No doubt I now grew verypale; but I talked more fluently, and

with a heightened voice. Yet the sound increased and what could Ido? It was a low, dull, quick sound much such a sound as a watchmakes when enveloped in cotton. I gasped for breathand yet theofficers heard it not. I talked more quickly more vehemently; but

the noise steadily increased. I arose and argued about trifles, in a highkey and with violent gesticulations; but the noise steadily increased. Why wouldthey not be gone? I paced the floor to and fro with heavystrides, as if excited to fury by the observations of the men but the

noise steadily increased. Oh God! what could I do? I foamedIravedI swore! I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting,

and grated it upon the boards, but the noise arose over all andcontinually increased. It grew louder louderlouder! And still

the men chatted pleasantly, and smiled. Was it possible they heardnot? Almighty God!no, no! They heard! they suspected!they knew!they were making a mockery of my horror! this Ithought, and this I think. But anything was better than this agony!Anything was more tolerable than this derision! READ THE FOLLOWING REPORT OF THEEXPERIMENT AND ANSWER THE

    QUESTIONS.

    What may happen?

You should find that after a few seconds the candle goes out. Then

the water level begins to rise

    Why does it happen?

When you burn a candle you are reacting oxygen from the air with

carbon and hydrogen in the candle. This will reduce the amount ofoxygen in the glass, but it will also increase the amount of carbon-dioxide in the glass.

    Candle Reaction

Overall 3 molecules of oxygen will produce two of water whichcondense and two of carbon-dioxide. So the volume of gas should

reduce by 1/3 of the oxygen burnt. Oxygen only makes up 20% of theair, and a candle will stop burning when the level of oxygen drops toabout 15%, so the gas should shrink by about 1/3 of 5% so about 1-2%. This is probably too small an effect for you to notice.

    19. -What do you think is the purpose of the experiment?
