PREFACE.Someyears have
now
elapsed since the completion of the Encyclopedia Heraldica,it
which contained, as the Author professedprincipalNesbitt,
should,
the
subject
matter of
all
the
works upon
Heraldry then
extant,
such
as
Edmondson, GiviMim, and
and the more ancient authors, who had written upon the Science generally, into
but condensed
a
more
concise
form,
and
blended
with
his
own
elaborate
collections in alphabetical arrangement, as
a book of ready reference, embracing the
whole Science
of
Heraldry,
and(in
matters
connected with
it
:
but,
although
this
extensive collection
contained,
the Dictionary of Arms, only with the Armorial
Bearings of the Peers and Baronets,) about sixty thousand Coats ofCrests
Arms
;
yet the
being generally omitted, at least very few of them, comparatively speaking,
having been given with the
Arms
in
Edmondson andafter the
Givillim,
the
Author
of
the
Encyclopedia Heraldica was induced,
completion of that Work, to collect
a great number of the Crests omitted,
as
well as
many
ancient
Bearings
from
Manuscript Collections
in the
Library of the British
Museum, and
also the
new Coats
which were yearly emanating from the College of Arms upon the acquisition of wealth, or the grant of new honours and dignities which, altogether, were sufficient to furnish;
materials for anfollowingto
additional volume, and
could not be otherwise than useful.
The
Addenda has
therefore been arranged in the
same manner,
in
every respect,
correspond with the preceding volumes of the Encyclopedia Heraldica, referring to
that
Work where
the information
is
additional,
and correcting such parts
of
it
as
may

have been erroneously given
;
and some thousandsin the
of ancient
and modern Arms havea hundred thouto the
been added to the former collection,
whole amounting
to nearly
sand Arms and Crests, with the Armorial Bearings of the Peers and Baronetspresent time.
