End the R-word movement is… A campaign to ask people to pledge to stop saying the R-

word

Helping to bring awareness to people

Learning to use appropriate words

Honestly, they are just people like you and I; so why do they have to have a particular title

A campaign to elimination of the derogatory use of the r-word from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities

End the R-word means…

Retard or retarded are synonyms for “dumb” or “stupid”. That implies that people with intellectual disabilities are less valued and looked upon as “stupid”

You need to be aware of the derogatory remarks you are making and the words you are using

Do NOT use the R-word to describe anyone

The R-word, "retard," is slang for the term mental retardation.

Language affects attitudes and attitudes affect actions. It is hurtful, offensive, and derogatory

The R-word is degrading to those with intellectual disabilities

To build awareness of the impact the R-word has

It has became a societal norm to use the word when speaking about others with disabilities
