'....the
magical
things about
theatre,
you can be
transported..."
FROM THE
PRESIDENT~V~V7r"T"elconie to our third production or our 80 anniversary
\ X / season Once On This Island. I hope you enjoy this delightfulV V tale of romance between classes: the story ofTi Mounc and
the rich city boy shesaves from death. Please comeback in Mayforourfinal production Hello, Dolly! The Jerry Herman blockbusterof a taleabout the meddlesome, yet charming Dolly Gallagher Levi and awhirlwind day in New York at the turn of the 20th century.
Theatre can move and excite you in a way that no other medium can-because it not only carries you away-but because it is really happening, right in front of you, not on a screen. It seemsrealand yet it isn't ...andyet it is.
That's one ol the magical things about theatre: you can be transported, either by the scenery, the costumes, the lights, the music, the characters,or the feeling that the author and actors convey. I have fond memoriesof the first play I saw. 1was no more than six or seven years old. It wasa musical, of course! It was a summerstock performance of Oklahoma*.That show has a special memory for meand has always been oneof myfavorites. I thought, "Wow these cowboys aresinging and dancing righthere, in front ol me! In Albany!" Understand, I've never been toOklahoma or even come near that part of the USA. I've neversmelled
the"waving wheat" or ridden ina "surrey with thefringe on top". Buteach time I've seen theshowor been in the show (three different times to date) I am there!
Now tonight, here in Schenectady, New York, in the bleak mid-winter, we hope that with thelushcalypso sounds and tropical painted stage of Once On This Island, you will be transported towarmer climbs-perhaps the Caribbean, or the South Seas, or anywhere that's warm!. Close youreyes and imagine yourself on a warm, tropical beach, maybe with a cool refreshing beverage nearby! Ahhhhhh Enjoy, and thanks for coming!

"Through
music, song
and dance,
the musical
explores
universal issues
which affect
us all".
Rosa Guy's workjoined the
experiences of theWest Indian
immigrant withthose of the African
American.
FROM THE
DIRECTOROnce On This Island is a delightful musical fable. It is based on RosaGuy's novel, My Love, My Love, which in turn was inspired by HansChristian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. The show is deceptivelysimple, a groupof Caribbean Island peasants waitout the night of aterrible storm byperforming a fairy tale of star-crossed lovers, butinherent in this tale are the serious themes of class distinction and racial
prejudice which plague our own society. Through music, song anddance, the musical explores universal issues which affect us all - love, anger, forgiveness, faith, maturity and death.
The show is set on an unspecified island in the French Antilles on thenight of a violent tropical storm. In a small hut, a group of peasantshuddle together around a fire. A young childcries out in fear as thestorm rages, and the peasants try to sooth and divert her by acting outa story about the power of love. The tellingof the story spans thecourseof the night, as the peasant weave their tale in song and dance.By the end ol the night, the storm hassubsided, the peasants havesurvived and the little girl has learned the meaning of the story.
The powerol theater is that it can transform lives. My hope is thatthis production will move you and that you will be inspired to shareyour personal story with your family and friends. For just as we sing inthe final number, "out of what we live and we believe, our lives becomethe stories that we weave."
