ENCAPSULADOS(NRT/CTG) El 18 de septiembre de 2007se inauguró, en las cápsulas 610 y 612 del hotelSiesta de Tokio, Encapsulados, una exposicióncolectiva de 11 artistas contemporáneos espa-ñoles. La exposición es obvia heredera de la

boîte-en-valise de Duchamp, del museo demicro-miniaturas de Guadalest, de los microgra-mas de Walser y de la conspiración shandy narra-da por Vila-Matas, en la que uno de los requisitosimprescindibles para formar parte de la men-cionada conspiración era que la obra artística deuno pudiese caber en un maletín.

En este caso, todas las obras de la exposi-ción, integrada por 21 pinturas, dibujos y foto-grafías, pudieron ser transportadas hasta lascorrespondientes cápsulas en un par de bolsasde aseo. No existe país más apropiado queJapón, donde se venera lo diminuto -la grulla depapel, el océano en un jardín de grava, el tama-gochi y el salto de la rana en el estanque-, parallevar a cabo esta exposición que homenajea elpequeño formato frente al gigantismo de buenaparte del arte contemporáneo actual. Y en Tokiono se podría encontrar un lugar más ajustado alpropósito de la exposición que un par de habita-ciones-cápsula (1 x 0,7 x 2 metros) de un hotellocalizado junto a la línea Yamanote.

ENCAPSULATED(NRT / CTG) On the 18th of September2007, a Collective Exhibit by 11 ContemporarySpanish Artists was inaugurated in Capsules610 and 612 of the Siesta Hotel in Tokyo. Theexhibit is an evident heir of the boîte-en-valise byDuchamp, the Mini-Miniature Museum ofGuadalest, the micrograms by Walser and theshandy conspiracy narrated by Vila-Matas, inwhich one of the essential re q u i rements to forma part of this aforementioned conspiracy was thatthe artistic work had to fit inside a briefcase.

Tokio fue la primera parada de Encapsula-dos, exposición que ahora se presenta en LANAVAL de Cartagena, posiblemente la galeríamás pequeña del mundo: un escaparate calleje-ro de 50 x 100 x 50 cm. En comparación coneste reducido espacio la cápsula tokiota adquie-re proporciones versallescas. Los mismos artis-tas que formaron parte de aquella primera expo-sición presentan ahora nuevos micro-trabajos,componiendo una colección que cabe perfecta-mente en una mesita de noche.

A través de la estrategia portátil, en éste yotros casos similares, el arte español se jibarizay cambia de escala. Obviando las dificultadespresupuestarias y burocráticas que el transportede obra artística suele conllevar, Encapsuladosse embarca sin dificultad en vuelos interconti-nentales y se muestra en lugares alternativos anuestras salas de exposiciones y museos. Laencapsulización nace como una estrategia autó-noma que señala la escasa presencia a nivelinternacional del arte español pese a las plata-

By means of this portable strategy in thisand similar cases, Spanish art is miniaturizedand changes its scale. Thus bypassing the bud-getary and bureaucratic difficulties which thetransport of artistic works usually involves, theEncapsulated exhibit can be easily boarded onintercontinental flights and may be displayed inalternative locations instead of our exhibit roomsand museums. The encapsulation has beenfounded as an autonomous strategy which indi-cates the minimal presence of Spanish Art at theinternational level although there are platforms tolaunch them: International ARCO art fair,Biennals, etc. Encapsulated has now stoppedover in Cartagena but soon it will return to itssmall brief case to an unknown destination. In this case, all the works in the exhibit com-prised by 21 paintings, drawings, and photo-graphs, could be transported until the corres-ponding capsules in a pair of toiletry bags. Thereis no country more appropriate than Japan,where smallness is venerated - the bird made ofpaper, the ocean in a gravel garden, the ta-magochi, and the jump of a frog into a pond, tohost this exhibit which pays homage to the smallformat as opposed to the gigantism which rep-resents the majority of today’s contemporary art.And in Tokyo, it is not possible to find a placewhich is better adapted to the purpose of thisexposition than a couple of capsule-rooms (1 x0.7 x 2 metres) in a hotel located next to theYamanote line.

Tokyo was the first stop of Encapsulated.This exhibit will soon travel to La Naval inCartagena, possibly the world’s smallest artgallery: a (50 x 100 x 50 cm) shop window in thestreet in comparison with this limited space, theTokyo capsule acquires Versaille proportions.

La tournée de Encapsulados hace una nuevaparada. Esta propuesta colectiva sigue lasenseñanzas de la maleta duchampiana. Unacolección móvil.

El hotel cápsula en Tokio, un escaparatenaviero en Cartagena, una chaqueta de estra-perlista en postguerra, girando en el hipnóticocorbatero imaginado en Lisboa, apostada en losescalones de una escalera hacia el cielo.

La propuesta de una colección asequible yllevadera que custodie la habitación de hotel, acaballo entre Lynch y los Cohen. Un macro dePlaytime, donde reinaba también el silencio,donde la intimidad era vulnerada tras el cristal porun Tati nocturno.

The proposal of an affordable and portablecollection which is housed in a hotel room,halfway between Lynch and the Cohen Brothers.A Playtime macro, where silence also reigns,where the intimacy has been violated behind theglass by a nocturnal Tati.

Travelling with the personal collection andcustom-decorating the temporary bedroom.Barton Fink would have felt at home.

Eleven artists in a road-exhibition which con-tinues to grow in each new stop. Brief secretexhibits which are only discovered by accident:

ENCAPSULATED INLA NAVAL GALLERY Embedded inthe shop window, the musicians are isolated andperform in the transparency of glass. They createtheir works from the interior. The speakers, veryCocteau, amplify the Parisian bride and groom.

The Encapsulated tournée has made a newstop. This collective proposal follows the philosophy

En unos tiempos en los que la especta-cularización y el gigantismo se ha apropiado delmundo del arte, un exposición dedicada al forma-to más mínimo parece un atrevimiento, casi unainsolencia, además de toda una declaración deintenciones. El tamaño siempre ha importado peroasistimos a una utilización de lo grande porque sí,sustentada en parte por los nuevos medios dereproducción digital y la megalomanía a la queparecen abonarse ciertas instituciones públicas.

Pero hay vida más acá de las superpro-ducciones, la hipertrofia y lo expanded. Lopequeño puede encerrar –y eso lo sabemos bienen La Naval– toda la intensidad y emoción quebuscamos en una obra de arte.

En el museo de la ciudad de Nueva York sepuede ver la casa de muñecas hecha a lo largo deveinte años por las hermanas Stettheimer, para laque crearon obras artistas como Gaston Lachai-se, Albert Gleizes y hasta Marcel Duchamp, quepintó una réplica de su Desnudo bajando unaescalera a escala. Y en el Museo de Miniatura
