1. Introduction

SpeedUP! Europe (SUE) is a disruptive end‐to‐end acceleration and support program to foster

entrepreneurial education, innovation and ramp‐up to finance. It is embedded in the European

Commission Future Internet‐Public Private Partnership (FI‐PPP) Program under the 7th framework,

and related to Future Internet Platform “FI‐WARE”, the Open Source Generic Enablers Building

blocks. The programme was launched with 16 other accelerators as part of the last phase of FI‐PPP

with the goal of creating an eco‐system of entrepreneurs and SME‐driven innovation.

Through SUE, up to 100 entrepreneurs and SME’s can be funded with €50,000, as well as receiving

coaching, training, and access to many events within the period of the programme. These start‐ups

and SME’s were to develop innovative services based on the FI‐WARE generic & specific enablers in

the areas of AgriBusiness, SmartCities and CleanTech. The application period started in the fall‐

winter of 2014, then the approved projects would begin February 2015 and ending October 31st

2015. The project is present in several cities through “hub” system; Hamburg, Stockholm,

Copenhagen and Amsterdam. The SUE teams are supported by a combination of virtual tools (online

platform for matchmaking, idea generation and call management) and a series of physical

workshops organized across Europe, where entrepreneurs can meet, grow their ideas, develop their

product and receive feedback from customer, partners and investors.

This report describes the collaboration activities within SpeedUP! Europe project and is related to

task 6.8 Collaboration (task leader: Glocal Consult). The Coordinator, in person (Olaf‐gerd Gemein

until 15 January 2015 and Stefan Stengel afterwards)played a big role in making collaboration

happen during the project.

2. Descriptionoftheworkpackageandthespecifictaskoncollaborationreport

Collaboration is an important component of SpeedUP Europe and was envisioned since the inception

of the programme. As described in the SpeedUP Europe DoW, the Deliverable D6.8 Collaboration

Report is linked to WP6 Exploitation, Dissemination & Collaboration, more specifically to task 6.4

Collaboration under the leadership of Glocal Consult.

Task 6.4 Collaboration as described in the DoW tackles 3 different aspects of collaboration:

‐ Connect the SUE teams to the FIWARE eco‐system;

As part of the A16 accelerators, SUE teams have to integrate to the FIWARE community to develop

their network of entrepreneurs and innovators, in addition to have access to other start‐ups’ know‐

how concerning the technology FIWARE and its specificities.



‐ Connect the SUE teams to important stakeholders;

Through collaborative events, SUE teams will have the possibility to meet important stakeholders

such as: investors, business angels, coaches, mentors, etc. Furthermore, SUE teams could take

advantage of the wide network of entrepreneurs from the consortium.

‐ Connect the SUE teams to each other’s (create a community);

The goal of SUE is to create an eco‐system of entrepreneurs and SMEs. Event attendance

developped a strong sense of community among the teams, which is beneficial in many ways; from

sharing each other’s knowledge of entrepreneurship, to receiving constructive criticism, as well as

developing business partnerships and ideas.

3. CollaborationwithFI‐PPPandFIWAREecosystem Several activities have taken place on collaboration activities by SpeedUP Europe with the other FI‐

PPP projects and FIWARE ecosystem:

The coordinator of SpeedUP Europe has represented the consortium at all the A16 meetings with the other accelerators

From June 2014 to January 2016, Olaf‐Gerd Gemein attended all the A16 meetings. After January 2016 Stefan Stengel took this role from Olaf‐Gerd Gemein

Glocal Consult has participated in the online and physical meetings of the FI‐PPP Steering Board and further, Olaf‐Gerd Gemein was elected as co‐chairman of the FI‐PPP Steering Board, thus ensuring a preponderant position inside the FI‐PPP Steering board

SpeedUP Europe has participated in different task forces with other projects like the Community Building, FIWARE Technical group, FIWARE Mundus audio conferences, Smart Cities

SpeedUP Europe partners have had an active role in the presence of FIWARE at certain events such as:

o CEBIT 2015 where the Open & Agile Smart Cities (OASC) initiative was announced and signed

o Metropolitan Solutions Conference in Berlin from 31st of May to 2nd of June 2015

o Global City Team Challenge in Washington On June 1st, 2015 in collaboration with FIWARE Mundus

o ECFI: The 3rd European Conference on the Future Internet was facilitated by SpeedUP Europe and held in Hamburg from the 4th‐6th of November 2015. The international conference run over 3 days and was a mix of keynote speakers, pitches and workshops for the FIWARE ecosystem



o Lean Startup Conference: 45 attendees from FINISH and SpeedUP! Europe visited the Lean Startup Conference in San Francisco to learn more about the Lean Startup Method from Eric Ries

o VIP Bootcamp: in May 2016 three of our best teams attended the A16 VIP Bootcamp in Milano. At thst workshop many teams from the whole program colloborated together and met experts to support the next funding rounds

4. Intraprojectcollaboration:Collaborationamongteamsandbetweenteamsandexperts

Collaboration among teams was done mainly through events and workshops planned for

collaboration purpose as well as within the hubs. The goal is to create and expend the

community/network of start‐ups.

4.1. Events&WorkshopsM7–M16 As seen in task 4.2, many events and workshops were organized as part of the acceleration

programme which have facilitated the collaboration within the SpeedUP Europe programme among

teams and between the teams and experts present at these events.

Furthermore, the collaboration was facilitated by the participation of SpeedUP Europe at events and

conferences organized by the FIWARE ecosystem, which allowed our startups to meet and

collaborate with startups from other accelerators as well as with other stakeholders from the

ecosystem, making them feel that they are part of a larger ecosystem.

The consortium has facilitated a vast number of workshops covering various stages of the project

e.g.:



• BootCamp FIWARE Edition 2014 from 1st to 6th of October 2014 focused on team formation and

idea generation: a 48‐hours challenge where web‐entrepreneurs met their peers, work together on

specific ideas and formed new teams as a result of the event. We had 80 participants at that

Bootcamp.

• Design Workshop was organised on 14 October 2015 focused on product/service development: a

1‐day event where teams are educated on web design and user experience, allowing them to

mature their ideas. We had 14 participants at that Worskhop.

• Business Model Innovation Camps: a series of events where teams were educated about Business

Model Canvas and Business Model Ontology and applied the frameworks (Runpat, Business Model

Innovation Navigator, Business Cube= to their own ideas

• Collaboration Camp for Smart Cities at 31th October 2014 in Hamburg : a 1 day event organized

with “Smart City” cluster in Hamburg where teams pitched to stakeholders in order to assess the

potential of their ideas and recruit partners, 38 participants



• Software Architecture Camp: a 2‐day event where teams were educated about the latest

developments in agile software development, this was done in Hamburg as well as in Stockholm at

28th/29th October 2014 in Kista/Stockholm with 15 participants

• StartUp Weekend from 17th to 19th October in Berlin in Cooperation with European Pioneers: a

weekend‐long challenge where teams develop a prototype of their idea based on the FIWARE

generic enablers in Berlin. 60 participants

• Entrepreneurship Academy: a series of physical courses focusing on various aspects of the

entrepreneurial journey, from lean startup to agile software development and business‐planning



• Entrepreneurship Summit was held during the ECFI 2015 from 4th to 6th November 2015 in

Hamburg: a 3‐day event celebrating entrepreneurship in Europe, where the best projects generated

in this programme were featured, and the top 5 projects selected to receive awards.

4.2. CollaborationwithinHubs

SpeedUP! Europe established 4 local hubs located in four European cities: Hamburg, Amsterdam,

Copenhagen, Stockholm. This has contributed to collaborations between the teams attending the

hubs:

‐ Workshops inviting the teams to travel to the four different hubs, in order to exchange knowledge

and best practices between hub masters and teams as well as between the teams themselves.

‐ Calls every week between the four hub masters (Mr. Stefan Stengel in Hamburg, Mr. Ronald

Kleverlaan in Amsterdam, Ms. Lone Gammelgaard‐Schwarz in Copenhagen, Ms. Amelie Furborg in

Stockholm)

‐ Putting several teams together in the same place (the Hubs) encourages natural collaboration

between them.

‐ Collaboration and networking between all teams of the SpeedUP! Europe Program. Between M7

and M 16 we had four major events in Hamburg where all the teams from all hubs were required to

attend.:

1. The Kick‐Off Event on 22th February 2015, 340 attendees

2. First pitch: MVP on 30 April 2015, 158 attendees

3. Second pitch: Market ready on 31 July 2015, 123 attendees

4. Third pitch: Market fit on 30 October 2015, 98 attendees



The attendance of all teams to these events contributed to create collaboration

opportunities among them.

1. Conclusion

Within the SUE programme, the start‐ups and entrepreneurs had access to a wide range of

collaborative events. The final objective, on a global scale, was to maintain the collaboration

between teams as well as collaboration within the FI‐PPP framework. On a smaller scale, the goal

was to develop collaboration and team spirit amongst the supported teams as well as with A16

accelerators. On a local scale, the SpeedUP! Europe programme built a lasting, strong and reliable

community of start‐ups through the organisation of many events, workshops and camps. This

collaboration is still working after the program. Many teams worked together in the same coworking

places and office communities. Many SpeedUP! Europe Teams are setting up a SpeedUP! Europe

alumni‐Group.
