Alan joined the Royal Liverpool PhilharmonicOrchestra in 1984, and will retire in April this year. Hisfinal concert with the Orchestra, conducted by VasilyPetrenko, will be on Thursday 10 April, and featuresMahler’s Adagio from Symphony No.10 and Das Liedvon der Erde.

Alan says he learned his chosen instrument “because theschool had one and I liked the colour of the case!”

It was attending Hallé concerts “most of which wereconducted by Sir John Barbirolli –these were legendaryperformances” that fired up Alan to pursue aprofessional music career. “I guess doing Metallurgydidn’t appeal and one year in the Turner and Newelllaboratory was enough.”

Gary Carpenter dedicated his Bassoon Concerto to Alan,Vasily Petrenko and the Orchestra, who gave the worldpremiere performance in November 2011.

From 17 March, Liverpool Philharmonicadministration staff will be located at Roscoe Court, 4 – 6 Rodney Street, Liverpool,L1 2TZ

On Alan’s performance of MichaelDaugherty’s Dead Elvis withEnsemble 10/10 in 2012, TheObserver’s Fiona Maddockcommented: “Dead Elvis featuresa bebopping solo bassoon as Elvis, who dallies with Las Vegas excess, but has moments of lyricism too.RLPO principal bassoon AlanPendlebury gave himself up to thepart, even dressing in white Elvissuit and wig and managing toplay on bended knee. I hope theypaid him appropriately.”

Alan will be greatly missed, though everyone in LiverpoolPhilharmonic and no doubt all ourconcert-goers wish him well in hisretirement. Here are some ofAlan’s reflections on adistinguished career.

What is your earliestmusical memory?Listening to a 78 of Policeman’sHoliday in about 1956

If you could play a differentinstrument, which onewould it be?The cors anglais – even taking theinstrument out of the case can tella story –it is that mostcharacterful of instruments.

What is your favourite RoyalLiverpool PhilharmonicOrchestra recording?Suk’s Summer’s Tale conductedby Libor Pešek KBE.

What has been your mostmemorable moment withthe Orchestra? While it is difficult to pin down afavourite performance, I thinkopening the Prague SpringFestival in the presence of thePrime Minister Vaclav Havel in1993 was quite something.

What would you most like todo if you weren’t a musician?I would like to be a successfulracing tipster –particularly on thejump courses –naturally theinformation would have to staywith me to protect the odds! Inretirement I’m looking forward tojust spending more time doingthings like bird watching andracing, crosswords. It will be anovelty not to have one’s entirelife ruled by a schedule.

What do you like most aboutLiverpool? There are many great things aboutworking in Liverpool –above allthough the spirit, humour andinterest of the people of the City.It is a City which knows how toparty – how to innovate – andhow to show compassion – not abad trio!

To Dr. B.A. Proctor who adoptsAlan Pendlebury and to all thosedonors who have adoptedmusicians in the Royal LiverpoolPhilharmonic Orchestra throughLiverpool Philharmonic’s Adopt aPlayer scheme. Adopting one ofthe following musicians will giveus a ‘full house’: James Clark andThelma Handy (joint leaders),David Ruby (viola), Mark Lindley(cello), Simon Chappell (tbasstrombone), Josephine Frieze(percussion). If you would like tofind out more about how you canadopt a player in the RoyalLiverpool PhilharmonicOrchestra, gain a wonderfulinsight into the life of LiverpoolPhilharmonic, with opportunitiesto meet your adopted musicianand others in the Orchestra, contact the fundraising team on0151 210 2921 or [email protected].

A LITTLE BITOF HISTORYThe Heritage Lottery Fund has made anaward to Liverpool Philharmonic tosupport plans to stage an exhibition andaccompanying events, based on ourarchive, that celebrate the organisation’shistory during our 175th anniversary in2015.

Liverpool Philharmonic’s extensive archive is heldat Liverpool Records Office in the splendidlyrefurbished Liverpool Central Library and we willbe working with colleagues at Central Library onthis project.

The exhibition is planned to run from January 2015to August 2015 in Liverpool Central Library. Afterthis, a significant portion of it will move toLiverpool Philharmonic Hall where it will behoused permanently.

Everyone at Liverpool Philharmonic is grateful to ourfriend, concert-goer and supporter, Miss Mary Riddochwho has voluntarily and lovingly tended the terracegarden in the Rodewald Suite, including planting avariety of seasonal plants and flowers since 1996. Mary’sgreen-fingers are much admired by us all at LiverpoolPhilharmonic and visitors alike. The Hall reburbishmentprogramme will ensure that parts of the open spaces inthe complex are planned to be environmentally friendlyand encourage birds and insects.
