Constantine Maroulis, the star of Rock Of Ages, will be the second former “American Idol”

contestant to pass through Atlanta in a month (his season-four castmate Anthony Fedorov starred in June’s Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat). But what some “Idol” fans may not know is that Maroulis was a musical theater fanatic long before the TV show made him a household name.

Born in 1975 to Greek-American parents, Maroulis grew up in New Jersey, and went to college at the prestigious Boston Conservatory, where he got his BFA in Musical Theatre.

“Although ‘American Idol’ was an amazing experience, I did exist before my time on the show,” he laughs. “In 1998 I was granted admittance to the Boston Conservatory, where I studied script and score, private voice lessons, piano, dance,

stagecraft [and] Shakespeare. It was a great time in my life.”

Maroulis describes himself as a huge “theater geek,” but music always was a big part of his life. His parents exposed him to classic crooners like Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. His brother turned him on to rock ’n’ roll icons like The Doors and Led Zeppelin. His sister loved New Wave acts such as The Cure and Echo & the Bunnymen. While he was immersing himself in theater, Maroulis also was singing in bands, balancing dreams of being a rock star and a Broadway hoofer in equal measure. He got to do both with his big break as an actor, playing Roger in the national touring production of Rent.

Maroulis had just returned from a year on the road when his then-girlfriend talked him into auditioning for “Idol.” Maroulis was one of the first

contestants to benefit from the show’s recent change to its age range cut-off (from 16-24 to 16-28) and, along with Bo Bice, he was one of the first to bring a rock edge to a show typically steeped in pop, R&B and country. Maroulis made it to the Top 6 before being eliminated, but the exposure provided by the show and subsequent sold out tour inevitably changed his career for the better.

“‘Idol’ is a great ‘boot camp’ for performers,” he insists. “What better training is there than getting thrown out in front of over 30 million people live on TV? After ‘Idol’ I had tons of projects pitched to me [including singing with legendary rock band Queen]. I knew I wanted to do Broadway, and my featured supporting role in The Wedding Singer was a great way to get introduced to the scene again.”

While The Wedding Singer may have introduced Maroulis to Broadway, it was his leading role as Drew in Rock Of Ages that made him a star. The 35-year-old performer admits he has a lot in common

with the character, from their passion for music and heart-on-their-sleeve approach to relationships to their relentless pursuit of their dreams. For Maroulis, who earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance, getting to sing the music of Journey and Bon Jovi in a Broadway show is a lifelong dream come true.

“There might not ever be a part that fits me so well ever again in my career,” he admits. “I grew up singing in bands and doing theatre. I put on mini-Bon Jovi concerts in my room as a kid. Now I get to do it every night in front of a couple thousand people. Rock Of Ages has been a true blessing.”

Rock of Ages rolls into the Fox Theatre July 5-10. He freelances for many national and international publications, and performs on numerous improv teams with Jackpie at Relapse Theatre.

Imagine how magical it would be if you could relive the experience that helped you discover what you wanted to do with your life. Tom Alan Robbins,

who stars as Tevya in the Theater of the Stars production of Fiddler on the Roof, is doing just that.

Robbins first played Tevye in a 1971 Canton, Ohio, high school production, and it inspired him to become a professional actor. Since then, he has played a variety of characters, ranging from Pumbaa in the Broadway production of The Lion King to Thenarier in the First National Tour of Les Misèrables. But this is the

first time in 40 years that he’s been able to step back into Tevye’s shoes.

“I’ve been waiting for this to come around again,” says Robbins. “This is one of the

Welcome to the second show of our 2011 season, Rock of Ages. This show takes us back to 1987, where a small town girl meets a big city rocker, and they fall in love to some of the greatest rock songs of the 1980s. We are sure that you will enjoy this arena-rock love story that’s told through the mind-blowing hits of Journey, Night Ranger, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Asia and Whitesnake, to name a few. Sit back, relax and let down your hair for this fun tribute to the ’80s and all of its glory.

We are proud to welcome “American Idol” contestant and Broadway star, Constantine Maroulis, to our stage. He is reprising his acclaimed performance as Drew in the first national tour of this five-time Tony Award-nominated smash-hit musical, Rock of Ages.

As always, I’d like to thank you for being an integral part of our not-for-profit theater company. We are looking forward to the rest of our season. Up next is our second produced show, the classic favorite about Anatevka, Fiddler On The Roof (July 19-24), followed by the show that brings together the legendary music of Frank Sinatra and the creative vision of Tony Award-winner Twyla Tharp, Come Fly Away (Aug. 2-7). We continue the season with the unforgettable oddball romantic comedy, Guys and Dolls (Aug. 16-21), and conclude with the popular favorite, Annie (Jan. 14-22, 2012), which we plan to cast with a majority of local actors. It’s an exciting lineup and we hope to see you there!

Elicia is reprising the role of Sherrie, which she originated in the Toronto production of Rock of Ages which, earned rave reviews and the Audience Choice Award. Previously Elicia starred as Maria in the Andrew lloyd Webber, David Mirvish and David Ian North American premiere of The Sound of Music, for which she won the Dora Award for Best Actress in a principal role. Elicia was chosen for the role of Maria from thousands of young women through the TV series “How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria?” Elicia hails from Surrey BC, Canada. JANET BILLIG RICH (Producer) is a music industry veteran whose work has included being an artist manager, record company executive and music supervisor. HILLARY WEAVER (Producer) has been with Rock of Ages since its inception. RYAN KAVANAUGH (Producer) is the founder and CEO of Relativity Media, which has produced or financed more than 200 motion pictures, generating more than $14 billion in worldwide box office revenue and earning 43 Oscar nominations. He recently reached the first of its kind distribution deal with Netflix and acquired the marketing and distribution operations of Overture Films. Kavanaugh’s industry honors include 2009 Hollywood Awards Producer of the Year and “Billion Dollar Producer” recognition from Variety.

TONI HABIB (Producer) has produced the Rock of Ages musical and Sympathy For Delicious motion picture. Her film acting credits include Sympathy For Delicious and Nick And Tristan Mega Dega. Toni is a proud mom to Jake and Jared Habib.

HAPPY WALTERS (Producer), a veteran of the music business, created one of the most successful independent rock labels of the 1990s, Immortal Records, working with artists such as Korn, Incubus, Cypress Hill, Wu-Tang Clan, Fleetwood Mac, Rage Against the Machine and Velvet Revolver. Walters has produced more than a dozen feature films and supervised music for more than 50 films, including: There’s Something About Mary, Dear John, American Pie, Nutty Professor, The Fast and the Furious, Oh Brother Where Art Thou, The Big Lebowski and The Fighter.

AMAR’E STOUDEMIRE (Producer) is a five-time NBA All-Star and Captain of the New York Knicks. In 2002, Stoudemire was the first player to leave high school and win the NBA Rookie of the Year. Stoudemire is actively involved in television and film production, as well as giving back to his community. The Amar’e Stoudemire Each 1 Teach 1 Foundation creatively inspires children to eliminate poverty through education.

ISRAEL WOLFSON (Producer) is founder of Prolific, a bicoastal management/production company. He is a member of the Wolfson Group, a family office that makes institutional investments in hedge funds.

LAURA SMITH (Producer), along with her husband Michael Smith, is very excited to be a part of the Rock of Ages family. This is their first Broadway musical production and they have enjoyed sharing this amazing experience with their five beautiful daughters.

SARA JANE MERCER (Producer). Broadway credits include Rock of Ages and [title of show]. Regional credits include Dangerous Beauty at the Pasadena Playhouse. Off-Broadway, she produced Things To Ruin: The Songs of Joe Iconis (Zipper Factory, Second Stage) and Rewrite (Urban Stages). Sara is the chairman of lincoln Center Theatre’s Young Angels and a trustee at the Tony Award-winning Eugene O’Neill Theater Center.

DAVID KAUFMAN (Producer), is currently president of TOUR GCX Partners, Inc., the only country club golf access card. He is also a partner in Avion Tequila. Prior to that he was a founder of Cosi Sandwich Bar. He resides in New York City with his wife, the comic/writer lisa Perlman, and their son, Joshua. Rock on!

JAY FRANKS (Producer). After 20 years in the telecommunications industry, Jay has joined the Corner Store team to pursue his passion for the entertainment business. Jay is currently raising capital for the Corner Store Fund and is very excited to produce his first Broadway musical. CHRISTOPHER B. MANOS Producer

Mr. Manos has been in At lanta for more than 40 years. He has produced over 700 works of theater, ballet and opera. He has been recognized with nu mer ous civic awards, including the Atlanta Critics Award for the de vel op ment of the art of the ater in Atlanta

and the Gov er nor’s Award in the Arts. He has been instrumental in the creation of such organizations as the Winter Play Season, Grand Opera in the Park, Just Us The ater Company and the Fall Film Fes ti val – just to name a few! During the early months of the Woodruff Arts Center, Mr. Manos was responsible for 12 pro duc tions of theater, ballet and opera in that facility.

Mr. Manos received the Coca-Cola lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from the Arts & Business Council of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. In 2005, Mr. Manos was the first recipient of the GAElA Award, presented by the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts. In 2007, Mr. Manos was awarded the lifetime Achievement Award by the Broadway league.

Mr. Manos was married for 45 years to the late Glenn Ryman Manos. He has two sons, Chris Jr. and Nick, a daughter, Ann, and is the very proud grandfather of seven grandsons and four granddaughters.

NICHOlAS F. MANOS President

Mr. Manos is a graduate of the Westminster Schools in Atlanta and the University of North Carolina, where he was a Morehead Scholar. His career spans three decades in leadership positions. In the fall of 2000, he returned to Atlanta to become the managing director of Theater of the Stars. In 2008, he assumed the role of president.

Mr. Manos has been heavily involved with the touring aspect of the company and has been the driving force behind many of the artistic and cultural marvels brought to the Theater of the Stars stage, including the world professional premiere of Disney's High School Musical, the co-productions of Deaf West’s Big River, The King And I with Sandy Duncan, Bombay Dreams and the newly re-imagined version of Les Misérables.

Mr. Manos is the founder of the Junior Theatre Festival, an event that takes place every January in Atlanta, and brings students from all over the world together to perform, learn and celebrate theater.

Mr. Manos and his wife laura have been blessed with three children — Andy, Kate and Sam — and one crazy dog, Peach.

Fox Ambassadors are located at the Guest relations table in the main lobby at the Fox theatre merchandise Kiosk to offer their assistance, theatre information, and several rental items to enhance your performance enjoyment. An audio clarification device (Phonic Ear) is available for patrons with hearing disabilities. It is available, free of charge, on a first-come, first-serve basis on the evening of a performance, or you may reserve a device by calling the Patron Services Director. A limited number of booster seats are also available free of charge. Binoculars are available for sale. All items require a form of identification to be held until the item is returned.

ElevatorsElevators are located at the north end of each lobby. the elevators are available during all performances and make it possible to access each lobby without the use of stairs.

ParkingParking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Box office or by calling tIcKEtmAStEr at 800.745.3000. the Fox theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned parking lots operating in the Fox theatre district.

Performance NotesAll patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the theatre. Please be aware that not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance.

etiqUette1. Arrive early. If you are late, you may be held out or reseated until an appropriate time for you to get to your assigned seat. People who arrive late disturb the performers on stage and audience members. It is best to arrive about 30 minutes early so that you have time to purchase concessions, find your seat, and read the program before the show starts. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) because you should not leave your seat until the intermission or until the performance ends.3. Please sit in the seat you are assigned so you do not cause confusion for other audience members.4. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. You’ll be embarrassed if it goes off in the middle of a tense moment of the show and it will break the mood for everyone. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting.5. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers.6. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point.7. The sound system for each show is provided by the touring production. Unfortunately, many variables exist that may occasionally hinder sound quality. Please let an usher know if you are having trouble hearing. Adjustments may be able to be made or an assisted listening device can be provided. 8. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 8. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 9. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 10. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 11. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you.12. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.13. Just be courteous and everyone will enjoy the show.

By the 1970s, the sheer size of the auditorium made it impossible to hold first-run films for the long time periods now required by distributors.

In 1974, Southern Bell approached Mosque, Inc., who had owned the theatre since 1935, to buy and raze the theatre for its new headquarters.

July 10, 1974: Possibly the first official Save the Fox meeting was held at Herren’s restaurant. Among those in attendance was future Mayor Maynard Jackson.

December 31, 1974: To generate Save the Fox donations, Alex Cooley presented The Gregg Allman Tour. More than 4,000 people attended.

December 1975: A 25 cent ticket surcharge is added to go toward saving the Fox.

March 20, 1976: The Delta Zeta sorority hosted an “Evening at the Fox” and raised $70,000.

May 26, 1976: The Fox was made a National Historic Landmark by the

U.S. Department of the Interior.

By February 1978, the Fox’s mortgage was paid off, six months ahead of schedule, thanks to the contributions of over 7,000 generous citizens.

on may 17, 1974, the Fox was put on the national register of Historic Places. Buildings less than 50 years old are not meant to qualify, but because of the Fox’s “outstanding architectural merit,” it made the list. Here are some other fun facts:

With memorable songs such as “If I Were A Rich Man,” the exuberant “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and triumphant “Tradition,” audiences can’t help but tap their feet to Fiddler on the Roof’s tale of love and laughter, devotion and defiance, and changing traditions.

A humble milkman from the Russian village of Anatevka, Tevye acts as the show’s narrator, engaging the audience with a story about daily Jewish country life in czarist Russia. The exuberance

with which his family and friends meet life’s little and extreme challenges is thought-provoking, touching and at times hilarious, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats throughout.

“It’s a demanding role,” says Robbins. “Tevya never leaves the stage. This show is jam-packed.”

Fiddler finds Tevya wrestling with the new ideas presented by a younger generation. When his daughters choose suitors who defy his idea of a proper match, Tevye comes to realize, through a series of incidents that are at once comic and bittersweet, that his children

need to be free to establish traditions of their own.

The show also stars Susan Cella, who returns to the role of Golde after appearing opposite Theodore Bikel and Harvey Fierstein in the Broadway production. Cella and Robbins create one of the most poignant moments in the show as their characters struggle with the question, “Do You Love Me?” as the world around them rapidly changes.

Since 1953, Theater of the Stars (TOTS) has produced or presented more than 700 productions in Atlanta, across the country, and around the world. Its stated mission is to produce and present the best of Broadway musicals. But TOTS Producer Christopher B. Manos and President Nicholas F.

Manos have another mission they fulfill whenever possible: to introduce the love of musical theater to new generations of Atlantans. The cast of this Fiddler includes professional actors performing alongside 16 talented local children — one of whom may grow up and play Tevye or Golde someday.

Fiddler on the Roof will celebrate life at the Fox Theatre from July 19 through July 24. Jeff Al-Mashat is a writer, speaker and fundraiser who has worked in Atlanta’s nonprofit community for the past 17 years.

the unicef experienceEvery day, 22,000 children die of preventable causes. Things that we take

for granted — clean water, abundant food, shelter, vaccines, schools — are a luxury for many kids in developing nations. To prove this point and teach Atlantans how they can help, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF set up an exhibit called The UNICEF Experience in the luxury wing of Lenox Square mall. The weeklong interactive display kicked off with a party on May 22. Over 200 members of the Atlanta community learned first-hand what children in developing countries face, got an insider view of UNICEF’s lifesaving work, and had the opportunity to make a difference — all without leaving Atlanta. Encore Atlanta was there to provide volunteers and support this worthy cause.
