1. Introduction

This 2nd workshop on Sprint & Speed approved by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)

was held in Montreal from December 9th to December 12th 2017 and organized by the International Support

Program to African and Caribbean Sport (PAISAC) in partnership with the Jamaican Olympic Association and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and in collaboration with the Québec Athletic Federation and McGill Athletics

Center.

In Fall 2016, the first edition of Sprint & Speed was held in Montreal for 4 days. A great participation of 27 coaches (including our 6 olympic solidarity scholarship coaches) attended the workshop. The extremely positive

evaluation of the workshop from all participants has resulted to the organisation of the 2nd edition in 2017. For

this second edition we took in consideration the first edition’s participants comments and suggestions that wished to have more practical sprint content and a theoretical content based essentially on performance planning.

The four (4) lecturers that presented our 1st workshop edition were invited back and were asked to focus their

presentation mainly on the requested topics, which means: practical sprint content and performance planning. We were therefore pleased to welcome again Mr Michael McIntosh and Mr Okeile Stewart from Jamaica and Mr

Mr Jérôme Favérial from Canada for this second edition. Mr Marc Élie Toussaint present in 2016 was for this 2nd

edition not available. (see Annexe B, p.8) The logistic of the workshop was taken over by PAISAC with support from the Québec Athletic Federation for the

promotion and the pleasure to held this 2nd edition in the amazing facilities from McGill Training Athletic Center. Getting the chance to have three (3) experienced sprint specialists, our wish was to be able to welcome all

interested Canadian coaches for a wide share of knowledge. In addition to the eight (8) Olympic Solidarity

scholarship coaches, nine (9) Canadian coaches attended the workshop for the 4 days.

3. Participants

The workshop was organised in the frame of our 30th training session (Fall 2017). All our National Olympic

Committees (NOC) partners were informed during the scholarship coaches registration period that our 30th training session will be headlined by a sprint specific workshop, encouraging them to select a track and field

coach. Among our eight (8) scholarship coaches, three (3) of them were athletics coaches, Chantel Legair from

St-Vincent & the Grenadines, Michelle Alleyne Pennie from Trinidade & Tobago and Delvin Cole from Liberia. The promotion for this workshop was also made to the canadian coaches (from Québec and Ontario), we were helped

for this by the Québec Athletic Federation and Athletics Canada that promoted the workshop on their webside.

In total 17 participants took part into this workshop: PAISAC’s six (8) scholarship coaches, nine (9) Quebec and

Ontario track & field coaches.

Three (3) long distance coaches from Kenya registered to attend this 2nd edition. Unfortunately the delay for the Canadian visa prevented them to join us. But we are looking forward to welcome them in 2018 for the 3rd edition

of Sprint & Speed.

4. Conduct of the workshop

The training began on Thursday, November 9th with the opening lecture: Basic Sports Drills Theory & Purpose and Learning to Sprint (Biomechanical Development - Body Positioning - Breathing - Relaxation), this workshop was highlighted by the presence of 15 athletes of the club The Spartiates (High School Athletes

from the Cégep du Vieux Montréal). Those 15 athletes got the chance to have a training led by our two

Jamaican sprints Specialists under the observation of the participant coaches. The Friday and Saturday morning November 10th and 11th presented: Training Fundamentals (inter-training using Methods) completed by Sprint session (Sprint Drills for speed- Starting Blacks and other training equipment) and Development of Strength theoretical & Practical. The Saturday morning started with Power and Speed techniques presented by Michael and Okeile with the

Spartiates Athletes group. We ended the day by a great presentation from our Canadian Sprint Expert on the topic Speed specific timing with electronic timing devices and the alternatives. The last day of this Workshop, Sunday November 12th, presented Drills (Baton Passing), Periodization Plan and Evaluation (Theory and Practical).

During those 3.5 days of intense workshop the participants were very engaged and willing to learn the

maximum from the large experience of the three (3) lecturers. The two coffee breaks each day were also an appreciated moment, were personal questions, added information could be asked, the lecturers were very

open and generous with the sharing of their experiences. The workshop ended with a brief closing ceremony during which PAISAC and all the participants expressed their gratitude to the lecturers and to the Jamaican

Olympic Association.

5. Workshop Evaluation (See Annexe – p.9)

The workshop was appreciated, in terms of level of appreciation. Please find the summary of it here:

Appreciation of the organisation - content: Appreciation Level : 15% a lot and 85% and extremely.

Appreciation of the lecturers: Appreciation Level : 5% a lot and 95% and extremely

Expectations reached: Expectation level reached: 10% average, 35% a lot and 55% and extremely This first workshop showed a 90% of appreciation between a lot and extremely which is extremely satisfying. In

view of the comments in the evaluation forms and in person, the lecturers were extremely appreciated and the

highlight of this edition was the participation of a group of athletes which gave the participant coaches the possibility to observe better, take notes and film, which is harder to do when they were themselves the actors of

the practical sessions too. Appreciations and comments that we will take in consideration for the next editions (see conclusion p.6). 6. Funding

The major part of the Seminar was funded by PAISAC, it included the travelling, hotel and salary of the lecturers, as well as the logistic expenses for the holding of the workshop (classroom and gym rental, copies etc). Part of

the workshop was funded by the registration fees from our 17 participants.

7. Conclusion and thanks

This second workshop Sprint & Speed held by Jamaican and Canadian Sprint Specialists was a success in the face

of the rich exchanges and enthusiasm of the seventeen (17) participants and fifteen (15) athletes present. The rich knowledge, large experience and generosity of the three (3) lecturers was highly appreciated by all.

Five (5) participants among the seventeen (17) present attended also the 1st edition in 2016. They really enjoyed

the highly practical content of this 2nd edition that gave them useful tools for their practice. The participation of the 15 athletes was an extraordinary experience for all. The young athletes at first place were very excited and

impressed to get the chance to get a training sessions with highly experimented Jamaican coaches. The workshop participant really appreciated this experience too that gave them the chance to observe, film and take

notes of the practice while the lecturers and the athletes were active on the track.

The continuity of this workshop will therefore be built in that direction: giving the chance to the participant

coaches to observe training sessions with groups of athletes. After discussion with the Jamaican lecturers there would be a possibility to offer continuity to this second edition by organising a training camp in Montreal during

the Summer 2018. This Summer camp would be held in the McGill Athletic Center and welcoming the lecturer M. McIntosh and M. Stewart for a 3rd Sprint & Speed Edition, young high school and university athletes would be

invited to take part to this one week training session.

We were also very pleased to get the chance to welcome coaches not only from Quebec but from Ontario too and

to have seen that the interest was showed all the way in Kenya. We hope that in the future the sharing of this rich knowledge will be spread on a larger scale.

This second edition 2017 of the Sprint & Speed workshop was again a rich and highly appreciated share of knowledge between Jamaican and Canadian coaches and athletes, we are extremely pleased about this precious

collaboration and are looking forward for a continued partnership with the Jamaican Olympic Association.
