taking this opportunity and speaking with Teachers.

Award of the School Certificate – Years 7-10 (In Review by the Board of Studies)

The Board of Studies requires students to study courses in English, Mathematics, Science, Australian History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education in each of Years 7-10. Students are also required to study courses in Creative Arts, Technology and Applied Studies and Languages Other Than English. These courses are completed in Years 7 & 8 at Mulwaree High School and may be continued in Years 9 and 10. Progression from year to year is determined by the Principal and is based on students demonstrating a sustained effort in their courses and a satisfactory attendance pattern.

Award of the Higher School Certificate – Years 11 & 12

The Board of Studies requires students to complete a minimum 12 units of approved Preliminary Courses and a minimum of 10 units of Higher School Certificate courses for the award of a Higher School Certificate. English is the only compulsory course. There are various pathways to obtain the certificate with most students taking two years. Mulwaree High School offers a wide selection of courses, including VET courses. Progression is determined by students completing at least fifty percent of assessment tasks, demonstrating sustained effort in their courses and a satisfactory attendance pattern. The minimum attendance required at Mulwaree High School is 85% in all courses. Should it fall below this level, a student is not eligible for that course or the Higher School Certificate.

Homework Students cannot achieve their full potential without a program of homework and home study. Each student has homework, whether it is actually set or not. An indication of time to spend on homework is: Year 7 - 1 hour per night, 5 nights per week Year 8 - 1½ hours per night, 5 nights per week Year 9 - 2 hours per night, 5 nights per week Year 10 - 2½ hours per night, 5 nights per week Years 11 & 12 - 3 hours per night, 5 nights per week More time should be allocated nearer tests. As bookwork is important, simple activities such as illustrating with sketches, colouring in of maps, drawing margins, and underlining headings are all interesting ways of revising work. No student can claim that he or she has no homework. The use of a homework diary assists students to organise homework efficiently and improve their school results.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Mulwaree High School caters for a wide range of extra curricular activities. These activities include:

Public Speaking and Debating Mulwaree has developed an excellent record of success. Opportunities exist at school and class level. Our students have achieved success at national, state and regional levels: 2009 Zone Champions in Year 9 and 10 Premier’s Challenge debating competition. 2010 Zone Champions in the 9 and 10 Premier’s Challenge debating competition. 2010 Regional Finalists and Runners Year 9

and 10 Premier’s Challenge debating competition

2010 Bridget Devery chosen as a member

of the Regional DebatingTeam. 2010 Winners of the Goulburn and District

Rostrum Voice and Youth Public Speaking Competition.

School Charity Appeals These activities provide opportunities for students to assist worthwhile charities, for example House, C.A.N.T.E.E.N., Stuart House, Legacy and Charity Fund Raising Days

Australian Science Competition, Westpac Maths Competition, & National Australia Bank Language Certificate

The opportunity exists to become involved in these national contests with opportunities to receive prizes and certificates.

School Band, Choir & Other Musical Groups

These groups meet each week, most frequently at lunchtime, or after school. They provide a great opportunity to develop skills and to interact with other students with similar interests. Students from beginner to advanced levels are welcome and catered for. There are some band instruments available for loan from the Music Department.

Work Experience

An integral part of the Career Education Program is “Work Experience” in which all Year 10 participate in third term. This is an excellent opportunity for students to discover what it is really like to work in their chosen field or industry.

STUDENT LEADERS

Student Prefects

The Mulwaree High School Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects are elected from current Years 11 by both the staff and Year 11 students for the following year.

The Prefects conduct various activities at Mulwaree which benefit both staff and students including formal assemblies, fund raising, sport, faculty functions and community affairs.

The Prefects not only represent the school at important assemblies and ceremonial functions, they also provide a role model in sport, scholarship and leadership for the junior students at Mulwaree.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

Mulwaree High School operates a Student Representative Council which consists of 30 members. The present Council’s term will end in August, at which time four new representatives from each year will be elected from Years 7 - 11. They will then hold their positions for 12 months. The object of the Student Representative Council is to improve Mulwaree High School for the benefit of the students. The pupils are often aware of problems that are not seen by staff or parents and the hope is that such problems can be solved. Some recent achievements of the SRC have included new seating, fostering children in the Philippines, sports representative fund, dress up days and many other activities such as school socials held once a term. We look forward to further improvements in the next twelve months. All new students, particularly Year 7, should try to keep in touch with what the Council is doing, and if interested, should nominate for a position in June.

SRC Socials

Socials are run once a term by the SRC and supervised on a voluntary basis by staff. The Socials go from 7:30 - 10:30pm (Daylight Saving time) or 6:30 – 9:30pm at other times. Students must stay until the end unless collected by a parent. Students who have not been co-operative during the term and have received a suspension, or have completed afternoon detentions, are not permitted to attend.

Student Representative Council 2011/2012

THE MULWAREE ENDEAVOUR AWARDS SCHEME

The Mulwaree Endeavour Awards recognise students’ extra efforts in their academic, sporting, cultural and school service pursuits. Students gain Achievement Tickets, commonly referred to as “Green Tickets”, to acknowledge these efforts. Each term, tickets go into a draw for a variety of prizes. Prize draws take place at end of term assemblies. Each year, students who have gained 10 tickets in Years 7-9 and 5 tickets in Years 10-12 in that year are given the opportunity to go on an Awards Excursion. Achievement Tickets accumulate and the following Awards can be achieved:

30 Tickets Bronze Award

60 Tickets Silver Award

100 Tickets Gold Award

150+ Tickets Platinum Award (Year 12 students only)

Achievement tickets will be deducted from students who have displayed inappropriate behaviour. Tickets will be permanently removed and will not be included in end of term prize draws, or taken into consideration for Awards excursions or certificate awards. Deductions will take place at the end of each term. Deductions are as follows:

1 ticket for each afternoon detention

5 tickets for each short suspension

10 tickets for each long suspension Bronze Awards will be presented to eligible students each year at the end of Semester 1 Presentation Assembly. Silver and Gold awards will be presented to eligible students in Years 8, 9 & 11 at the end of year Presentation Evening. Students will only be able to receive one award (eg. Bronze, Silver or Gold) per year. For example, if a student is eligible for a Bronze and Silver award in the same year, they will receive the Bronze award first and the Silver award the following year. Students in Years 10 and 12 are presented with awards at their Formal Presentation Ceremonies. As this is their final school year, Year 12 students will be presented with all awards they are eligible to receive at their Formal Presentation Ceremony.

This is a whole school initiative. Students are encouraged to participate in this scheme and to aim to do their best in all aspects of their schooling.

LITERACY

R.I.B.I.T.

“Read In Bed It’s Terrific” is an additional school reading program. One English period

per week is set aside for students to read a book of their own choice. The book should be finished at home and it is recommended that parents discuss these books with their children. A system of record folders is used as follow up and to encourage co-operation and communication between parents, students and teachers in this important area of literacy.

Library The Mulwaree High School Library has excellent, modern facilities and contains many resources to assist all students in their studies. The many sources of information include books, magazines, videos, DVDs, newspapers, multimedia CD ROMs, charts and pamphlets, all of which can be used for school work. Most items are available for loan. Year 7 students follow a library orientation program in which they are shown how to use the catalogues and indexes, how to locate information, and how to use the materials and equipment to improve their school work. Recently published quality fiction books are a feature of the reading material. The Library has 30 computers with up-to-date data bases and supervised internet access which are available for student use in research. A photocopy service is available at 10 cents per copy. Computer printing is also available at 10 cents per copy unless recycled paper is used. The Library is open to students before school from 8.30am, during lunch times and after school for a short time.

GENERAL SCHOOL INFORMATION

Administration Office and Enquiries The school’s administration office is located near the main entrance to the school and is open between the hours of 8:30am and 3:30pm each day during the school term. Please direct your enquiries in the first instance to this office. The Clerical Staff will then be able to help you obtain the information or appointment you require.

Interviews Matters concerning student’s progress may be discussed with the Year Adviser. All appointments with the Year Adviser, Deputy Principal or Principal can be arranged by prior appointment. Please phone the school office on 4821 4499.

Parent / Teacher Meetings These meetings are arranged to follow the Progress Reports at the end of Terms 1 and 3 and are held early in Terms 2 and 4. They are most important and parents should regard such meetings as compulsory. The progress report can be explained more fully by taking this opportunity and speaking with your child’s teachers. Parents will receive an invitation and are urged to discuss the report with their child prior to attending the meeting.

Mulwaree News

Each week, your child will receive a copy of the Mulwaree News. The Mulwaree News is normally received by your child each Monday. The newsletter contains many items of interest about programs and courses conducted at the school. Dates and other important matters will also appear and the school must assume that you are aware of these matters.

Parents and Citizen’s Association The P&C Association meets once each month, presently on the fourth Thursday at 7:30pm. The meetings are held in the school’s Staff Common Room. The P&C is an important organisation in the school community. Please offer your support to the meetings and/or the special activities that require parent participation.

Excursions Most faculties conduct excursions which are an integral part of the curriculum. Students must have a record of co-operative behaviour to be considered for excursions and the right to attend is subject to review by the Principal or Deputy Principal. All excursions are self-funding and refunds are not normally given. If excursions have restricted numbers, then prompt payment and return of permission notes will determine availability. Parents are asked to ensure that they are waiting to collect their child where excursions finish after school hours. The P&C have agreed that where students are not collected, the safety of the student is ensured by sending them home by taxi at the family’s cost.

Textbooks The school provides the necessary texts on a loan basis. The student is responsible for the return of the book in the same condition as the book was received.

General School Contribution The General School Contribution is used to provide a text book hiring service. You will appreciate the need of any school to supply its students with such material as texts, library reference books, sporting equipment, educational aids and software. Please see the separate sheet for details of the contribution structure.

Elective Subject Contributions Subject Contributions are charged to cover the cost of materials used in certain courses. Naturally, in the event of any family financial problems, a private approach either by the student or by the parent to the Principal or the Deputy will secure immediate and sympathetic attention. The Student Assistance Scheme may assist these families.

School Houses Students are placed into one of four houses for various competitions within the school. Each house has its own colour and animal emblem. The Houses are:

BANJORA (red) - Koala

MARLOO (yellow) - Kangaroo

PINYALI (green) - Emu

TARMAROO (blue) - Possum

Mulwaree High runs a competitive House competition. Students compete in Swimming, Cross Country Running and Athletics Carnivals and other smaller lunchtime competitions throughout the year.

Sport Numerous teams are entered in the CHS Knock-Out competitions and all students have the opportunity to trial for these teams. Students showing particular ability in a team or individual sport are given the opportunity to trial for Zone and South Coast teams.

ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL

Time to Arrive at School Students should arrive at school between 8.30am and 8.45am in time for morning Roll Call. No student should be at the school before 8:30am as there is only minimal supervision.

Student Bus Service There will be a number of students travelling to school by bus. Free bus travel is available to those students who live 2 kilometres radial distance or more from the school. The 2 kilometre radial cut off point is measured by the Department of Transport. Application forms are available from the school office. Replacements for lost bus passes are to be obtained from PBC Bus Company (4821 2320). The school bus stand is in McDermott Drive. Students who travel by bus are reminded that they must conduct themselves in a proper manner when travelling on buses. Misbehaviour could lead to the bus company refusing particular children permission to travel on their buses. Students should proceed into the school immediately after alighting from the bus.

Private Car Conveyance to School Bus A subsidy is available for parents who have to take their child to a school bus by car over a distance of, or greater than, 1.6 kilometres. Please contact the school for an application form. This conveyance subsidy is calculated from date of application. You are advised to make sure that your application is handed to the school by the beginning of the school year. A separate application should be made for each student.

Bicycles Bicycles must be left in the bicycle racks at the front of the school. Entry to the school and leaving the school is along the bike track only. Students are to leave the bicycle area immediately they park their bikes. A padlock will assist in the safe-keeping of their bike. It is law that every student riding a bicycle must also wear a helmet.

VARIATIONS TO NORMAL SCHOOL ROUTINE

Late Arrival Report to the Deputy Principal. Fill in the Late Book. Obtain a note for admission to class. Lateness contributes to total absences recorded on student report forms. A note from a parent explaining lateness should be given to your roll teacher the following school day. Punctual arrival at school is important. Any pattern of late arrival has serious consequences. Late arrival on three occasions without a legitimate reason will result in after school detention.

Sickness If you do not feel well or have an accident at school, you should report to the office. Students who require medication at school need to fill in a “Deed of Indemnity” form at the school office.

Absences from school The Law requires students to be present at school each day the school is open. Regulations require that a note signed by the parent, be sent to the school on the first day of the student’s return. This note should be handed to your Roll Call teacher. Students who truant from school will be placed on after school detention.

Appointments during the day No student may leave the school without prior permission. A note from home giving the reason for leaving school must be brought each time the student wishes to leave and be presented to the Deputy Principal before Roll Call. Students will complete the details in an absentee book kept in the Office as they leave, showing the signed note to the office staff member. Failure to follow this procedure will result in an after school detention.

Lunch Passes A permission form is available from the office. A lunch pass will be issued if the school permission form is signed by the parent and returned to the Deputy. No student may hold a bus and lunch pass. Remember lunch is only 38 minutes. A lunch pass is only issued if a parent will be home at lunchtime. As a rule, students are expected to remain at school because of the brevity of the lunch period.

Lost Property Students should check with the office to see if the article has been handed in. Do not bring large amounts of money or unnecessary or expensive equipment to school. Parents, PLEASE LABEL ALL CLOTHING WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME.

Student Use of Mobile Phones With the increasing misuse of mobile phones within the school it has become necessary to change the school’s policy. THE FOLLOWING RULES WILL NOW APPLY:

Students are not to bring mobile phones to school.

Mobile phones on excursion and sporting visits will be at the discretion of the organiser.

This policy has been fully supported by the student SRC and the P&C Association of

Mulwaree High School.

Any need to contact students can be done through the front office of the school on 4821

4499.

If a phone is sighted by a teacher, the phone will be confiscated. Parents will be asked to

collect the phone after a week.. NO NOTES WILL BE ACCEPTED.

PRACTICAL SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS

Practical Subject Requirements

In some subjects, students will be required to perform practical work eg. Science experiments, food preparation, and will be required to wear appropriate protective clothing and footwear as instructed by class teachers. This applies to both boys and girls. Technical workshops, Science laboratories and kitchens are equipped with machines which require strict safety precautions. For the protection of the student, and to comply with existing safety regulations, the following conditions apply: 1. Shoes with leather uppers and solid soles (i.e. standard black school shoes) must be worn. Pupils must not wear sports shoes or other non-regulation footwear in practical work areas. 2. Hair must be tied back. 3. Rings and other jewellery should not be worn in practical work areas.

Book Requirements

The school and the P&C provide book packs for each Year (lists and prices are provided at the back of this booklet) which will be available from the Canteen during the last week of the Christmas school holiday break (specific date to be advised via local media) and from the office when school resumes. The book packs contain books for all subjects and each Year will be notified of the set of books required.

If purchasing books elsewhere, please consult the list in the back of this booklet for correct requirements.

Care of Books

To ensure that books last for the year and are attractive and easily recognisable, it is suggested they be covered with pictures, coloured paper or brown paper and then with clear plastic or contact.

STUDENT DISCIPLINE AND WELFARE

Student Welfare The school has an important role in the personal and social development of students as well as their intellectual and physical growth. There are a number of programs aimed at personal development and all staff are involved in the pastoral care of students. There are also particular staff members with special student welfare roles. In junior years, the Health programs cover a range of important personal growth issues. Some of these are also dealt with in subject areas such as Science and Social Science. The School Counsellor works closely with other staff members in the Student Welfare area. The Year Advisers and the Careers Adviser also have important roles in these areas for all of our students. The school has procedures for identifying problem areas with students and dealing with these through reports to parents, parent interviews and referrals by the School Counsellor to community counselling and support services, when appropriate. Appointments to see the School Counsellor may be made by contacting the office.

The School Learning Support Teacher. Where there is a concern about your child’s progress with reading, writing or Mathematics then the School Learning Support Teacher (SLST) may assist. Please contact the teacher through the office if you have concerns in these areas.

CANTEEN INFORMATION

The Canteen is the main fundraiser for the P&C. The Canteen operates efficiently through the P&C Canteen Committee but requires additional volunteer help. The Canteen is in need of volunteer workers to work for four hours once a month. Volunteers are required to make bread rolls and sandwiches for the children at Mulwaree and serve at the counter at recess and lunchtime. You will find the children are very polite and well supervised by the teachers who allow only two children to a window at any time. It is an enjoyable day, not a difficult one and it is one way you can contribute to making Mulwaree High School an even better school. If four hours is too long, just to serve at lunchtime for 45 minutes is a wonderful help. It is also a great way to feel less “shut out” of your children’s high school lives. Please give it some serious thought. We really need your help and with every new worker come fresh ideas. If you can assist the Canteen in some way, please contact Julie White at the Canteen on 4821 3004. School uniform items are available at the Canteen. Please see page 28 for a uniform price list. The Canteen also has a clothing pool for second hand clothing. Please take one minute of your time to read some very interesting facts about our canteen.

Canteen Facts

* MHS Canteen makes about $25,000 per annum, all of which is used by the school for your children.

* Every volunteer receives a free lunch.

* Every volunteer receives $2 off the price of their child’s lunch on the day they work.

The time given by those who work in the Canteen is, and should always be, appreciated by parents, children and school staff.

Without them, the Canteen would not be possible.

Many, many thanks.
